Dante’s Gluttons: Food and Society from the Convivio to the Comedy explores how in his work medieval Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) uses food to articulate, reinforce, criticize, and correct the social, political, and cultural values of his time. Combining medieval history, food studies, and literary criticism, Dante’s Gluttons historicizes food and eating in Dante, beginning in his earliest collected poetry and arriving at the end of his major work. For Dante, the consumption of food is not a frivolity, but a crux of life in the most profound sense of the term, and gluttony is the abdication of civic and spiritual responsibility and a danger to the individual body and soul as well as to the collective. This book establishes how one of the world’s preeminent authors uses the intimacy and universality of food as a touchstone, communicating through a gastronomic language rooted in the deeply human relationship with material sustenance.

The working-class writer, having moved into a middle-class dominated field, often feels alienated from their old and new cultures – separated as they are from their heritage and not quite grounded in the new elite circle. The markers of working-class culture are much harder to define in our hyper-modern situation, and this exacerbates the alienation. This position opens up possibilities in perception and expression from those in the margins and off-kilter positions. Tracing the multivoiced qualities of Tony Harrison’s ‘V’ and R. M. Francis’s poetics, alongside biographical and autobiographical details, this hybrid article argues that off-kilter and outcast voices, like those in the aforementioned class liminality, are in the best place to explore and discuss the difficult to navigate cultures, communities and identities. This fusion of personal essay, poetry and literary criticism considers the unusual, marginal and liminal positioning of working-class writers, researchers and academics.

The selection of appropriate approach(es) to teaching literature in EFL classrooms becomes a necessity that they can result in good performance of the students, both in their critical thinking aspect and their language proficiency. The problem appears when the lecturer does not implement a suitable approach to literary analysis when teaching literature to the EFL students. These problems led to the student’s inability to perform as expected. The present study examines how lecturers perceive the implementation of approaches to teaching literature in EFL classrooms and their relations to improving the students’ reflective writing skills as the manifestation of the student’ responses to the literary works. Among the approaches studied were the Language-based approach, the Reader-Response approach, and the Philosophical approach. The study was carried out on six lecturers teaching the Literary Criticism course in the EFL classrooms at the university level. A questionnaire was distributed to the lecturers teaching this course at a university in Semarang, Indonesia, containing eight-question items regarding how they perceive the literary approaches and how effective they used them in improving the students’ reflective writing skills, in encouraging the students to think critically about the events in literary works and in relating the readings to some aspects of their own lives. The study revealed that each literary analysis approach in teaching literature has its benefits and characteristics. The study results also showed that each approach has its strengths and weaknesses that differ from one another.

Literary criticism is defined as a science and try to investigate literary work with analyse and comparison. The purpose of this study is to get some information and to identify the race milieu and moment in literary work. Outlined Hipollyte Taine perspective in three concepts, namely (1) race, (2) Milieu, and (3) Moment. This phenomenon occurs in Titanic film by James Cameron. The researcher using Qualitative descriptive methods to analyse race, milieu and moment in Titanic film by James Cameron. The data collected by recording the data. Data analysed using Hippolyte Taine and Guerin theory for historical biographical approach. The result of analysis found that the disparity in the status of ship passengers for the poorer and upper classes is depicted in James Cameron's film Titanic as evidence of social class inequality. Because of his act of obtaining an award despite being in the lower class, Jack, as a class representative, does not have the right to be considered a person at the bottom. Mileu pits the position of social class against the community, which is backed up by the class division. Meanwhile, Moment is viewed through the lens of a social class that exists between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, as evidenced by the numerous forms of discrimination discovered.


En este artículo se estudia la importancia que Internet ha tenido en los últimos años en la recepción de las poetas españolas contemporáneas. Para ello, se recurre tanto a la teoría literaria feminista y al ciberfeminismo como a algunas de las contribuciones clave en el estudio de los procesos de canonicidad, específicamente, a la sociología de Pierre Bourdieu y a la teoría de los polisistemas de Itamar Even-Zohar. Desde este marco teórico, se analiza la antología virtual Cien de cien de Elena Medel, una selección que permite repensar las relaciones entre autoridad, cánones y cibercultura en el siglo XXI. Abstract: This article aims to study the importance that the Internet has had in the reception of Spanish women poets in the last few years. For that purpose, feminist literary criticism and cyberfeminism will be used, as well as some of the key contributors to the study of canon, particularly Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology and Itamar Even-Zohar’s theory of polysystems. With this theoretical framework, attention will be paid to the digital anthology Cien de cien by Elena Medel, which enables us to rethink the relationship between authority, literary canons and cyberculture in the 21st Century.

