AbstractIn the last decades, the availability of data about the structure of social, technological and biological systems has provided important insights on the mechanisms governing their correct functioning and robustness. These mechanisms are grounded on the complex backbone of interactions among the constituents of the system, which include both topological and dynamical aspects. Here, we analyze interdependent networks composed of two layers of interacting neuronal units and explore their robustness when these synthetic cultures are subjected to damage in the form of either targeted attack or failure. Our results show that the functionality of these networks does not decrease monotonically with damage but, on the contrary, they are able to increase their level of activity when the experienced damage is sufficiently strong.

Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is a serious, yet underdiagnosed condition that can cause severe lower extremity pain in running athletes. CECS is a transient increase in compartment pressure leading to severe pain, paresthesia, and vascular compromise. Understanding the detailed anatomy is paramount to proper diagnosis and treatment. Diagnosis is made with measuring compartments pressures before and after exercise at certain time intervals. When properly diagnosed and treated, CECS can be appropriately managed and patients can return to their previous level of activity.

One of the currently promoted methods of counteracting climate change is nature-based climate solutions, which harness the power of nature to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable management of ecosystems is a guarantee for sustained human well-being. This underestimated, but extremely efficient and cheap method of integrating nature resources into the urban fabric is an economic “injection” for communal authorities. These “green” benefits should be standard in land-use planning in the era of anthropocentrism. Solutions based on nature were the reason for investigating their perception by Polish municipalities. The survey covered the entire country (all 2477 municipalities) from 20 July to 31 August 2021 through an electronic survey, obtaining 2128 responses (85.9% return rate). In the final result, data were obtained that support the hypotheses posed in the study. The main objective of the research was to check the level of activity of municipalities in Poland in the field of proecological activities using nature-based solutions (NbS). The survey results confirmed little knowledge of nature-based solutions, at the same time giving it an educational dimension. Half of the respondents declared that they learned about NbS only from the survey. Polish decision makers and municipal authorities introduce some solutions based on nature without being aware of their European classification and adequate nomenclature. Environmental awareness in Poland remains largely the domain of urban municipalities, with higher current budget revenues per capita and in the central and western parts of the country. NbS are marginal in rural municipalities, which can be explained by the lack of ecological specialists, less car traffic and more single-family houses and thus modest public areas. The following surveys covering the entire territory of Poland are the first to be carried out on such a large scale.

Proteases are enzymes used in industries such the production and processing of detergents, food, leather, and silk. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify protease‐producing bacteria from a sludge disposal site and from sediments. Soil samples were collected separately from the selected area. Samples weighing 1 g were serially diluted and spread onto skim milk agar. A total of 16 bacteria species were isolated from the study samples. Four bacterial isolates showed high proteolytic activity and were selected for enzymatic study based on their zone of proteolysis. The isolates were identified based on biochemical tests. The results indicated that the isolated bacteria were E. coli (99.69%), Pseudomonas putrefaciens (Shewanella putrefaciens) (91.61%), Bacillus carboniphilus (92.78%), and Lysinibacillus sphaericus (98.4%). The crude protease enzymes produced by these bacterial isolates showed promising results for application in dehairing and destaining as detergent additives. Bacillus carboniphilus showed the best level of activity and was selected as the most potent protease‐producing bacteria for both dehairing and destaining ability. Soils from sludge disposal sites and sediments from around tannery wastes could be good sources from which to isolate alkaline protease‐producing bacteria.

The article examines the question of emotions experienced by patients, users of medical portals, who “found themselves” in the complex structure of the healthcare system in Poland, emotions arising from interactions with medical professionals, and in the process of experiencing the course of disease. Statements published by users of medical portals/internet forums were analyzed. The research sample consisted of 15 medical portals with high level of activity of registered users. The analysis was based on statements describing the situation (or its context, or actions of participants involved in the interactions) determining the experienced emotions.

The purpose of the Article. The article is devoted to the study of modern media resources as ways of communication between an accordionist-performer and the audience on the example of using the world’s most popular social networks: Facebook, YouTube, Instagram. The research methodology involves the use of methods of analysis and synthesis, systematization, generalization. Scientific novelty. Defining the components of the digital compass of a domestic accordionist in the context of the digital strategy of Europe. Conclusions. The study showed that in the creative activity of musicians, including accordionists, there is a rapid development of the latest means of communication. The online media, which are most often used in the music sphere, are characterized, the specifics of the content of popular social networks depending on the target audience are analyzed on specific examples. The main problems associated with the use of the latest methods of communication by domestic artists have been identified: a lower level of activity in the Internet space compared to foreign artists, as well as a “digital divide” between different generations. The “Digital Compass of a Modern Accordionist” has been proposed as a tool for solving the above problems, and its components have been identified. Keywords: music culture, accordion art, media resources, social networks, information technologies, communication, intercultural communication.

The article raises the problem of sociological measurement of the subjectivity of the population. The subjectivity of the population is examined through the prism of studying the existing social relations in the power-society system on the example of the implementation of 12 national projects. It is noted that the solution to this problem is possible through the development of a system of empirical indicators. Based on the results of the sociological study, the following groups of indicators for measuring the subjectivity of the population have been identified. First, these are indicators that assess the position of an individual in relation to the work of the authorities and administration; secondly, indicators characterizing the level of activity of an individual’s life position; thirdly, these are the social and status characteristics of potential participants and their resource potential; and finally, these are indicators aimed at identifying social attitudes towards interaction with authorities and readiness for social self-organization. Special attention is paid to the issue of the possibility of sociological measurement of the level of subjectivity of the population. Three levels of such subjectivity are proposed: high, medium and low. The indicators that influence the level of manifestation of subjectivity of the population are highlighted. These include the degree of significance for the individual of the implemented management decision (in this case, a specific national project); forecasting the circle of people who will benefit from the implementation of national projects; the degree of scale of the population’s appeals to various subjects of regional development. In addition, the level of subjectivity of the population is influenced by the degree of interest in interacting with the authorities to discuss significant problems, as well as the willingness to defend their interests. The higher the parameters under consideration, the higher the level of manifestation of subjectivity is.

The COVID-19 pandemic causes increased mental stress and decreased mobility, which may affect people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The study aimed to investigate the secondary impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the level of activity, quality of life (QoL) and PD-related symptoms. The respondents completed an online survey in Polish in the period from December, 2020 to June, 2021. The questionnaire was completed by 47 participants aged 43 to 90 years (mean 72.1 ± 1.3 years). A total of 94% reported reduced contact with family and friends. Over 90% remained active during the pandemic. However, 55% of people with PD showed subjectively lower level of activity then before the pandemic. Moreover, 36% of the respondents felt afraid to visit a doctor and reported problems with access to medication. Subjective QoL reduction was reported by 80%, and 83% declared worsening of PD symptoms. The post pandemic deterioration of motor symptoms in people with PD did not affect their QoL. However, the deterioration of contacts and feelings of isolation had a significant impact on the decline in quality of life (p = 0.022 and p = 0.009, respectively) and the presence of anxiety (p = 0.035 and p = 0.007, respectively). These results may indicate than greater importance of social and mental factors than fitness and health-related factors in the QoL self-assessment of the people with PD.
