Oxygen conditions in ice-covered lakes depend on many factors, which, in turn, are influenced by a changing climate, so detection of the oxygen trend becomes difficult. Our research was based on data of long-term measurements of dissolved oxygen (2007–2020), water temperature, under-ice solar radiation, and snow-ice thickness (1995–2020) in Lake Vendyurskoe (Northwestern Russia). Changes of air temperature and precipitation in the study region during 1994–2020 and ice phenology of Lake Vendyurskoe for the same period based on field data and FLake model calculations were analyzed. The interannual variability of ice-on and ice-off dates covered wide time intervals (5 and 3 weeks, respectively), but no significant trends were revealed. In years with early ice-on, oxygen content decreased by more than 50% by the end of winter. In years with late ice-on and intermediate ice-off, the oxygen decrease was less than 40%. A significant negative trend was revealed for snow-ice cover thickness in spring. A climatic decrease of snow-ice cover thickness contributes to the rise of under-ice irradiance and earlier onset of under-ice convection. In years with early and long convection, an increase in oxygen content by 10–15% was observed at the end of the ice-covered period, presumably due to photosynthesis of phytoplankton.

AbstractThe paper presents assessment results of the ice dynamics on Lake Raduńskie Górne (Upper Radunia Lake) based on long-term observations of the course of ice phenomena. Interannual changes in lake ice phenology parameters (freeze-onset, ice-on, freeze duration, melt-onset, permanent ice cover duration, ice-off, melt duration) in the years 1961–2010 are discussed. In addition, the ice cover thickness was taken into consideration. The analysed parameters of ice phenology were compared to each other as well as to the mean air and water temperatures of the winter half-year (November–April). The main periods of the ice regime of the lake have been determined and described. The permanent ice cover constitutes on average 79%, freeze-up period 13%, and break-up period 8% of the whole time of ice phenomena. It was shown that the weather parameters crucial for ice formation are the mean air and surface water temperatures. On Lake Raduńskie Górne the ice phenomena can only occur when mean air temperature in the winter half-year, at Borucino wheather station, is lower than 4.9°C, and water temperature (at a depth of 0.4 m) is lower than 5.7°C. In turn permanent ice cover is created when the mean air temperature of the winter half-year is lower than 3.9°C. The maximum and mean ice cover thickness on Lake Raduńskie Górne ranged, respectively, from 0.5 to 50 cm, and from 0.5 to 38.3 cm. These parameters were strongly positively correlated (r = 0.87–0.88, p <0.05) with the duration of the ice cover period.

Recent changes of the main oceanographic, chemical, and biological parameters of the Okhotsk Sea ecosystem are considered briefly for the last decades (2000–2010s), mostly on the data obtained in marine expeditions conducted by Pacific Fish. Res. Center (TINRO) annually. Since the mid-2000s, anomalous oceanographic conditions were formed there with prevailing heightened temperature in all layers of the sea and lowered ice cover caused by changes in the atmosphere circulation with northward shift of cyclones tracks in winter and weakening of winter monsoon. The ice cover was below the normal value every year since 2004. In the warmer winter conditions, producing of the high-density water on the northern shelf decreased from 3.2–7.8 . 103 km3 in 1998–2002 to 1.2 . 103 km3 on average in 2004–2015, and the water with density sq > 26.8 was not formed at all in 2007–2009, 2011, and 2014–2015. As the result, winter convection, including the slope convection, became weaker and shallower and ventilated worse the water column, so dissolved oxygen content decreased in the lower portion of the intermediate layer, usually ventilated by slope convection. For the core of the intermediate layer (isopycnal surface 27.0 σθ), positive trend of temperature is estimated as +0.04…+0.16 o/decade, by areas, while the trend of dissolved oxygen content is negative: –0.07…–0.14 mL/L.decade, by areas. From the other hand, spring phytoplankton bloom became less intensive, presumably because of poorer upward flux of nutrients in conditions of weaker vertical mixing, and zooplankton biomass decreased, particularly for phytophages. However, these changes did not cause significant response in fluctuations of stocks for the main commercial fish and crab species. The largest stock of walleye pollock had cyclic fluctuations driven mostly by intra-population regulations, the stocks of pacific herring were rather stable, and the stocks of deep-water fish species, as flounders and halibuts had a slight tendency to growth, possibly because of better conditions for reproduction. Indeed, the densest aggregations of greenland halibut shifted from the depth of 600–700 m to 500–600 m that may be caused by de-oxygenizing of the lower portion of the intermediate layer. Crabs abundance also had positive dynamics obviously because of the effect of protective measures for red king crab in the 2009–2012, though its biomass continued to grow even after restoring the commercial landings. There is concluded that recent changes in the macroecosystem of the Okhotsk Sea correspond to the conception of the sub-polar ecosystems transformation under climate warming toward decreasing of their productivity and increasing of their functioning efficiency that was proposed earlier for the Japan Sea. Thus, from position of commercial exploitation of marine biological resources, the modern reconstruction of the Okhotsk Sea ecosystem under the climate change impact could be considered as a positive process.