Resumo: A proposta deste artigo é esquisitar pontes e aproximar os feminismos contra- hegemônicos da América Latina, mais especificamente do Brasil, dos pensamentos produzidos pelas Chicanas, na fronteira entre os EUA e o México. Através dessa aproximação, buscamos potencializar a crítica literária feminista brasileira ao considerar processos de produção de conhecimento advindos de posicionamentos marginalizados. Enquanto a conceituação do esquisito vem do trabalho da pesquisadora brasileira Eliana Ávila (2015), a construção de pontes entre distintos grupos marginalizados emerge do pensamento fronteiriço de Gloria Anzaldúa e Cherríe Moraga (1981). Os trabalhos de Lélia Gonzalez (1984, 1988) e Larissa Pelúcio (2012) também se entrelaçam aos de autoras Chicanas para questionar relações de poder a apagamentos culturais históricos. Ao esquisitar pontes, desenvolve-se diálogos e articulações a partir de uma visão conscientemente parcial capazes de encontrar as potencialidades políticas para construções epistemológicas que levam em consideração os saberes localizados. É desse posicionamento que reforçamos a proposta de um queer esquisito e questionamos as relações geográficas de poder a partir de uma perspectiva brasileira.Palavras-chave: pontes; esquisito; queer; chicana; geopolítica; feminismo.Abstract: The objective of this article is to esquisitar (queer, in a free translation) bridges and to bring closer counter-hegemonic feminisms from Latin-America, more specifically from Brazil, and those developed by the Chicanas, in the borders between the USA and Mexico. Through this dialogue, we intend to potentialize the Brazilian feminist literary criticism by considering processes of knowledge production from marginalized positions. While the concept of esquisito comes from the works of the Brazilian researcher Eliana Ávila (2015), the construction of bridges between distinct groups emerges from the border thinking of Gloria Anzaldúa e Cherríe Moraga (1981). The works of Lélia Gonzalez (1984; 1988) and Larissa Pelúcio (2012) are also intertwined to the ones from Chicana authors to question power relations and historical cultural invisibilities. By esquisiting bridges, it is possible to develop political potentialities and epistemological constructions that take into consideration situated knowledges. From this perspective, we reinforce the proposal of an esquisito queer and question the geopolitics from a Brazilian point of view.Keywords: bridges; esquisito; queer; chicana; geopolitics; feminism.

The subject of scientific research is the textual analysis of the translation of one of the most famous gazelles by a brilliant Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi (1141-1209) "Amade bud" ("Came") from Persian into the Azerbaijani and Russian languages. The article discusses in detail the imagery created in these translations and their adequacy to the original, as well as a comparative semantic analysis of each beit; it interprets some situational free interpretations of the original made by translators. In each beit are analyzed the concepts on which the transmission of images is built in translation into Azerbaijani and Russian which in poetic translation include size, rhythm, a number of poetic figures and other artistic means. The study was carried out with the use of theoretical-literary and comparative-analytical methods and at the junction of literary criticism and translation studies. The novelty of the work lies in the fact that the research approach applied by the author in comparative analysis allows us to identify methods and means of rendering the high imagery of the primary source in translations of the classical gazelle into Azerbaijani and Russian by recognized poets-translators − Jafar Khandan (1911-1961) and Arseny Tarkovsky (1907-1989), which makes an undoubted contribution to the development of the basic translation problem − the adequacy of literary translation. Naturally, the concept of imagery in the three texts is expressed differently, due to the typological differences of the compared languages. The Azerbaijani language is agglutinative, while the Persian and Russian languages are inflective. Accordingly, in the comparative analysis all the linguistic subtleties of each language are taken into account in the process of poetic imagery creation as well as their adequacy. Also, a detailed textual conceptual comparative analysis of the poetic text of one gazelle in three languages − the original Persian and translated Azerbaijani and Russian − allows us to draw an important conclusion that an adequate translation fiction text is undoubtedly a work of art in itself that has a long-term aesthetic and substantive value, which makes the position of a number of translation scholars insisting on the need of updating translations irrelevant.
