scholarly journals Use of Reclaimed Rubber Cell in Highway Pavement: An Experimental Research

With the rapidly growing number of vehicles around the world, the disposal of the waste and discarded tyres is a serious concern worldwide. There are few investigations reported in the literature w.r.t. the use of the regenerated rubber derived from the waste tyres in the construction of pavements. The highway construction forms a potential sector for the use of such waste whereby the problem of its disposal will get eliminated on one hand and reduce the environmental concern on the other hand. The use of such waste is found to improve the performance and strength of the pavement. This paper presents the limited experimental investigations on the use of innovative reinforcement in the form of rubber cell derived from the regenerated or reclaimed tyres in the pavement application. The rubber cell derived is similar to conventional geocell. The experimental study entails the use of the rubber cell placed within the conventional granular sub-base (GSB) of the conventional flexible pavement through a model pavement. The laboratory model tests were conducted with the help of the test tank of dimensions (1 m × 1m × 1m). The sub-base was placed above the weak subgrade in a test tank. The results of the laboratory model tests indicates the better performance of the pavement with the use of the rubber cell in the sub-base as compared to the performance of the pavement with conventional granular subbase without rubber cell reinforcement. The study confirms the effective utilization of the discarded tyres as a reinforcing material in the pavements.

The disposal of sewage sludge and other waste materials has become a problem in many cities around the world. A study on the use of sewage sludge and other waste materials for land reclamation has been conducted. One of the methods studied is to dispose of the sludge after it has been mixed with binders or other waste materials and then to consolidate the mixture on site using surcharge and prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs). To study the consolidation behaviour of the sludge–binder mixtures around PVDs, model tests using a fully instrumented consolidation tank were conducted. Some of the test results are presented in this paper. The study shows that PVDs are effective in consolidating the sludge and binder mixtures, provided that the PVDs used can sustain large bending and resist corrosion by the chemicals in the sludge.Key words: consolidation, geoenvironmental, land reclamation, prefabricated vertical drains.

Governance, the world over, has become the main framework for assessing the effective utilization of human and material resources for the development of a nation or an organization. This paper explores the link between governance failure, violence and its implication for internal security in Rivers State. The level of violence in the state is high and increasing particularly since 1999 when the nation returned to civil rule. Violence such as inter and intra communal conflicts, cult violence, armed robbery, kidnapping, political violence among others, now writ large in the state. The study utilized the qualitative and content analysis. The paper reveals that the pervasive nature of violence with negative effect on the internal security is the fall out of the failure of the governance in the state. The paper recommends, among other things that, good governance is a tool for empowering the people, which in turn, will reduce unemployment, poverty, marginalization and the recourse to violent aggression in the state.

In this research the work methodology include the software program SEEP/W routine of the GEOSLOPE 2012; which was used to simulate and analyze the vertical drainage of the pavement cross section using steady-state and transient analysis. A laboratory model consisting of typical structure layers of flexible pavement was considered in this research with a 2% slope with the influence of three different rain intensities (30mm/min, 60mm/min and 90mm/min); in which each one has a duration differs from the other. The results indicated that the value of the pore-water pressure in the surface layer resulting from 90 mm/min rainfall intensity is 83.65% greater than the pressure generated by the 60mm/min intensity of rain and 91.076% greater than the pressure produced from 30mm/min intensity. The average of accumulation water produced by the 30mm/min rainfall intensity in the pavement structure is 44.73 % greater than the average of accumulation of water from the 60mm/min intensity and 77.85% higher than the 90mm/min intensity of rain. The water flux through the pavement cross section during the rainy period of 30 mm/min was 8.42% higher than the water flux of 60 mm/min and 49.82% of the water flux of 90 mm/min intensity of rain.

India has experienced one of the fastest economic growth rates in the world which has been a dramatic driver in the nature and scale of impact on the country’s environment and natural resources. Environmental risks and problems are widening. The issues of managing environment impacts are capturing public attention. With increasing awareness of environmental protection worldwide, the green trend of conserving the Earth’s resources and protecting the environment is overwhelming, thereby exerting pressure on corporations in India. The pressure and drive accompanying globalization has prompted enterprises to improve their environmental performance (Zhu and Sarkis, 2006). Consequently, corporations have shown growing concern for the environment over the past ten years (Sheu, et al., 2005). The pressure on corporations to improve their environmental performances comes from globalization rather than localization (Sarkis and Tamarkin, 2005). Boyle is often remembered for the contributions that he made to the sciences of chemistry and pneumatics. Like other natural philosophers in seventeenth-century England, however, he was a synthetic thinker who sought to advance knowledge in all areas of human concern. An early advocate of experimental methods, he argued that experimentation would not only reveal the hidden processes operative in the world but would also advance the cause of religion. Through the study of nature, experimentalists would come to understand that the intricacy of design manifest in the world must be the result of an omniscient and omnipotent creator. Boyle’s experimental investigations and theological beliefs led him to a conception of the world as a ’cosmic mechanism’ comprised of a harmonious set of interrelated processes. He agreed with the leading mechanical philosophers of his day that the corpuscular hypothesis, which explains the causal powers of bodies by reference to the motions of the least parts (corpuscles) of matter, provided the best means for understanding nature. He insisted, however, that these motions and powers could not be known by reasoning alone, but would have to be discovered experimentally.