Abstract This paper presents an analysis of thermal and oxygen conditions of the Charzykowskie Lake in the years 2014-2016 in the period from May to August. The measurements were carried out once a month, at points representing three different basins in the lake, and the temperatures and oxygen content dissolved in the water were recorded every 1m from the surface to the bottom at the deepest point of each basin. The changes in temperatures and content of dissolved oxygen were analysed in each of the representative measurement points for particular parts of the lake. It has been shown that the deficit of oxygen dissolved in the bottom layers of the water starts occurring by the beginning of the summer stagnation period, whereas at its peak (August) the anaerobic zone includes hypolimnion and part of the metalimnion. The hypothesis that the thickness of the thermal layers varies within the lake basin was confirmed. It was also shown that the oxygen content curve at representative points, in all years of research, evolves to the form of a clinograde at the peak of summer stagnation, where the concentration of dissolved oxygen decreases with the depth.

AbstractKnowledge about the long-term response of High Mountain Asian glaciers to climatic variations is paramount because of their important role in sustaining Asian river flow. Here, a satellite-based time series of glacier mass balance for seven climatically different regions across High Mountain Asia since the 1960s shows that glacier mass loss rates have persistently increased at most sites. Regional glacier mass budgets ranged from −0.40 ± 0.07 m w.e.a−1 in Central and Northern Tien Shan to −0.06 ± 0.07 m w.e.a−1 in Eastern Pamir, with considerable temporal and spatial variability. Highest rates of mass loss occurred in Central Himalaya and Northern Tien Shan after 2015 and even in regions where glaciers were previously in balance with climate, such as Eastern Pamir, mass losses prevailed in recent years. An increase in summer temperature explains the long-term trend in mass loss and now appears to drive mass loss even in regions formerly sensitive to both temperature and precipitation.

Abstract Background The success of debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) in early periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) largely depends on the presence of a mature biofilm. At what time point DAIR should be disrecommended is unknown. This multicenter study evaluated the outcome of DAIR in relation to the time after index arthroplasty. Methods We retrospectively evaluated PJIs occurring within 90 days after surgery and treated with DAIR. Patients with bacteremia, arthroscopic debridements, and a follow-up &lt;1 year were excluded. Treatment failure was defined as (1) any further surgical procedure related to infection; (2) PJI-related death; or (3) use of long-term suppressive antibiotics. Results We included 769 patients. Treatment failure occurred in 294 patients (38%) and was similar between time intervals from index arthroplasty to DAIR: the failure rate for Week 1–2 was 42% (95/226), the rate for Week 3–4 was 38% (143/378), the rate for Week 5–6 was 29% (29/100), and the rate for Week 7–12 was 42% (27/65). An exchange of modular components was performed to a lesser extent in the early post-surgical course compared with the late course (41% vs 63%, respectively; P &lt; .001). The causative microorganisms, comorbidities, and durations of symptoms were comparable between time intervals. Conclusions DAIR is a viable option in patients with early PJI presenting more than 4 weeks after index surgery, as long as DAIR is performed within at least 1 week after the onset of symptoms and modular components can be exchanged.
