A discussion of the city’s relation to study abroad provides an opportunity to insert a theoretical element into the pedagogy of the profession. This article presents an essay that first introduces the Foucauldian concepts of “genealogy” and “heterotopia” to the idea of the “city,” and in turn applies the same terms to the place of the city in the study abroad experience. Then, turning from Michel Foucault as “philosopher of space” to Paul Virilio, “philosopher of time,” the article demonstrates the interplay between Foucault’s heterotopia and Virilio’s “anti-city,” showing how study abroad in the contemporary, globalized city requires distinct programmatic changes to the (s)pace of education abroad.

This Special Issue continues this journal’s practice of focusing on themes that help to advance our understanding and approach to education abroad program design and oversight. The insights provided by the authors featured in this volume challenge us to consider the meaning and import of the city as a study abroad landscape. This simple notion has yielded creative and thought provoking ideas that should inspire those who design and lead education abroad programs. Betsy Brewer, one of the guest editors, approached the Frontiers editorial board with the idea for this volume. The board was very receptive to her proposal and asked Mike Monahan, one of the founding editors of Frontiers, to serve as a co-guest editor. Betsy and Mike worked together to organize a call for articles, which yielded an excellent response. The articles that they chose for this volume present a variety of innovative approaches to study abroad and the city, and cover a range of geographic locations. I and the editorial board thank Betsy and Mike for their outstanding work in overseeing this volume. Besides the tremendous ongoing support of the institutional sponsors of Frontiers, this Special Issue has also received additional support from IFSA Butler, without which this publication would not have been possible. I and the editorial board thank our good colleagues at IFSA Butler for their commitment to bringing this high-quality research and writing about study abroad to the field. As destination of choice for many short-term study abroad programs, Berlin offers students of German language, culture and history a number of sites richly layered with significance. The complexities of these sites and the competing narratives that surround them are difficult for students to grasp in a condensed period of time. Using approaches from the spatial humanities, this article offers a case study for enhancing student learning through the creation of digital maps and itineraries in a campus-based course for subsequent use during a three-week program in Berlin. In particular, the concept of deep mapping is discussed as a means of augmenting understanding of the city and its history from a narrative across time to a narrative across the physical space of the city. As itineraries, these course-based projects were replicated on site. In moving from the digital environment to the urban landscape, this article concludes by noting meanings uncovered and narratives formed as we moved through the physical space of the city.

ResumoEste artigo tem por objetivo identificar e analisar práticas matemáticas inscritas em cadernos escolares de uma escola mista estadual do município de Antônio Carlos (SC), nas décadas de 1930 e 1940, com enfoque dado para as frações. São utilizadas as teorizações de Michel Foucault para nortear os preceitos teórico-metodológicos. Os resultados da pesquisa indicam práticas matemáticas desenvolvidas nessa escola obedecendo aos programas oficiais catarinenses da época, com soluções rápidas e sucintas e voltadas às tarefas de seu cotidiano. Também se observam que elas estão inseridas num contexto histórico, compreendido entre a Reforma Francisco Campos, de 1931, e o início do Movimento da Matemática Moderna, nos anos de 1960, no qual a fração recebe uma nova abordagem, distanciando-se da relação entre número e medida e aproximando-se da noção de parte-todo.Palavras-chave: Práticas matemáticas, Cadernos escolares, Frações, História da educação matemática.AbstractThis article aims to identify and analyze mathematical practices registered in school notebooks of a mixed state school in the city of Antônio Carlos (SC), in the 1930s and 1940s, focused on fractions. Michel Foucault's theorizations are used to guide theoretical and methodological precepts. The results of the research show mathematical practices developed in these schools obeying the Santa Catarina official programs of the time, with quick and succinct solutions and focused on their daily tasks. It is also observed that they are inserted in a historical context, between the Francisco Campos Reform, of 1931, and the beginning of the Modern Mathematics Movement, in the 1960s, in which the fraction receives a new approach, moving away from the relationship between number and measure and approaching the notion of part-whole.Keywords: Mathematical practices, School notebooks, Fractions, History of mathematics education.ResumenEste artículo tiene como objetivo identificar y analizar las prácticas matemáticas registradas en los cuadernos escolares de una escuela estatal mixta en la ciudad de Antônio Carlos (SC), en la década de 1930 y 1940, con un enfoque en las fracciones. Los resultados de la investigación muestran prácticas matemáticas desarrolladas en estas escuelas que obedecen los programas oficiales de Santa Catarina de la época, con soluciones rápidas y sucintas y centradas en sus tareas diarias. The object of this discussion is to explore some of the ways in which Europe has been created and recreated in the American mind and to relate those constructs to the limitations, opportunities and dynamics that may be explored in education abroad. Those constructs represent in part the baggage that students bring with them. In what follows, the structure will recreate the experience of students coming to Europe. The essay explores the baggage they carry; engagement with the European environment and, finally, the process of return. In that structure, which mirrors the experience of the study abroad student, a partial but suggestive set of perspectives emerge that go further than defending the traditional and, instead, present a cogent set of rich realities that collectively create the case for Europe.

