This work examined the nexus amongst impression management (IM) and organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) of hotels in Rivers state, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was conducted, covering a population of 341 workers (341) from twenty hotels. The study drew a sample size of 181 workers. The study employed a basic random sampling method. Copies of the questionnaire were distributed for data collection. The spearman rank order correlation coefficient was used to analyze the hypotheses. According to the studies, self-promotion and exemplification have a strong correlation with indicators of corporate citizenship behavior. Thus, the study concluded that a well-executed impression management approach in the form of self-promotion and exemplification in hotels would aid in the enhancement of an employee’s altruistic and attentive conduct. The study suggested, among other, that hotel workers employ a diplomatic self-promotion technique of impression management in order to increase the organization’s altruistic behavior.

Contamination is the release of hazardous materials into the environment; which could be in the form of: waste, petroleum hydrocarbons and other unwanted materials. The release of these hazardous materials could affect soil nutrients and aggravate biodiversity loss. When the soil nutrient is impacted, it negatively affects its crop yield and production capabilities. Once there is contamination of the environment, remediation becomes necessary. This paper examines the effects of remediation of crude oil contaminated land on agricultural resources in Umuechem in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique and a survey research design was adopted with the use of structured questionnaires administered on a sample size of sixty two (62) persons whose farmlands and other agricultural resources were contaminated and thereafter remediated. The sample size was made up of fifty four (54) literate and eight (8) illiterate persons. The questionnaire was interpreted in native language to the illiterate persons by either their children or any other relative. The data obtained from the survey were analysed using descriptive statistics such as tables and statistical package for social sciences (SPSS).The findings obtained indicated that there was a post-remediation low-crop-yield and recommended that remediation consultants should adopt techniques capable of completely removing contaminants from the environment.

This paper assesses the impact of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) activities on economic development in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. To achieve this theme, an instrument Called Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Survey Questionnaire (SMEQ) was developed which focused more on employment generation and poverty reduction. The population of the study was chosen based on the two thousand six hundred and thirty-four (2634) registered SMEs with the Rivers State Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2019. Based on simple random sampling technique, a total of three hundred and thirty-eight (338) respondents were sampled. Relying on descriptive statistics and logistic regression estimation techniques, the data were analyzed. Analyses of the respondents’ opinion suggest that the major businesses engaged in the study area were restaurant, tailoring and beauty/hair dressing. Again, majority of the respondents were of the opinion that SMEs operators do not have increased access to basic social-economic amenities. The output of the logistic regression result has it that an increase in firm size can improve the chances of SMEs fostering economic development in Obio-Akpor while increase in the salary of employees could also enhance the chances of SMEs to redress the rising poverty level too. The paper thus recommends that employment tax incentives should be granted to proprietors of SMEs and taming of the rising insecurity cases across the country.   Received: 11 September 2021 / Accepted: 25 November 2021 / Published: 5 January 2022

This study assessed the impacts of HIV/AIDS programmes on sexual health among youths of Obiyebe community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA of Rivers State. The purpose of the study was to identify HIV/AIDS programmes on sexual health, to assess the knowledge of HIV/AIDS programmes on sexual health among the youths and to examine the impacts of HIV/AIDS programmes on sexual health among youths. The study adopted a descriptive survey study design with a sample size of 83 participants which are selected through a simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection, while a frequency table and simple percentage were used as the instrument for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that HIV/AIDS programmes on sexual health are; HIV/AIDS testing programmes, HIV/AIDS treatment programmes, HIV/AIDS prevention programmes, and United Nations Programmes on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). Another finding of the study showed that sexuality, condoms, sexual anatomy and sex, and adolescence sexual features and puberty are the knowledge of sexual health among the youths that enhance their good sexual health and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Again the study revealed that the impacts of HIV/AIDS programmes on the sexual health of the youths were that their understanding of sexuality is increased, they understand the importance of using condoms if sexually active, there is a reduction in unwanted teenage pregnancies, they are informed of their normal sexual features development, puberty, reproductive anatomy and physiology, they are informed of the option to delay sexual activity until they are ready (matured), and there is a reduction of new HIV/AIDS/ other STI infections. The study made some recommendations and suggestions.

