The issues of development of traction drives of locomotives are considered. It was found that with the existing limitations of the traction force and the speed of continuous operation, asynchronous traction motors do not have clear advantages over collector motors. The possibility of creating collector motors for electric locomotives with a power equal to the used asynchronous ones has been proved, new technical solutions have been proposed for units that ensure the reliability of the latter when using high-torque motors (elastic gearwheel with chevron teeth, two-layer rubber-metal hinge, rubber-cord clutch options), as an optimal solution for the drive with collector motors, it is proposed to use a drive with a support frame motor and an axial gearbox. The directions of research necessary for the practical implementation of drives with a high-torque traction motor are determined, it is proposed to conduct research on the feasibility of creating diesel locomotives with bogies, unified with electric locomotives. The proposed solutions received two patents for inventions, eight patents for utility models, two patent applications were filed.

The paper considers a problem of creation of new traction drives with brushless electric traction motors (ETM) for passenger locomotives. Analysis of drive designs revealed that the increase of power of induction motors through the increase of rotation frequency leads to the contradiction between requirements for the design reliability, on the one hand, and requirements for technological simplicity, on the other hand. In order to solve the contradiction it is necessary to use ETM designs that have enhanced torque and minimal dimensions in axial direction. It is established that ETM with disk rotor (axial magnetic flux) satisfy such requirements. The authors proposed an aggregate scheme of support-frame traction drives that include ETM with disk rotor, which allows significantly increasing the adaptability to manufacture and repairability of drive at preservation of reliability. As a result, the authors made a conclusion about the reasonability of conducting research and development work on creation of locomotive ETM with axial magnetic flux. The authors have submitted an application for a patent on the proposed design of traction drive.

The task of creating a method for constructing components and parts of a locomotive drive, allowing not only to simulate the physical properties of the latter but also to form and automate the recognition of technical solutions, is considered. A model of a traction drive, which is a system of sets of descriptions of real objects of the set which makes it possible to create mathematical models of the structure in the form of a set of related elements included in the libraries of well-known solutions, is proposed. In contrast to previously known methods based on the procedure of creating new solutions under which a prototype of the structure is made and then improved on the basis of an empirical analysis of its development (while the design task is to create new structures). In the proposed method the basis for the construction of the technical system objective model is the classification of technical systems. Solutions to eleminate jamming of the sleeves of the axes with the transverse movement of the engine are proposed. A patent for the invention and two patents for the utility models are obtained.

The paper considers a task on a search for new methods aimed at development of patentability-based technical solutions of mounting electric traction motors to bogie frame by creating classifications. In result of the analysis, the authors propose a classification that allows systematizing designs of suspensions of all existing traction drives and axial gearboxes and allows determining possible search areas of new technical solutions. On the basis of the classification the authors have proposed designs of mounting electric traction motors to bogie frame, particularly, in conditions of limited vertical dimensions, suspensions of axial gearbox that provide the alignment of electric traction motor and the axial gearbox, and also new designs of connecting links.

The work objective is to increase the traction properties of locomotives without the use of traction drives with asynchronous traction motors and pulse width modulation. Research methods: methods of physical and field experiments, analytical methods for calculating the dynamics of the rolling stock. Conclusion: based on the conducted research, it is proposed to perform a promising diesel locomotive in the form of two sections on three two-axle bogies and a booster on two two-axle bogies, as well as to carry out experimental design work to develop an arc-type stator asynchronous motor and traction drives of a diesel locomotive using it.

Abstract In the simulation model presented in this paper, the kinematic characteristics of traction drives are formulated using classical Hertzian contact theory and elasto-hydrodynamic theory. The roller swing motion is governed by an equation derived based on Newton’s Second Law and is coupled to the side slip, torque input and output, as well as ratio variations. A control strategy with feedbacks for both the roller swing and the piston displacement is applied for ratio control based on stability and responsiveness considerations. The model has been implemented systematically in Matlab/Simulink environment. The effectiveness of the ratio control system in terms of stability and accuracy is illustrated by the simulation results included in this paper.

Abstract The surface fatigue failures of the traction drive rollers are different to that of gears and bearings because of the high traction force, skew and small slip ratio. In this research, fatigue tests of traction rollers were performed in different slip ratios and skew angles. The effects of running conditions on the fatigue lives of traction drive rollers are clarified and explained based on the surface crack growth and wear situations. Although a higher slip ratio will make a lower fatigue life, the fatigue strength will increase inversley under the skew conditions, because of the differences in mechanical and tribological condition for surface crack growth and the severe surface wear, which diminishes the surface crack length. For evaluation of the effects of such as slip ratio and skew on the fatigue strength of traction rollers, a new method is put forward in which the relationship between the surface temperature index and fatigue life is used instead of S-N curve.

The article discusses models for optimizing the maintenance eservice process (MS) of complex objects of radio-electronic technics (RET). The statement of the problem determining optimal parameters of objects MS is formulated for the case if the state maintenance strategy MS (MSS strategy) is used. As a criterion of optimization, the requirement minimum unit cost of operating an object for a given period of its operation is used, provided that the required level of failure-free operation of the object is estimated as estimated by “mean time on failures”. The objective functions of the optimization task are determined by modeling the process of MS and repair (MSandR) of the object. This circumstance explains the choice of a search method for an approximately optimal solution to the problem: simplest relaxation method of direct enumeration is used, controlled by a human expert who solves this problem in the interactive dialogue mode between the user and the computer. The methodology for determining approximately optimal parameters of strategy MSS described in this article is intended for use in the development of object RET. The methodology allows the early stages of development to pre-evaluate possibility of increasing level reliability of the facility due MS. At later stages of development, when all technical solutions have already become known, elements for which there are measurable determining parameters become known, preliminary estimates of the necessary parameters MSS can be refined and corrected design decisions. Corresponding refinement of calculations should be made every time when accurate data on the reliability of component parts appear. Software (SW) was developed for computer support of the solution search process. SW developed by Delphi programming tools.
