Purpose – Drawing on social identity and self-categorization theories and building on Meyer and Herscovitch's (2001) work on affective commitment, this study aimed to examine the relationship between organizational identification and affective commitment, and the relationships between these two variables and employees' attitude and behavior. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected on-site from 158 automobile dealership employees in central China. Regression analysis and hierarchical linear modeling were used to analyze the survey data. Findings – Organizational identification was positively related to affective commitment. Affective commitment was negatively related to turnover intention and positively related to job performance. Affective commitment mediated the relationship between organizational identification and turnover intention, but did not mediate the relationship between organizational identification and job performance. Research limitations/implications – This study contributes to the literature by integrating organizational identification and affective commitment, the two distinct types of employees' organizational attachment. However, results should be cautioned with the limitations of the study. Practical implications – Managers can use employees' organizational identification to foster affective commitment since it leads to a variety of positive work attitudes and behavior. Social implications – Society as a whole may benefit by having more loyal and committed workforce in organisations. Originality/value – This study develops a model that aligns employee commitment and identification. Doing so answers the call for more efforts to integrate the two forms of organizational attachment in order to make more progress in this line of research.

Purpose This paper aims to provide an alternative explanation for how organizations could increase levels of organizational identification, in turn reducing employee turnover intention. Specifically, the study empirically tests the joint effect of two types of organizational resources – structural empowerment and serving culture (SE*SC) – on employee identification. Moreover, it investigates the mediating effect of organizational identification on the relationship between the joint effect (SE*SC) and turnover intention. Design/methodology/approach The data were collected in 2018 from employees working in a higher education institution located in the USA. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed model. Findings Statistical analysis reveals the positive joint effect (SE*SC) on organizational identification and the mediating effect of identification on the relationship between the joint effect (SE*SC) and turnover intention. Originality/value This study contributes to past research by revealing a new important mechanism. Business organizations could increase levels of employee identification and, in turn, reduce turnover by providing empowering resources that allow employees to successfully complete their jobs. Moreover, the study also contributes to practice by providing some recommendations that managers may implement to improve internal effectiveness in their respective organizations.


The purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between the organizational identification of the employees in hotel establishments and travel agencies and their turnover intention. The research data were obtained from 275 participants working in hotels and travel agencies in Antalya. The data were analysed through descriptive analyses, and correlation and regression analyses. As a result of the analyses, it was found that there was a significant and negative relationship between the perceptions of the employees about the organizational identification and their turnover intention. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the organizational identification of the employees affected their turnover intention at a level of 5%.

Purpose To deepen our understanding about the development of turnover intention, the purpose of this paper is to develop a model that explains how ethical climate influences turnover intention based on the ethical climate theory and social identity theory. Design/methodology/approach The hypotheses of this study were statistically tested using a survey of working professionals from Taiwan’s high-tech industry. Of the 400 questionnaires distributed to the working professionals from five large high-tech firms in a well-known science park in Northern Taiwan, 352 usable questionnaires were returned for a questionnaire response rate of 88 percent. Findings The test results of this study first show that all three dimensions of ethical climate (i.e. instrumental, benevolent, and principled) are indirectly related to turnover intention via the mediation of firm attractiveness. Moreover, instrumental and benevolent climate directly relate to turnover intention, whereas benevolent climate negatively moderates the relationship between principled climate and firm attractiveness. Originality/value This study finds that benevolent climate plays a dual role as an antecedent and a moderator in the formation of turnover intention, complementing prior studies that merely concentrate on the single role of benevolent climate as either an antecedent or a moderator. The effect of principled climate on organizational identification complements the theoretical discussion by Victor and Cullen (1987) about deontology in which an ethical workplace climate (such as legitimacy) drives employees to invest in identity attachments to the organization and influences their future career decision (e.g. turnover).

