scholarly journals Analysing the relationship between learning styles and navigation behaviour in web-based educational system

The aim of our research is to automatically deduce the learning style from the analysis of browsing behaviour. To find how to deduce the learning style, we are investigating, in this paper, the relationships between the learner’s navigation behaviour and his/her learning style in web-based learning. To explore this relation, we carried out an experiment with 27 students of computer science at the engineering school (ESI-Algeria). The students used a hypermedia course on an e-learning platform. The learners’ navigation behaviour is evaluated using a navigation type indicator that we propose and calculate based on trace analysis. The findings are presented with regard to the learning styles measured using the Index of Learning Styles by (Felder and Solomon 1996). We conclude with a discussion of these results.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of user’s learning style (including accommodators, divergers, convergers, and assimilators) on user’s satisfaction on the web-based learning system and their learning effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach This experimental research used the college students from a technology institute in Taiwan as the subject sources. By using the Kolb’s learning style model, the students are classified as four types of learners: convergers, divergers, assimilators, and accommodators. The authors analyzed the relationships among the different learning styles with their effectiveness of learning and satisfaction of using the web-based learning system. The mediation effect of gender is also presented. Findings This research indicates that: first, the satisfaction of the web-based learning system has significant influence on the learning performance of learners; second, different learning styles learners have no significant effect to the satisfaction on using the web-based learning system; third, learning effectiveness has significant difference among different learning style learners on the web-based learning system; the learning effectiveness of accommodators and divergers was significantly higher than the assimilators; fourth, different learning styles learners show significant difference in gender proportion. In addition to accommodators, whose proportion of women is higher than men, the other three learning styles’ proportions in men are higher than women. Research limitations/implications This study was grounded in the Kolb’s learning style theory. The authors provide implications for academic studies in e-learning research stream that aimed at understanding the role of learning style as well as gender differences in the asynchronous web-based learning system. Practical implications Results from this study provided the implications for students, educators, and e-learning system designers. The design of teaching materials as well as functions of e-learning systems should take learners’ learning style into consideration to ensure the best learning outcome. Originality/value This study examined the students’ learning style as well as gender differences in the asynchronous web-based learning system. An experiment was conducted to ensure the data were collected in a controlled environment, thus, offer the value that most of the prior study lacks.

This paper aimed to investigate the online learning experience of a group of ESL students at a higher learning institution in Oman during the Covid-19. The paper studied the interaction between the students’ preferred online learning style and the technologies the students experienced on the e-learning platform (Moodle) for the particular ESL course. The rationale for investigating the relationship between the students’ learning styles and the technologies the students experienced is to evaluate if the learning style and the technologies complement each other. It is also aimed to provide an evaluation of an ESL e-learning course by considering the different technologies that can be incorporated into the e-learning classroom to meet the different learning styles. Data was gathered from 32 undergraduate students by utilizing Kolb’s Learning Styles Inventory. The study included analysis of Moodle utilizing Warburton’s Technologies in Use (2007) to develop an understanding of the technologies the students experienced online. The results of the study revealed that the majority of the students’ preferred learning style is reflected in the technologies they experienced in the online classroom. As the relationship of the technology in use and the students learning style preference in the classroom complements each other, the study revealed that the emphasis of the particular skill-based pedagogy ESL classroom is on receptive skills (listening and reading). The lack of the students’ productive skills (speaking and writing) is a cause for concern to the ESL course instructors, policymakers, and the wider community.

The chapter explored best practices in web-based learning and teaching with a view to discover trends and provide valuable information for all in the e-learning environment. It affirms that paradigms in Web-based education have shifted from teacher-centered to learner-centered but basically it remains synchronous or asynchronous. This requires Learning Objects (LOs) to be pedagogically efficient, designed to standard (Multimodal) with designers bearing in mind the varied population and learning styles. LOs are to be personalized thereby creating adaptive content based on learner's abilities, learning style, level of knowledge and preferences. It is recommended that educators have requisite background knowledge and competencies in technology such as hardware, software, and course management systems etcetera. Instructors, designers and all interested persons should consult a checklist of best practices, for assessing learning object repositories. More so, there is need to incorporate hands-on component into the e-learning environment. The chapter provides Indicators for best practices.

Web-based courses are a popular format in the e-learning environment. Among students enrolled in Web-based courses, some students learn a lot, while others do not. There are many possible reasons for the differences in learning outcomes (e.g., student’s learning style, satisfaction, motivation, etc.). In the last few decades, students’ personality has emerged as an important factor influencing the learning outcomes in a traditional classroom environment. Among different personality models, the Big-Five model of personality has been successfully applied to help understand the relationship between personality and learning outcomes. Because Web-based courses are becoming popular, the Big-Five model is applied to find out if students’ personality traits play an important role in a Web-based course learning outcomes.

