Effect of Concept Mapping on Secondary School Students’ Achievement and Retention in Physics in Enugu State.

This study sought to determine the effect ofconcept mapping on secondary school students‟ achievement and retention in physics. Four research questions and six hypotheses guided the study. Pretest-posttest non randomized control group design was adopted for the study. The study was conducted in Agbani education zone of Enugu State, where a sample of one hundred and fifty-six (156) senior secondary school one (SSS 1) students was drawn from four intact classes. Technique adopted for sampling was purposive multistage stratified random sampling. Instrument used for data collection was Physics Achievement Test (PAT). The instrument was constructed by the researcher and validated by three research experts. PAT yielded a stability coefficient of .71 obtained through test –retest approach. PAT also yielded a reliability coefficient of .65 obtained by Kudar-Richardson 20 formula. Research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation. Hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Major findings of the study showed that the experimental group achieved higher and retained more physics than their counterparts in the control group. Also male and female students did not differ significantly in their achievement and retention in physics. It was recommended that concept mapping be used in teaching secondary school physics.

<span>This study investigated the comparative effectiveness of pedagogical pattern of running a course and talk-chalk methods on senior secondary school students’ achievement in waves. It is triggered by reports of persistent students’ low achievement in physics contributed largely by students’ poor performance in waves-related items. It adopted the quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. Three research questions and hypotheses guided the study. There were 216 students who participated in the study. Physics Achievement Test (PAT) containing 50 multiple-choice researcher-developed items were used as instrument for data collection. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while ANCOVA was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Results showed that: the pedagogical pattern of running a course method was superior method in fostering students’ achievement in waves; female students achieved higher than male students using pedagogical pattern of running a course strategy to teach waves; and there was no significant interaction effect of teaching methods and gender on students’ achievement in waves. From the findings, it was recommended that the pedagogical pattern of running a course strategy should be used in teaching physics in secondary school education system and in training of teachers.</span>

The study examined the Effect of Self-monitoring and Management Strategy on Violent Behaviour among senior secondary School Students. It was guided by two research questions and two hypotheses. A non-equivalent control group Quasi-experimental design involving one treatment and one control group was adopted. A total of 43 senior secondary schools (SSII) classes with high record of Behavioural problems in School within Bida Educational Zone o f Niger State were used for r the study. The instrument used for the study was the Adolescent Behavioural Assessment (ABA) which was validated by experts and used for data collection. Mean, Standard deviation and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the data collected. The results suggested that the use of self-monitoring and management strategy are efficacious in reducing violent behaviours in schools. Based on the findings, the introduction of peace education in schools to curb the effect of violent behaviour on academic and social development and school psychologist or counsellors’ training on the new strategies to reduce violent behaviour in school are among the recommendations proposed by this study.

Abstract Introduction: The manner in which a child would cope with dying and death situation would be determined by what the child already know and what knowledge concerning thanatology the child had been exposed to previously. This study was concluded to determine the effect of thanatology intervention programme on knowledge and attitude of secondary school students in Anambra State Nigeria. Method: The study was delimited to Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Quasi-experimental pre-test, post-test control group design was used on 282 junior and senior secondary school students selected from four secondary schools which included two private schools and two public schools and they were divided into control and experimental groups. The research instrument was a researcher-developed instrument on knowledge and attitude towards thanatology. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer research questions. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to answer the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Results: The results of the study revealed that there was an increasein the knowledge and attitude of secondary school students after the thanatology intervention programme. Conclusion: Based on the various findings of the study, it was concluded that thanatology has great effect on the students’ knowledge and attitude. Furthermore, it is recommended that thanatology should be taught both informally and formally to help remove or control the fear of dying and death in them.

The study investigated the effects of jigsaw iv cooperative learning strategy (J4CLS) on secondary school students’ achievement in Physics in Jos metropolis, Nigeria. It employed the quasi-experimental research design of the non-equivalent control group pre-test, post-test type. One hundred and forty-five (145) senior secondary two (SS II) students from four co-educational secondary schools were used as samples for the study. A 50-item multiple-choice instrument called Heat Energy Achievement Test (HEAT) was used to test students on the concepts of heat energy measurements. The internal consistency of HEAT was estimated at 0.83, using Kuder-Richardson formula 20 on the SPSS Version 25. Three research questions were raised and answered using mean, while two hypotheses were formulated and tested at α = 0.05 using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Findings revealed, amongst others, that students taught heat energy measurements using J4CLS achieve significantly higher than students taught under conventional lecture method (CLM); those who were taught heat energy measurements using J4CLS achieved high, without gender and school type bias. Based on the findings, recommendations were made which included encouraging physics teachers to employ J4CLS in teaching secondary school students, since the method has been found to enhance students’ achievement in heat energy measurements and it is gender-friendly and independent of school type in terms of improving their achievement in the subject.

Aims: The general purpose of this study is to determine the effect of brainstorming techniques on secondary students study habit. Study Design: The study adopted the quasi-experimental (pre-test-post-test control group) design. Place and Duration of Study: 800 senior secondary school II students from Anambra State and Enugu State of Nigeria, between February 2019 and August 2019. Methodology: This study on effect of brainstorming technique on secondary school students study habit adopted the quasi-experimental research design, more specifically the non-randomized pre-test – post test control group design. Quasi-experimental study is a type of experimental study that determines the effect of a treatment paradigm on a non-randomized sample. The sample for the study was 800 senior secondary schools students (350 male and 450 female). The study habit inventory questionnaire with a reliability index of .897 was used in data collection. Mean and standard deviation was used in answering the research questions while ANOVA was used in testing the null hypothesis. Results: At 0.05 level of significance, the analysis of the data collected revealed a mean gain of 38.13 between the control and experimental groups, and a difference in mean gain of 4.61 for male and female students. This indicates that brainstorming was more effective for the experimental group and further shows that the effect differs with respect to gender. The findings revealed there was no difference in the mean post test scores of students who received treatment using brainstorming technique and those in the control group (p = 0.416, 0.05) also there was a significant difference in the mean post test scores of male and female secondary school students (p=0.026, 0.05). Conclusion: The study concluded that brainstorming technique is effective for improving secondary school students study habit.