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the relationships between job satisfaction, organizational commitment and turnover intention of information technology (IT) personnel.Design/methodology/approach3,844 studies which are published between 1998 and 2019 are screened on ScienceDirect, Scopus and ProQuest databases. 10,523 subjects formed the first data set regarding the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention, 7,903 subjects formed the second data set regarding the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention, 843 subjects formed the third data set regarding the relationship between empowerment and turnover intention, and 3,430 subjects formed the fourth data set regarding the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment.FindingsResults showed that the effect size of the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment is the strongest (r = 0.59). The effect size of the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention (r = −0.50), and the effect size of the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention r = −0.51) were also large. But the effect size of the relationship between empowerment and turnover intention was medium (r = −0.34).Originality/valueThis study is rare, and it can be used by the managers working in the IT industry.

As a bottom-up leadership style, humble leadership has attracted increasing attention from scholars in recent years. But its effectiveness and mechanism still lack rigorous empirical study. In this study, we investigate the mechanism and boundary condition by which humble leader behavior exerts influence on followers’ turnover intention. Two-wave data collected from 249 scientific and technological personnel in China supported our hypothesized model. We found that humble leader behavior is significantly negatively related to follower turnover intention. The relationship is further partially mediated by organizational identification, and moderated by leader expertise. Implications for theory, practice and future research are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this study is expected to reveal the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention in the tourism and hospitality literature with more generalizable results, and thus, provide researchers with a new perspective for future studies. In this context, Individual studies that examined the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention in the tourism and hospitality industry were systematically identified by a comprehensive literature review. Design/methodology/approach Individual studies were synthesized and analyzed via a meta-analysis method to reveal whether any relationship exists between organizational commitment and turnover intention and to estimate the direction and intensity of the relationship in a more reliable and comprehensive manner. The analyses were carried out on 13 scientific papers that met the inclusion criteria. Findings Results showed that a moderate negative relationship exists between organizational commitment and turnover intention of employees in the tourism and hospitality industry. In this context, individuals who have emotional commitments to their institutions will have lower turnover intentions than others. The right personal selection, performance evaluation techniques, promotion, training and development opportunities, career opportunities and talent management and functional virtues such as strong communication, trust and justice will not only reinforce organizational commitment but also attract talented individuals to an organization and ensure employee retention. Originality/value In the current study, individual studies focusing on the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover were cumulatively collected, synthesized and analyzed. By way of providing a review of individual studies, the study provides cumulative and reliable evidence to the literature regarding the relationship between organizational commitment and turnover, and hence, contributes to the further progression of the field. The study is also the first meta-analysis carried out on the subject in question.

Drawing on a sample of 212 supervisor-subordinate dyads from 3 branches of an air transportation group in the People's Republic of China, we examined the mediating effect of organizational identification on the relationship between perceived procedural justice and work outcomes, including extrarole behavior and turnover intention. Results showed that organizational identification fully mediated the relationship between procedural justice and extrarole behavior as well as that between procedural justice and turnover intention. Implications for future research and limitations of the present findings are discussed.

Incivility has been identified as a prevalent and crucial issue in workplaces and one that may be associated with detrimental effects on employees and organizational outcomes, such as turnover intention. Many studies have been published regarding the effects of incivility, but there is a lack of integrative reviews and meta-analyses. The aim of the present study is to conduct an early meta-analysis of the relationship between employees’ perceptions of workplace incivility and their turnover intentions. Six databases, including ISI Web of Science, PsychInfo, Scopus, Emerald, Hospitality & Tourism Complete, and Soc Index, were searched to identify empirical articles for this meta-analytical paper. The results of statistical meta-analyses and meta-regression suggest that there is a positive relationship between perceived incivility and turnover intentions in employees and that relationship is consistent across different sources of workplace incivility. However, we did observe a possible interaction effect of “supervisor” and “coworker incivility”. The results also suggest that the relationship between workplace incivility and turnover intention is stronger in the academic sector than in other industries and stronger in the United States than in other countries.