This chapter is a descriptive case study on one community college in California to show how the institution was able to successfully institutionalize study abroad through advocacy, strategic planning, and the cultivation of local, statewide, and international collaborations. Because of the longevity and vitality of the program examined in this particular case study, there is useful insight for other education abroad professionals who are at varying stages of implementing, developing, or institutionalizing study abroad programs at their respective institutions.

Combination of study undertaken in the native settings, combined with abroad studies, creates better environment for acquiring holistic perspectives. This is truer for management programs due to globalized business environment. Consequently, thousands depart annually for education abroad experiences with the expectation that they will become better professionals and return home with significantly enhanced/advanced competencies and skills. However, learning in a foreign milieu may not always be superior to learning at home. Indeed, the extent to which the study abroad programs aid in becoming successful is dependent on a vast number of variables. Hence, the objective of this chapter is to have a clearer understanding of how study abroad programs function in the development of students' professional competencies. Adopting a case-based approach, the focus is on Omani students' experiences related to management programs. It also aims to provide strategies to enhance the returns from study abroad management programs in general and especially for students of Oman.

Revisiting Foucault's month-long stay in Toronto in June 1982, this article explores the reception and appropriation of the first volume of The History of Sexuality by activist-intellectuals associated with the Toronto-based publication, The Body Politic, and some of their fellow travelers. Reading Foucault's introductory volume through the intersecting frameworks of social constructionism, historical materialism, and socialist feminism, gay-left activists forged a distinctive relationship between sexual theory and political practice. If Foucault had a significant impact on activists in the city, Toronto also left its mark on Foucault. Based on the recently rediscovered and unedited transcript of a well-known interview with Foucault in Toronto, along with an interview with one of Foucault's interlocutors, the article concludes with Foucault's forays into Toronto's sexual and political scenes, particularly in relation to ‘bodies and pleasures’ and resistance to the sex police.

This article proposes a model to devise the most effective policies at the institutional level to expand education abroad participation. The paper advances the understanding of the determinants of study abroad in two important ways. First, it shows that going beyond descriptive statistics and simple correlations and using multivariate analysis allows one to isolate the factors that are statistically most important in the study abroad context of a particular institution. Second, the analysis identifies parent and faculty encouragement as key determinants of a student’s study abroad decision.

This article focuses on one piece from the complex puzzle of internationalization, namely the intercultural learning during education abroad. It departs from a critical reflection on American student applications for the Fulbright program and uses the application process for Fulbright scholarship as a lynchpin for other study abroad scholarships for American students. It shows how the stages of before, during and after education abroad can be comprehensively integrated into a holistic process of student development in American universities. This process has the ultimate goal of helping American students function in an international context and redefining their world view to encompass the notion that cultures can be understood relative to one another.

Desde los atentados del 11-S, los aeropuertos se han convertido en unos dispositivos de control y vigilancia únicamente comparables con las cárceles de máxima seguridad. Por ello, la mayor parte de los estudios dedicados a los mismos han experimentado una progresiva afinidad con los trabajos de Michel Foucault y Paul Virilio, en los que la arquitectura es caracterizada como técnica paradigmática para organizar el espacio (compartimentación) y el tiempo (distribución de secuencias) con el fin de lograr la individualización, clasificación, ordenación y normalización de sus usuarios. Este artículo tiene por objetivo identificar las principales estrategias espaciales mediante las cuales los aeropuertos implementan el control disciplinar de los pasajeros, con independencia de su estilo formalcompositivo, su estética sociofenomenológica y/o la introducción de dispositivos electrónicos de vigilancia. Para ello, desarrollamos una metodología basada en el análisis gráfico (en planta y sección) de cinco aeropuertos de pequeño tamaño proyectados en un mismo ámbito territorial (estatal) y en un lapso homogéneo con el doble objetivo de que no haya cambios sustanciales en la legislación aplicable ni en el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías de edificación, control y vigilancia que puedan afectar al diseño básico de su organización espacial. Los resultados obtenidos muestran la presencia constante de una organización espacial lineal y jerárquica consistente en la sucesión “entrada-facturación-control de personas-shopping-embarque” con independencia de cualquier otra posible consideración estética, fenomenológica o social del espacio diseñado. Ello se opone a aquellos análisis realizados en las dos últimas décadas que priman el carácter rizomático, conectivo y no-jerarquizado del espacio aeroportuario frente a su segmentarización y jerarquización disciplinar. El artículo concluye remarcando el carácter totalitario que ha adquirido el control de la movilidad (aérea) en el siglo XXI.