Learning is a fundamental element of people’s everyday lives. Learning experiences can take the form of our interactions with others, through attending an educational establishment, etc. Not everyone learns in the same way, and even people who are considered to have a similar standard of abilities or proficiency will exhibit different learning styles. This does not necessarily mean that some students are better than others; it means that students are different from one another. Adaptive e-learning system should be capable of adapting the content to the user learning style, abilities and knowledge level. In this paper, we investigate the benefits of incorporating learning styles and dyslexia type in adaptive e-learning systems. Adaptivity aspects based on dyslexia type and learning styles enrich each other, enabling systems to provide learners with materials which fit their needs more accurately. Besides, consideration of learning styles and dyslexia type can contribute to more accurate student modelling. In this paper, the relationship between learning styles, the Felder–Silverman learning style model (FSLSM), and dyslexia type, is investigated. These relationships will lead to a more reliable student model.

Abstrak Belajar dapat diartikan sebagai proses dari suatu individu yang mengalami perubahan perilakunya akibat bertambahnya pengalaman. Kemampuan seseorang dalam memahami dan menyerap informasi ketika proses belajar pasti berbeda tingkat waktunya, ada yang cepat, sedang maupun lambat. Perbedaan kecepatan ini dipengaruhi beberapa faktor, salah satu faktornya adalah cara atau gaya belajar dari individu tersebut. Gaya belajar memiliki 3 jenis yaitu visual, audio dan kinestetik, pelajar dapat mengetahui gaya belajar yang sesuai dengan cara melakukan tes dengan menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang berkaitan dengan cara belajar individu. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu membuat aplikasi identifikasi gaya belajar berbasis web menggunakan metode incremental. Diharapkan dengan adanya penelitian ini dapat memberikan kontribusi kepada pelajar agar menemukan gaya belajarnya dan berdampak pada pemahaman menyerap informasi ketika proses belajar lebih cepat. Kata kunci : gaya belajar, visual, audio, kinestetik, metode incremental Abstract Learning can be interpreted as the process of an individual who experiences changes in behavior due to increased experience. The ability of a person to understand and absorb information when the learning process must be different levels of time, some are fast, medium or slow. This speed difference is influenced by several factors, one of the factors is the way or learning style of the individual. Learning styles have 3 types, namely visual, audio and kinesthetic, students can find out the appropriate learning style by doing tests by answering questions related to individual learning methods. The purpose of this study is to create a web-based learning style identification application using incremental methods. It is expected that this research can contribute to students to find their learning styles and have an impact on understanding absorbing information when the learning process is faster. Web-based learning environments have become an integral part of learning. The way that they are employed in the learning process, or in other words the learning strategy followed in that respect, is an important issue that has to be carefully thought of, deciding upon topics such as suitable pedagogical approaches and appropriate assessment techniques for a given context. The chapter deals with this exact issue by visiting the relevant literature on the subject, describing selected learning strategies that have been employed in the use of an innovative eLearning platform in schools in Europe and finally outlining and comparing two real case studies from two European countries.

Individual Learning Style identification is an essential aspect in the development of intelligent or adaptive e-Learning platforms. Traditional methods are based on the application of questionnaires or psychological tests, which may not be the most appropriate in all cases. The proposed model is based on the analysis of user behavior through the study of their interactions within an e-Learning platform, using a multilayer Backpropagation Neural Network and Fuzzy Logic concepts, for the preprocessing of the inputs and the categorization of the outputs.

This research was aimed to see the improvement of students’ mastery on concept in learning by using Sequential Learning Style type which was done by combining online instruction and face to face as the supplementary learning. The data was taken from 30 students who took Learning Material Development course in the Information and Technology Education Department of STKIP PGRI Tulungagung in the semester 4 on 2016. This learning was done by using Personalization of Web-Based Learning of Sequential Learning Style Type in which Dokeos was chosen as the e-learning program. The data was collected by using Likert scale of four categories, that is, excellent mastery, good mastery, fair mastery and poor mastery. Based on the data collected from the respondents, it can be concluded that students’ level of mastery is high. 70% of the students stated that they have excellent mastery on the material and 30% of the students stated that they have good mastery on the material. It showed that this strategy can improve the concept of mastery in learning. The finding, therefore, can be used as the basis to develop new strategy in the learning process by using web-based learning personalization

The rapid growth of e-learning has greatly influenced the educational system across the globe. Personality traits and learning styles are both likely to play considerable roles in influencing academic achievement of e-learners. Based on this foundation, a study was designed that attempts to establish the missing links between personality traits, learning styles, and academic performance of students enrolled in various e-learning courses. University students (N=144) completed the Big Five Inventory (BFI), Index of Learning Style (ILS) and reported their grade point average (GPA). One of the Big Five traits i.e. extraversion was positively related with all four learning styles whereas neuroticism was negatively related with all four learning styles. It has also been revealed that GPA was positively correlated with three personality traits and was negatively correlated with neuroticism. Similarly GPA was positively correlated with three learning styles. Finally, there were no significant differences in learning styles and personality traits of e-learners in terms of gender. Implications of these results are expected to help academics, managers, and policy makers for implementation of future e-learning strategies in Pakistan.
