This article concerns the archiving of qualitative data in Europe. Its aim is to present selected models of archivization of this type of material in various European institutions, including the British ESCS (Economic and Social Data Service Qualidata) belonging to the UK Data Archive, the Austrian WISDOM (Wiener Institut für Sozialwissenschaftliche Dokumentation und Methodik), the Irish IQDA (Irish Qualitative Data Archive), the German ALLF (Archiv für Lebenslaufforschung), or the OSA (Open Society Archives) operating in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. The examples mentioned give rise to reflections on the need, potential, and limitations of conducting a similar project in Poland. The author discusses the results of the ‘Interpretive Research into Life Styles: Digitalization, Archivization, and Methodological Revisitation’ pilot project and the Archive of Qualitative Data pilot project of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

This article discusses the theoretical and methodological arguments for the archivization of qualitative data in the social sciences, particularly sociology. These arguments are preceded by the presentation of selected research and documentary undertakings (including film) that consist in a return to specific persons and places (or data) after an interval of some years by the same researchers or their successors. Ethnographic revisits are a specific kind of such return. The author reviews and systematizes revisitations in the conviction that the theoretical tools and methodological approaches that have been worked out there—with the characteristic autoreflexiveness of contemporary anthropology—can be used at least in part in new qualitative analyses of sociological data in archives, including the Qualitative Data Archive of the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Philosophy and Sociology.

We describe a pilot project designed to assess the feasibility of re-use across 12 diverse qualitative datasets related to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the UK, from research projects undertaken between 1997 and 2013 – an approach which is chronically underused. First, we consider the sweeping biomedical changes and imperatives relating to HIV in this time frame, offering a rationale for data re-use at this point in the epidemic. We then reflexively situate the processes and procedures we devised for this study with reference to relevant methodological literature. Hammersley’s and Leonelli’s contributions have been particularly instructive through this process, and following their lead, we conclude with further considerations for those undertaking qualitative data re-use, reflecting on the extent to which qualitative data re-use as a practice requires attention to both the given and the constructed aspects of data when assembled as evidence.

The text contains information about The Voices of the 20th Century Archive and Research Group, a department created in 2009 in the Institute of Sociology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The archive is a collection of data from historical—and sometimes forgotten—qualitative research. The Group attempts to complete the information and protect it from destruction. For example, in regard to research into labourers’ life styles in the 1970s, the author shows how difficult it is after years to create a cohesive whole from the scattered materials. She likens the task to putting together a puzzle. She points to the possible advantages of reusing the material, as well as the limitations a contemporary researcher encounters in attempting to make sense of it.

Introduction: Recent guidelines recommend routine pulse oximetric monitoring during endoscopy, however, this has not been the common practice yet in the majority of the local endoscopic units. Aims: To draw attention to the importance of the routine use of pulse oximetric recording during endoscopy. Method: A prospective multicenter study was performed with the participation of 11 gastrointestinal endoscopic units. Data of pulse oximetric monitoring of 1249 endoscopic investigations were evaluated, of which 1183 were carried out with and 66 without sedation. Results: Oxygen saturation less than 90% was observed in 239 cases corresponding to 19.1% of all cases. It occurred most often during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (31.2%) and proximal enteroscopy (20%). Procedure-related risk factors proved to be the long duration of the investigation, premedication with pethidine (31.3%), and combined sedoanalgesia with pethidine and midazolam (34.38%). The age over 60 years, obesity, consumption of hypnotics or sedatives, severe cardiopulmonary state, and risk factor scores III and IV of the American Society of Anestwere found as patient-related risk factors. Conclusion: To increase the safety of patients undergoing endoscopic investigation, pulse oximeter and oxygen supplementation should be the standard requirement in all of the endoscopic investigation rooms. Pulse oximetric monitoring is advised routinely during endoscopy with special regard to the risk factors of hypoxemia. Orv. Hetil., 2013, 154, 825–833.

Dr Szabó, who is on the staff of the Hungarian Museum of Fine Arts, is by training a classical archaeologist and art historian. In recent years he has been concerned with a re-evaluation of eastern Celtic art and is one of the editors of the great newCorpus of Celtic Material in Hungarybeing prepared under the auspices of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The text of Dr Szabó's paper was first delivered to the Vth International Celtic Congress held in Penzance in April 1975.
