On the Importance of Functioning School Based Management Committees (SBMCs): Evidence from Nigeria

This note examines the effects of School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) on the quality of education in Nigeria based on existing studies and completed programmes. We will investigate whether actions implemented by SBMCs improve learning outcomes and teachers’ performance. In the first section, we will discuss the findings from data collected by the Education Sector Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN). In the second section, we will discuss findings from an exploratory analysis using survey data collected for the Service Delivery Education Indicators (SDI) in Nigeria. In the conclusion, we will discuss some lessons learned and the implications for the RISE Nigeria SBMC research design.

This paper describes improving the quality of education through school-based management, committee involvement and effectiveness of school implementation, curriculum implementation, and learning outcomes in schools. The education stake holders should be able to respond and accommodate the expectations and demands of the community in the decision-making process to improve the quality of education. The process transformation of school-based management should be a major part of the decision-making process in improving the quality of education. While the community is required for the participation in order to better understand education, while the government plays a role in determining the basic framework of education policy.

This study aims to determine the effect of implementing school-based management (SBM) on the quality of education at SDIT Al-Haraki Depok City. The method used in this research is quantitative, namely the data obtained in the form of numbers and the analysis emphasizes numerical processing with statistics. The approach used in this research is correlational which aims to see the effect of the implementation of school-based management on the quality of education. The results obtained from this study state that there is a positive and close influence between the implementation of school-based management (SBM) on the quality of education at SDIT Al-Haraki Depok City which is indicated by the correlation coefficient value r = 0.464, it can be obtained the determination R2 = 0.215, which means that the implementation of school-based management (SBM) has contributed 21.5% to improving the quality of education at SDIT Al-Haraki.

This study is about the implementation of school-based management and the quality of education with a sample of 30 obtained by the results of the r count value of 0.48 after consultation with the interpretation table "r", then the r value of 0.48 is at intervals of 0.40-0 , 59 in the Medium category. Similarly, after consultation with the product moment table r value with N = 30 at a significance level of 95% = 0.361, a rtable of 0.361 was obtained, indicating rcount> rtable (0.48> 0.361). This shows that the implementation of SBM has a moderate role in quality management in MTs Al Mubarok, Tangerang City.

This study aims to find out there is a direct effect of school-based management in the professionalism of teachers. Subjects were teachers who served in secondary schools in Central Lampung, participants were 40 teachers. The study used a survey method causal. The study proved that the school-based management influence on the professionalism of teachers. This means that peninggkatan professionalism of teachers is essentially the improvement of the quality of education within the scope of narrow and wide, can be done by increasing the school-based management.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui, 1) upaya peningkatan mutu pendidikan melalui penerapan manajemen berbasis sekolah pada pen-didikan dasar dan menengah di Provinsi Banten, dan mengetahui, 2) Kontribusi Manajemen Berbasis Sekolah Terhadap Prestasi Ujian Nasional pada Pendidikan Dasar dan Menengah di Provinsi Banten. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif eksploratif. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, observasi dan dokumentasi. Analisis data dilakukan dengan teknik kualitatif dan kuantitif. Dari hasil penelitian dapat dinyatakan bahwa; 1) upaya pe-ningkatanan mutu pendidikan melalui penerapan manajemen berbasis sekolah pada pendidikan dasar dan menengah di Provinsi Banten, dapat dinyatakan bahwa secara keseluruhan telah menerapkan manajemen ber-basis sekolah dalam mengelola Sekolah Dasar, Sekolah Menengah Pertama dan Sekolah Menengah Atas, yaitu rata-rata lima komponen (0,635), dari delapan komponen garapan MBS, dan 2) kontribusi manajemen berbasis sekolah terhadap prestasi ujian nasional pada pendidikan dasar dan menengah di Provinsi Banten, dinyatakan berpengaruh dengan besaran kontribusi adalah masing-masing 0,216 persen untuk sekolah dasar, dan 0,242 persen untuk sekolah menengah pertama serta 0,202 persen untuk sekolah menengah atas, atau rata-rata 0,229 persen untuk pendidikan dasar dan 0,202 persen untuk pendidikan menengah.Kata kunci : kontribusi manajemen berbasis sekolah ______________________________________________________________ EDUCATION QUALITY IMPROVEMENT OF BASIC AND SECONDARY IN THE BANTEN PROVINCE BY OPERATION MANAGEMENT SCHOOLAbstract The objectives of this research are to know: 1) effort to improve the quality of education through school-based management in the primary and secondary education in Banten Province, and 2) contribution of school-based management toward the national test achievement for primary and secondary education in Banten Province. Currently, education management in Indonesia recognizes two mechanisms, namely centralization and decentralization system, in the centralized system of education administration regulated by the central government. This study aims to find out how the implementation of School Based Management (SBM) in KHM NUR Junior High School Surabaya, knowing what programs are implemented in KHM NUR Junior high School Surabaya and aims to determine what factors that support and hinder the implementation of School Based Management (SBM) in an effort to improve the quality of education at KHM NUR Junior High School Surabaya. The type of research used in this study is Field Research, which is studying intensively about the background of the present state, in the interaction of a social, individual, group, institution, and society. Technique of data analysis used qualitative descriptive. The findings of this study can be concluded; first: Implementation of School Based Management (SBM) at KHM. NUR Junior High School Surabaya has been well scheduled. Second: The programs that have been implemented as the implementation of School Based Management (SBM) in KHM. NUR Junior High School Surabaya in academic and non-academic field. Third: Supporting and inhibiting factors in the implementation of School Based Management (SBM) in KHM.    This paper describes essentials of school based management and its implementation.  Theories concerning effective school and leadership are described.  To promote quality of education primarily in the secondary school in Indonesia, four problems have been identified: complex organization system at school level, centralized school management, rigid financial system, and ineffective management.  Problems on this matter have been the focus of implementation of school based management in Indonesia promoting quality of all aspects of education
