Hedonism is a view of life in philosophy that seeks to avoid pain and make pleasure as the main goal in life. People who embrace hedonism tend to over-pursue pleasure. The hedonism lifestyle is mostly carried out by 18th century people especially the nobles who live in high culture. They are as close to hedonism as they are in the Persuasion novel by Jane Austen. Sir Walter Elliot the main character is a nobleman who did a lot of hedonism. Hedonism which is seen as too glorifying personal pleasure to ignore others. The purpose of this study was to find out the types of hedonism done by Sir Walter Elliot in Persuasion. This research uses descriptive qualitative method because all data are in the form of sentences. The researcher uses a philosophical approach and analyzes data using Weijers' theory as the main theory. The results of this study found that Sir Walter Elliot performed two types of hedonism, namely aesthetic hedonism and selfish hedonism.

The research was focused on racial discrimination faced by the major characters and their resistances in 12 Years A Slave novel. This study was aimed This study was aimed to investigate the racial disrimination and the resistances in the novel. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from 12 Years A Slave novel. The data are collected by using documentary techniques. Instrument for collecting the data is using documentary sheet. The results of this research were the racial discrimination and resistances happened in 12 Years A Slave. The racial discrimination in this novel happened towards the Black People and all discriminated people do the resistances to make their life better. As Northup is the main character so he got the most discrimination, then in the second position is Patsey and the last is Eliza Berry. Meanwhile the resistances done the most by Northup until he finally got freedom, and Patsey also did it twice and Eliza Berry did it three times. It can be concluded that the three major character who are slaves got discriminated and they did the resistances to save their life, even its only Northup who got the freedom in the end.

This study deals with social class in British society in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.  The objectives of this study were to find out the impacts of social class toward british society based on the novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen and to describe  social class reflected toward british society in that novel. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were dialogues and narration in Pride and Prejudice novel. The analysis of this study was based on Marxist’s concept (1995:25). The findings of this study were (1) two impacts of social class toward british society found in Pride and Prejudice novel, they were pride and prejudice (2) three types of social classes which were reflected, such as power, wealth, and status.

This study is entitled “Characterization and Three Dimensions of the Main Character in Looking For Alaska”. This study is concerned with the method of the characterization based on the three dimensions of the main character and intrinsic elements in the novel. The main purpose of this study is to find out how the author presents the main character in terms of the physiological, psychological, and sociological dimensions. This study was based on library research and used documentation method in collecting data. Then the data obtained were analyzed descriptively using descriptive qualitative method. Some theories of characterization were used such as the theory of characterization proposed by Kenney (1966), the theory of character dimensions by Egri (1960). The data source of this study is a novel entitled Looking For Alaska by John Green (2011). The analysis started with the overview of the biography of John Green and that was followed by the synopsis of the novel, and the data was categorized based on the theories. Based on Kenney’s theory, the main character is shaped through the mixing method of the characterization. In addition, based on Egri’s theory, there are three character dimensions (physiological, psychological, and sociological) involved in the shaping and presentation of the main character.

The purpose of this study is to reveal sacrifice in Meyer’s Breaking  down. In conducting the study, the writer delimited this study only in reveling sacrifice in Meyer’s Breaking down. Bella focuses on the main character.  The research employs a descriptive qualitative method. It means that all of the data is in the form of words and sentences rather than numbers, and it focuses on the process that produces the results. After analyze the novel the writer may conclude that the kinds of Bella’s sacrifice can be formulated into three categories they are: Willing to stop her study and get married in the very young age, Willing to pregnant event it will endanger her life and the third willing to give up her life for her baby. These three types of sacrifice clearly describe in the novel. Finally, the suggestions are 1) Sacrifice is the very important things in human life, 2) Every relationship needs sacrifice to the sake of others life, 3) Sacrifice is a good moral act that important to become a lesson for everyone.