Purpose: This work examined Business-Information Technology Alignment and Sustainability of State-Owned Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria. The objective was to investigate the relationship between strategy-driven alignment and sustainability of state-owned tertiary institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria. Methodology: To achieve this, two research questions and hypotheses were designed to guide the study. The population for this work comprised 1,224 staff between grade level 11 and above in the five state-owned tertiary institutions in Rivers State.   The sample size of this study consisted of 302 selected using the Taro-Yamane sampling technique.  The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. The test for the internal regularity of the instrument was conducted using Spearman Rank Order correlation. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions; Statistical Package for Social Science out version 23.0 was used to test the null hypotheses. Findings: It was found that strategy-driven alignment significantly influenced the sustainability of quality service delivery of the state-owned tertiary institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria; the study therefore concluded that adopting the concept of business-information technology alignment will invariably result to sustainability in tertiary institutions. Recommendation: The study recommended among other things that: Federal and state governments as well as tertiary institution’s management should, as a matter of urgency, develop credible strategy-driven alignment approach that will ensure that the unique objectives of the tertiary institutions are derived seamlessly while using IT, that tertiary institution management should fore-handily train all IT staff on the objectives of the institution so that everyone in IT has a visceral understanding of the institutions intention with regards to quality service delivery.

Waste Management can be quite challenging, especially in the developing world. The challenge becomes even more complex with the growing population. City planners and decision makers are turning to technology to improve the efficiency of the waste management process. Geospatial technologies have offered a range of solutions, which have been deployed with success in waste management. This paper highlights the challenges of waste management in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and how the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) deployed the use of GIS in solving most of the challenges of identification, planning, evacuation, and transportation of wastes within the Port Harcourt metropolis. This paper looked at how this solution was deployed to solve key challenges as well as stimulate citizen participation in the waste management process. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations for expanding the potentials of its application.

Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) was used to evaluate the effect of lithology on aquifer transmissivity and conductivity in parts of Rivers State, Nigeria. A total of 10 Vertical Electrical Sounding were conducted at ten locations. The VES data were collected using ABEM terrameter SAS 300B and processed using Win-Resist Software and Microsoft Excel Sheet. The effect of the lithology on aquifer transmissivity and conductivity were analyzed. Result from the Vertical Electrical Sounding revealed a four to six geoelectric layers. The aquifer resistivity values range from 39.40Ωm to 17290.7Ωm. Results of the aquifer conductivity values range from 0.005 to 2.538cm/s with the highest value dominating in the central part of the study area suggesting large grain sands that can permeate groundwater flow while the transmissivity values range from 0.22587cm/s2 to 132.487 cm/s2 with average of 19.1587cm/s2. Area with high transmissivity is identified with high groundwater potential permeable with groundwater flow is seen in the central part of the study area with range of 110 to 135 cm/s2 indicating a thick sandy aquifer. Result from the nearby borehole in correlation with the VES point showed an agreement with the VES data at Ogale Eleme and Elelenwo location. The result of the study can be applied in ground water resources management, hydrological studies and provides valuable information for town planner.

Abstract: The aim of this research is to use a combination of renewable energy sources and conventional diesel generator to model a cost effective, alternative energy source for telecommunication base stations in Nigeria. Actually, this study uses various theoretical and mathematical modelling tools, such as, Mat lab Simulink and HOMER software. In the same way, the study references several Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) from gsm providers at select geographical locations in Rivers State. The study references BTS infrastructure in locations such as Ogoni, Port Harcourt and Emohua. These locations were selected to reflect different climatic conditions in Rivers state. Against this background, various hybrid combinations comprising at least two sources of renewable energy e.g Wind Turbine generator(WTG) and Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) were modelled. Also, Fuzzy logic optimization algorithm was used in tracking the maximum power in the SPV. A sample Diesel Generator(DG) was studied to analyze which possible combination gives optimum performance and is most cost effective. The total cost for installation and maintenance of the hybrid system was also considered. Consequently, one of the common negative effects of conventional power generation and usage, which is environmental pollution, was also highlighted during the study. In the course of this research, Homer was used to model a hybrid system in which the initial capital Cost (ICC) was N101,517,040 for 96 nos battery, 1 no 10kw WTG, 1 no hydro-turbine, 48 nos converters, labour etc. The replacement cost for component has a depreciation of 30%; while maintenance for diesel is 30% of the ICC. Eventually, the results obtained from the simulations showed that with an increase in supply from renewable energy sources the overall cost spent when compared to using a diesel generator only is cut by 50%, while the pollution effects also dropped. In fact, the cost also reduces if the renewable energy system is designed efficiently to track and harness maximum power. Furthermore, it is also evident that the location of the base station site and the availability of Renewable energy source affects the efficiency and cost of the entire system. Hence, it is recommended that any telecommunication company which intends installing a hybrid power system for its base stations must carry out detailed feasibility studies using input parameters described here; especially, as it relates to siting of base stations in rural off-grid areas.
