Seerah of the Prophet falls mainly under Orientalist studies evolving from an early skeptical normative to revisionism, higher criticism, biblical literary criticism and Hagarism. This perpetual change of Western academic methodology seems to indicate their fragile and non-traditional academic approach. The Orientalists like Goldziher and Schacht have been able to transform skeptical theories considerably to the extent ‘revisionist’ theories have emerged. In this paper, a critical review of modern Western critique has been discussed while conjecturing about its lacunas at the same time.

Cervantes goza de un enorme protagonismo en la literatura británica del siglo XVIII. Su influencia se pone de manifiesto en Joseph Andrews, que Henry Fielding subtituló “Written in Imitation of the Manner of Cervantes”, y en producciones de autores como Tobias Smollett o Charlotte Lennox. La visión de la crítica cobra un valor significativo a mediados de siglo, con el nacimiento de The Monthly Review y The Critical Review que proporcionaban exámenes de novedades bibliográficas. En este trabajo se plantea el estudio de la huella cervantina en la novela británica a partir de las valoraciones críticas producidas por ambas publicaciones periódicas desde sus inicios hasta finales de siglo.

In 1758, after thirty years of hack writing, James Ralph published The Case of Authors by Profession, a short pamphlet which vigorously defended professional writers and severely arraigned their principal employers, the booksellers, theatre managers, and politicians. The essay received favorable comment in the Monthly Review and the Critical Review as a just appraisal of the difficulties of authorship. It has additional interest because Oliver Goldsmith may very well have received from it certain ideas which appeared in his Essay on the Present State of Polite Learning in Europe, and because from it Isaac D'Israeli quoted, without acknowledgement, extensive passages which appeared in his Calamities of Authors.

RESUMENLas revistas literarias inglesas «The Monthly Review» (1749-1845) y «The Critical Review» (1756-1817) volcaron su atención hacia la producción de reseñas bibliográficas de trabajos según iban apareciendo en el mercado editorial tanto británico como internacional. Conventionally speaking, the current Muslim law of inheritance is habitually considered as a sufficient and final form of legal formula that reflects the true spirit of Islamic Law ordained by God. The majority of Muslims currently are of belief that the ulama of the first generation have passed down to us the most complete and sophisticated set of law based on their acute interpretation of the Qur’an and the Sunnah. This belief however has now been subjected to a severe criticism by the contemporary critiques especially from the like of David S. Powers. His Studies in Qur’an and Hadith: The Formulation of the Islamic Law of Inheritance that employs the historical and literary criticism approach discovered that there are other sides of Muslim inheritance law. This work challenges the established belief among the traditional Muslims and offers a new legal paradigm whereby a legal ruling must bee seen as reflecting a social and historical dimension. This paper in every respect is a critical review of Powers’ book.

En el siglo XVIII, la prensa literaria inglesa ofrecía al lector valoraciones críticas sobre las novedades editoriales que salían al mercado. Esta labor periodística, que proporciona una visión sobre la recepción de obras y autores concretos, se ha empleado en este trabajo para estudiar la huella de Miguel de Cervantes en la tradición literaria inglesa en aquella centuria. Desde esta perspectiva, se ha llevado a cabo una recopilación de textos publicados en las revistas especializadas en la revisión de obras impresas The Monthly Review (1749-1845) y The Critical Review (1756-1817), poniendo el foco en los juicios de valor emitidos sobre las traducciones y ediciones de la obra cervantina. El propósito ha sido evaluar la recepción de estos trabajos, así como dar visibilidad al discurso que se articuló en torno a la figura de Cervantes y su producción literaria.