Feminism is a movement of struggle to fight against all forms of objectification of women. The main character in the Cigarette Girl novel is a very independent woman. It was analyzed through feminism approach if the literary work is related to a woman as one of the characters in the story. The objective of this research is to describe the resistances of woman’s struggle in Cigarette Girl Novel by Ratih Kumala. This reseacrh is analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method and used feminism approach to Beauvoir theory. The findings of this research are women can work, women can become intellectuals, and to transcend its boundaries. The result of this research that the women have same capability to survive in their lives as the men do therefore all the things that is point to them such as second sex, retarded, limited and weak go vague and even disappear because of the story which is told by the writer of the novel.

This research is motivated by the interest of researcherto find out how the personality of the main characterscontained in the trilogy of novel Negeri 5 Menara, Ranah 3 Warna, Rantau 1 Muara by Ahmad Fuadi with literature psychology study. This research uses descriptive qualitative method used to describe personality of main charactertrilogy in these novels. The results showed that the personality of the main character in the trilogy novel as many as 18 personalities.In the novelNegeri5 Menara as many as 5 personalitieswith two personalitiestypeconsist ofphlegmatis (tough, consistent, diligence, empathy) and type choleris(courage). In the novel Ranah 3 Warna as many as 7 personalitieswith two personalitiestype gepasioner(hardworker, strong, confident)and type phlegmatis(intelligent, simple, caring,tough). While, in the novel Rantau 1 Muara as many as 6 personalitieswith three personalities type consist ofphlegmatis(diligent, consistent, care, tough),gepasioner(hard worker) and choleris(courage).Thus, it can be concluded that tough personality is more dominant because the personality is presented in the trilogy novel. It indicates that the main characters havetough personality in studying especially reaching for dreams. This research is implemented in SMAN 11 Kota Tangerang Selatan and it can be concluded that the student understand in analyzing the personality of the main character in the trilogy novel by Ahmad Fuadi.

The study investigates the aplication of Halliday’s theory of experiential function into Batak Toba clauses and to identify the types of experiential functions and the manners in which experiential functions are used by Tumoing in Saut Poltak Tambunan’s novel “Si Tumoing Manggorga Ari Sogot”. The study was conducted to describe type of process, participants function and circumstatial elements of experiential function in the novel. The study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the utterances produced by the main character. The finding showed there were 6 types of processes, 14 types of participants and 8 circumtances in the dialogues of Tumoing. The dominant type of process was Relational process (35,70 %) while Actor as the dominant type of participant (13, 42 %) and Location as the dominant type of circumtance (48,70 %). The findings also showed that the main character was honest person and friendly person. It’s explained by the relational process i.e using atributing and identifying.

Abstract: This study aims to describe the main character in the novel Di Bibirnya Ada Dusta. The method used for research was descriptive qualitative method. To analyze the data, researchers used analytic and dramatic approaches, Semi (in Djojosuroto, 2009: 119). Analytic approach was an approach that describes the character or character by describing the character directly, while the dramatic approach was the approach used by the author in describing the character indirectly. The technique of collecting data in this research is first reading the novel carefully, then marking the parts related to the analytic and dramatic aspects of the main character, the focus of the research, namely the novel Di Bibirnya Ada Dusta by Mira Wijaya, while the became a research sub-focus related to the attitudes and actions of the main characters. After researching it can be concluded, the main character in this novel, namely Ray and Roy. Ray's attitude can be seen from an analytical aspect, which is serious and a liar, while the dramatic attitude depicts Ray's physical athletic, macho, handsome, handsome, and intelligent, while Roy has a physical similar to Ray's when viewed in dramatic terms, namely handsome, macho, intelligent, athletic, and imaginative, while the analytical aspects of Roy's attitude, namely boredom, imaginative, brave, and liar. The results of this study will be used to provide teaching in Indonesian language and literature. With the aim, so students can enhance appreciation, be able to appreciate, and be able to recognize the character of the character that the author has described. Keywords: Character, Novel, and Literature Learning.

The research aims to reveal how the application of dramatic elements of Dashner’s Maze Runner is transformed into its film adaptation. To achieve the purpose, the researcher analyzes seven dramatic elements by Gustav Freytag’s Pyramid which consist of exposition, inciting moment, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, and denouement. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research are the differences of the dramatic elements in the novel and film adaptation are not significant because only the scenes of exposition and rising action are not similar.
