Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inammatory disease with multisystem involvement. Psoriasis is an immune mediated skin disease characterized by hyperproliferation of keratinocytes9 which is initiated and maintained by inammatory mediators. Objective: To determine the serum lipid disturbances in psoriasis. To assess the signicance of lipoprotein (a) levels in psoriasis. Materials And Methods: 30 Number of cases of patients suffering from Psoriasis in the age group of 15-75 was included in the study.30 age and sex matched healthy volunteers served as controls. Results: Signicant elevation in levels of fasting glucose, creatinine, total cholesterol.triglycrides, VLDL, LDL, Lipoprotein (a), and Malondialdehyde (MDA) was observed in cases compared with controls. Conclusions: It is important to measure serum lipid level particularly cholesterol, LDL and TG in psoriatic patients for early screening of hyperlipidemia to evaluate risk to atherosclerosis and vascular obstructive disorders and its complications.

Background Acitretin is a second-generation synthetic retinoid, and is widely used for treating the severe psoriasis vulgaris. However, it should be chosen with caution for its cardiovascular risk, and it is reported that acitretin may increase the serum lipids. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the Frizzled-related proteins 4 (SFRP4) rs1802073 polymorphism and the changes of serum lipids in Chinese psoriatic patients during the treatment with acitretin. Methods In our study, 100 psoriatic patients were recruited systematically treated with acitretin (30 mg/day) for at least eight weeks. Data of the patients’ demographic and clinical characteristics and the results of serum triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were collected pre- and post-treatment. Results A total of 84 psoriatic patients were enrolled and divided into three groups by SFRP4 rs1802073 genotypes. The patients who carried with TT genotype had maintained levels of TG and LDL-C after acitretin treatment, while patients with GG/GT genotypes had significantly elevated levels of serum TG and LDL-C compared to the TT genotype (ΔTG%: 27.53 ± 59.13 vs −1.47 ± 37.79, p = 0.026, ΔLDL-C%: 10.62 ± 26.57 vs −1.29 ± 17.07, p = 0.042). The association of rs1802073 with TG and LDL-C profiles remained significant after adjusting for age, gender, and body mass index. Although without significance, the pre-post change in serum level of TC across rs1802073 GG/GT genotypes demonstrated a trend similar to TG and LDL, and the serum level of HDL-C demonstrated a trend opposite to TG, TC and LDL. Conclusions Our results demonstrated that SFRP4 rs1802073 polymorphism was found to be associated with elevated serum lipid levels after acitretin treatment, and it may serve as a genetic marker of safe and precise treatment for individual psoriatic patients.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the major and common metabolic, and chronic disorders in the world. Several medicinal plants have been used globally for the management of diabetes mellitus. The current study aimed to study the anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic effects of Bersama abyssinica. Methods: Antidiabetic effect of 80% methanolic crude extract of Bersama abyssinica was studied in repeated dose-treated STZ-induced diabetic mice model. The activities of Bersama abyssinica on serum lipid level and body weight were investigated on STZ-induced diabetic mice. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and significant when the p-value was less than 0.05. Results: All doses of the crude 80% methanolic extract of Bersama abyssinica (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg) exhibited a noticeable BGL reduction when compared with baseline blood glucose level and diabetic control on the 7th and 14th days of administration. Moreover, the higher dose of the extract (at 400 mg/kg) significantly (p < 0.001, 54.3%) decreased the BGL in STZ-induced diabetic mice. The maximum decrement in fasting BGL was achieved at the 14th days: 34.92%, 41.10%, 54.30%, and 59.66%, respectively for BAC 100 mg/kg, BAC 200 mg/kg, BAC 400 mg/kg, and GLC 5 mg/kg treated groups. Bersama abyssinica also displayed a significant (p < 0.05) improvement of serum lipid levels and body weight. Conclusion: Bersama abyssinica crude extract exhibited a significant antidiabetic effect and prevented body weight loss in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. The finding also confirmed the valuable biochemical activity of Bersama abyssinica by improving serum lipid levels.
