In a double-blind cross-over study the analgesic and anti-inflammatory action of ibuprofen 1600 mg/day in cases of rheumatoid arthritis has been compared with aspirin 4 g/day, metiazinic acid 1 .5 g/day and a placebo, lactose. Each compound was administered in identical capsules and in a totally randomised order to all patients studied. Assessment of the articular index, grip strength, knee score, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and subjective improvement was made before and after one week's treatment with each drug. In the doses used in this trial, the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of metiazinic acid in rheumatoid arthritis, was found to be approximately equipotent to that of aspirin, while ibuprofen seemed to be slightly more potent and to cause fewer side-effects.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune disease with unknown etiology and pathogenesis. Although major therapeutic advances have been made in recent years, there is no cure for the disease. Current medications mainly reduce inflammation in order to relieve pain and slow joint damage, but many have potentially serious side effects. Therefore, to find specific biomarkers will benefit both RA patients to find relief from the disease and physicians to monitor the disease development. A number of biomarkers have been discovered and used clinically, and others are still under investigation. The autoantibodies, which are widely used in diagnosis and prognosis, novel biomarkers, which reflect clinical disease activity, and newly found biomarkers and pathogenic-related cytokines are discussed in this review.

Impaired gallbladder emptying is a recognized sign of acalculous gallbladder disease (AGBD). The emptying function was studied by ultrasonographic monitoring before and after ingestion of fat-containing food in a prospective study comprising 124 patients (136 examinations). In 17 patients the antero-posterior diameter of the gallbladder was unchanged or increased postprandiallly in addition to the onset of abdominal pain and nausea, signs interpreted as consistent with AGBD. Cholecystectomy, performed in 12 of these individuals, revealed histopathologic changes of different degree in 11 and adhesions of the gallbladder to adjacent organs in 8. The method is simple to perform, cheap, has no side effects and gives a low rate of false positive diagnoses.