The study investigated the effects of chemistry-based puzzles on senior secondary school chemistry students’ interest and gender in chemical periodicity. The design of the study was quasi-experimental; specifically the pre-test, post-test non-equivalent control group design was adopted. A sample of 129 students from a population of 4369 was used in the study. Students were classified into experimental and control groups: Students in the experimental groups were instructed with chemistry-based puzzles while students in the control groups were instructed with the demonstration method. An interest questionnaire called Chemical Periodicity Concepts Interest Inventories (CPCII), constructed by the researchers and validated by experts from three universities in Nigeria, was used in the study. Reliability coefficient of the instrument was calculated and found to be 0.79. Three research questions and three hypotheses were raised in the study. The research questions were answered using Mean and Standard Deviation while hypotheses were tested at 0.05 confidence level using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Findings showed that students in the experimental group who were taught with Puzzle-Based Strategy (PBS) had higher interest in the topic ‘chemical periodicity’ than those in the control group who were taught with the Demonstration Method (DEM). There was no significant difference in the interest of students by gender. Interaction effect of gender and treatments on interest was not significant. It was recommended that teachers should incorporate puzzle-based instructional strategies in their teaching as a variety to curb boredom in the classroom due to monotony of the conventional methods among others.

Social Networking Sites are a type of virtual community which enables many people to interact and share ideas or interests. Social networking is rapidly changing the way the world is doing virtually everything, from the way people access information to the way people communicate and most importantly, the way they interact. This study investigated the relationship between Social Networking Sites and Observational Learning of Senior Secondary School students in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria. Four research questions with the corresponding hypotheses were generated. The objectives of the study centered on investigating the relationship between four social networking sites namely: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube to observational learning. The correlational study design was adopted for the study. Simple random sampling was used to draw a sample of 560 students from the population of the study. The selfdesigned instrument was of two parts: A and B. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to answer the research questions while the hypotheses were subjected to critical probability level of 0.05 alpha levels. Findings to this study revealed that there is a significant positive relationship between social networking sites and observational learning; some of which include enhancement of informative endowment as in the case of Facebook, live-video functionality to stories in the case of Instagram and acquisition of vocational skills from YouTube. The paper at the end recommended that more encouragement should be given to students to enable them benefit adequately and positively from the gains of social networking channels vis-a-vis observational learning.

This study examined the impact of cognitive restructuring and token economy techniques on the reduction of truancy among secondary school students in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study adopted a pre-test, post-test, control group design with a multistage sampling technique as the sampling method. Judgmental sampling technique was used to select two from the six Education Districts in Lagos State, simple random sampling technique was adopted to select six schools; three schools from each of the two Education Districts and 170 truants out of the 216 randomly selected based on the class attendance register completed the study. Truancy Behaviour Questionnaire (TBQ) with a reliability index of .87 was the instrument for the study. Data were analysed and presented with descriptive and ANOVA statistics at .05 level of significance. Findings showed that the two techniques were effective for the reduction of truancy but the token economy technique had a better effect. Sex had no significant effect on the reduction of truancy but females play truants more than males. Based on the findings, the token economy therapy was recommended as an ideal technique for counselling and guiding students against truancy.

This study was developed and conducted to test the effect of cognitive restructuring in the management of mathophobia (that is, Mathematics anxiety) among secondary school students in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. To guide the study, two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated for testing at 0.05 level of significance. In executing the study, the pre-test, post-test, and control group experimental research design was adopted using a randomized sample of 120 SS2 students drawn from three public secondary schools only. The researchers developed an instrument titled “Mathematics Diagnostic Questionnaire” (MDQ) which was adequately assessed for validity and reliability and was used in collecting pre-test and post-test data for the cognitive restructuring and control groups. Data analysis was done using mean, and standard deviation for the research questions, while independent sample and paired sample t-test were used for the hypotheses. The result obtained showed that the cognitive restructuring was significantly effective in the management of mathophobia among secondary school students. There is a slight reduction in the effect of cognitive restructuring during follow-up; there is a statistical significant difference in the mathophobic level of students treated with cognitive restructuring and those in the control group. Based on the major findings, recommendations were made among which is that functional guidance and counselling centers be established at all educational levels and be manned by professional counsellors who are competent in cognitive restructuring techniques to assist those who have mathophobia and other maladaptive behaviours. Suggestions for further study were made.

Test anxiety constitutes a serious academic impediment to lots of students in schools. This study investigated the Effects of Meditation technique on test anxiety among secondary school students in Anambra State, Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Quasi-experimental research was adopted in carrying out the study. A sample size of 101 adolescents was chosen from a population of 475 adolescents in SS2 with test anxiety. The sample was derived from two schools selected using purposive sampling technique based on the number of students that scored high on Test Anxiety Inventory. Data relating to research questions were analysed using statistical Mean while data relating to hypothesis was analysed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Findings from the study revealed among others that though the reduction of secondary school students’ test anxiety after meditation technique differed significantly with that of the conventional counselling group, meditation technique was not effective on secondary school students’ test anxiety. It further revealed that meditation technique reduced the secondary school students’ test anxiety. Based on the findings, implications of the study were noted and recommendations made that since the technique meditation was found not to be effective, but significantly reduced the test anxiety of the participants, the technique should not be used alone by the guidance counsellors in helping clients, especially students in overcoming their test anxiety in schools.
