Objective: To verify whether what users of soup kitchens in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, think about a healthy diet and the challenges they face to eat healthy are associated with their household food security status. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1,656 users of soup kitchens in Belo Horizonte. Socioeconomic and household food security data, and healthy-eating discourses were collected by a semi-structured questionnaire. The data were submitted to descriptive analyses for constructing frequency distribution tables, and to univariate analysis. Discourse analysis was based on the social representation theory. Results: To cut, reduce, avoid, not eat, eat less, and decrease carbohydrates, salt, meats, various beverages, and other foods are the most frequent changes (71.4%) that food-secure users have made or intend to make. Food-insecure users intended to eat more fruits, non-starchy vegetables, and other foods (34.4%). The main obstacles food-secure and food-insecure users face to adopt a healthier diet are lack of time (82.9%) and low income (53.5%), respectively (p<0.001). Conclusion: What users of soup kitchens in Belo Horizonte think about food and the obstacles they face to adopt a healthier diet are related to their household food security status. The results provide valuable data for effective proposals of food and nutrition education, which should act on the producers of subjectivity in this group and consider this group's food and nutrition security status.

ABSTRACT To trace the course of building a pictorial instrument that explores semiotic resources about food and nutrition education. The instrument is directed at the treatment and prevention of obesity, considering the food and nutrition problems of the Brazilian population. The criteria for photo production were: images that could cause visual impact and transmit applied nutrition information, insinuating positive and negative eating practices for promoting healthy eating, and preventing and treating obesity. Themes were created to guide photo production, and preparations, food composition tables, and food labels were used for composing the images. Focus groups were conducted with nonobese and obese women, and dietitians to evaluate image comprehension. The pictorial instrument totaled to 20 photos, with 5 photos in each of the following themes: 'Sweet life, being aware of sugar', about sugar content in sweets and drinks; 'Tasty food with little fat', about fat content in foods; 'Eating well by making the best choices', about food replacements; and 'I take care of myself by eating healthy food, about encouraging fruit and vegetable intakes. The photos contain food, meals, and semiotic resources. The pictorial instrument describes four relevant themes to approach food problems in the Brazilian population. It can easily be used for both preventing and treating obesity, and for promoting healthy eating.

AbstractObjectiveA school environment that encourages students to opt for food with sound nutritional value is both essential and formative in ensuring that young people adopt healthy eating habits. The present study explored the associations between the socio-economic characteristics of the school environment and the school food environment.DesignA cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2008–2009. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed on data from public primary and secondary schools.SettingQuebec, Canada. The school food offering was observed directly and systematically by trained research assistants. Interviews were conducted to fully describe food offerings in the schools and schools’ child-care services.SubjectsA two-stage stratified sampling was used to build a representative sample of 143 French-speaking public schools. The response rate was 66·2 %.ResultsThe primary and secondary schools in low-density areas were more likely to be located near diners (primary:P=0·018; secondary:P=0·007). The secondary schools in deprived areas were less likely to have a regular food committee (P=0·004), to seek student input on menu choices (P=0·001) or to have a long lunch period (P=0·010). The primary schools in deprived areas were less likely to have a food service (P=0·025) and their meal periods were shorter (P=0·033).ConclusionsThe schools in areas with lower socio-economic status provided an environment less favourable for a healthy diet. From a public health perspective, the results of this analysis could assist policy makers and managers to identify actions to support the creation of favourable school environments.

ABSTRACT Based on a qualitative case study on the Educom.Cine extension program, which promoted audiovisual production in elementary education, we reflected on the possibility of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) becoming the backbone of a more attentive curriculum to the processes of integration of school with its locality. In this perspective, school would become the center of management of several community communication channels, where school production would be linked and publicized to the whole community. This would be part of a proposal to integrate the use of ICT in school environment with its non-formal use, stimulating the students to act in the local (neighborhood) considering also the global, in a glocal perspective. The present text is part of a thesis developed in the Graduate Program in Education of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) that aimed to analyze the extent to which the Fundeb constituted a public policy capable of adequately financing the expansion of attendance to education in the municipality of João Pessoa, PB. It is a qualitative bibliographical research aimed at problematizing the human capital paradigm applied to early childhood and understood as capacity development that prepares children for adult life, for the market and for generating economic value of individuals and for a country. It has been found that child care, education and development have been considered as a solution to social problems and to sustainable economic development since it generates significant economic returns and eliminates inequality. However, assumptions, orientations and programs directed towards childhood are developed through assistance and compensatory proposals for developing countries with a focus on alleviating poverty. Therefore, it is common to find in these countries institutions with inadequate infrastructure, low-skilled professionals and family-focused models of care. This project focuses on the theme of healthy eating habits and is being developed by students from class 8.ºD and under the scope of our school’s social inclusion program. Two questionnaires were applied, one on food and the other on hydration in a school environment, to all classes in the 7th grade and class 8.ºD. In order to alert the school community to the needfor good hydration, the class 8.ºD organized a tasting session on flavoured water. In collaboration with the project, the nurse from the school health centre gave two lectures on healthy eating habits. Schools’ shutdown due to Covid-19 pandemic did not allow more sessions to be held, nor to share with the community the questionnaires’ results. Nevertheless, one of the projects main goals is to implement in the school flavoured water dispensers, to encourage students to drink more water.

The aging population worldwide is expected to increase the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease. As there is no medical curative treatment for this disease to date, alternative treatments have been applied to improve the patient’s brain and general health. One of these efforts includes providing Alzheimer’s patients with proper food and nutrition. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-powered personalized virtual coach to provide diet and nutrition assistance to patients of Alzheimer’s and/or their informal caregivers. The virtual coach is built on top of an ontology-enhanced knowledge base containing knowledge about patients, Alzheimer’s disease, food, and nutrition. Semantics-based searching and reasoning are performed on the knowledgebase to get personalized context-aware recommendation and education about healthy eating for Alzheimer’s patients. The proposed system has been implemented as a mobile application. Evaluation based on use cases has demonstrated the usefulness of this tool.

Abstract. The aim of this study is to describe the profile of the motivation to learn in students of Elementary and Secondary Education diagnosed as gifted, and to compare it with the profile of students of normal capacity. Despite that gifted students are considered the most skilled for study and homework, they suffer a high rate of low achievement in school. To explore a possible intervention, motivational variables have been chosen to study, as they are widely related to school success in the literature, and have been shown subject to change with proper interventions. This has been studied in a sample of 36 students (18 diagnosed as gifted and 18 of normal capacity) both Elementary Education and Secondary Education, analyzing their motivation through motivational part of the Learning Strategies Questionnaire and Motivation (CEAM) Ayala, Martinez and Yuste (2004), the 60 items measure the Value of learning, Intrinsic Motivation, Teamwork value, External Motivation, the feeling of Self-efficacy and an Internal Attribution of success. The questionnaire was collectively applied to all students in the classroom, then they were selected those diagnosed as gifted, and 18 pairs of the same characteristics with normal capacity to form the comparison group. Results appear consistent with previous scientific research. Gifted students, as a group, gave greater value to learning and had greater feeling of self-efficacy in the school environment that students of normal capacity, there are no major differences between the two groups of students about other motivational determinants.Key words: Gifted, Talented, motivation, motivational profile, low achievementResumen.
