The world is waking up to a new reality where an invisible enemy has made human contact contagious and exposed the long-hidden fault line of verisimilitude, blurring the lines between reality and paranoia. The global reaction is unprecedented with world economy virtually at a standstill. The economic fallout of the outbreak could trigger a recession of unparalleled scale. But is economics the only challenge? The pandemic is attacking societies at their core. The author of Sapiens, Yuval Noah Harari puts it well when he writes “The biggest danger is not the virus itself. Humanity has all the scientific knowledge and technological tools to overcome the virus. The really big problem is our own inner demons, our own hatred, greed and ignorance”

Subject Prospects for the global economy in 2017. Significance The IMF, the OECD and the World Bank see the world economy growing by about 3.0% next year, little changed from its 2012-16 average growth but down from the 5.1% average achieved during 2003-07. Factors influencing the outlook include weak trade and poor productivity along with high debt levels and policy limitations: these feed into each other, creating a downward spiral of growth expectations. Nonetheless, many economies are well placed to cope with this 'new normal'.

At present Russia faces the task of great importance - effective integration into the world economy. The success of this process largely depends on the strength of the domestic economy and stable economic growth. To attain such a goal certain changes in economic approaches are required which imply more active, focused and concerted steps in the monetary, fiscal and foreign exchange policy.
