Background: Every medical student in India have to undergo a compulsory rotatory internship for completion of their course where they encounter various medical emergencies and apply their medical knowledge. An early encounter to a basic life support course and training will increase the efficacy of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and thus the outcome of the patient. This study was designed to test knowledge of MBBS students in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: This observational study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Uttar Pradesh and used a preformed validated questionnaire to test awareness and knowledge of basic life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a sample of 500 MBBS students. Descriptive analysis was performed on the questionnaire responses. All data obtained from the questionnaire was evaluated and statistically analysed using software IBM SPSS Statistics software version 24 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) for MS windows. Results: With a response rate of 47% among 500 MBBS students, the mean score obtained was 2.34±1.066 out of a maximum score of five. A maximum score of 2.804±1.055 obtained by 5th-year students. Surprisingly, first-year students achieved an average score of 2.66±0.97, which was higher than that of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students. 87% of students were like-minded to participate in the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) awareness program. Only 45% of students correctly answered the order of CPR as C-A-B (chest compression-airway-breathing).Conclusions: The study showed that though the awareness and importance of basic life support (BLS) are high among the medical students, the accurate knowledge required in performing BLS is inadequate. This study also showed that the National medical commission has taken a positive step in the incorporation of BLS in the curriculum.

Objectives: IABP is the most frequently used assist device in cardiac surgery. However, due to the poor socioeconomic status in our country, it is not always possible to use a brand new IABP when required. In these circumstances we use re-sterilized IABP catheters. Our aim was to compare the outcome of re-sterilized versus new IABP catheters in the set of patients who were provided surgery for IHD free of cost in a tertiary care hospital. Study Design: Retrospective study. Period: January 2007 to December 2013. Setting: National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: 3560 CABG procedures were performed. Those patients who could not afford a new IABP catheter were provided with the resterilized balloon catheters, free of cost. Total IABP usage was 286(8%) patients, of which the new balloon catheter was used in 214patients [74.8% (groupI)]. Re-sterilized catheters were used in 72patients [25.2% (groupII)]. All patients were screened for HIV, Hepatitis- B and Hepatitis-C.12(16.6%) of the balloon catheters were resterilized more than once and 3(4.1%) of these on three occasions. Results: The mean age of the patients was 52.59±13.32 years. 69 (24.1%) of the patients were female. The mode of insertion (sheath less versus with sheath) was found tobe an independent risk factor for the development of complications. The overall incidence of complications (p=0.29) was 6.9%. The incidence of balloon catheter related complications was 1.75%. When the two groups were compared with regard to morbidity and mortality, the resultswere found to be statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Use of re-sterilized IABP catheters is safe. However, strict guidelines should be instituted and followed for this purpose.

Introduction:Glaucoma is a chroniccondition and if not properly controlled will lead to blindness. So it is very important that patients on treatment for glaucoma should know about the course and outcome of the disease. Many patients stop the treatment because of treatment cost and also due to the prolonged treatment duration. Objectives: To find out the current level of knowledge of their disease among glaucoma patients attending a tertiary care hospital in south India. Methods: It was a cross sectional hospital-based study.Study participants included already diagnosed patients attending glaucoma clinic. A structured validated pretested questionnaire was given to collect data. The questionnaire was given to 320 patients attending glaucoma clinic during their routine visit. Grading was done based on the percentage of questions answered. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 18; (SPSS Inc; Chicago, IL)Results:The mean age was 59.34 ± 8. 86years.Femaleswere more aware compared to males. Only 40% (108) of patients knew that glaucoma can cause blindness. Socioeconomic factors had significant association only with awareness of the disease.Educational status had significant association with awareness about the disease as well as the treatment received. Disease duration did not have any significant association with awareness about glaucoma. Conclusion:Determinants of knowledge about glaucoma in this study were female gender, higher socioeconomic status and higher educational levels. Even glaucoma patients who are on treatment for glaucoma did not have sufficient knowledge about their disease.
