This paper investigates the effects of COVID-19 pandemic-related uncertainty focusing on the US tourism subsectors, including airlines, hotels, restaurants, and travel companies. Using daily stock price data, we compute connectedness indices that quantify the financial distress in the tourism and hospitality industry and link these indices with a measure of COVID-19-induced uncertainty. Our empirical results show that some subsectors of tourism are affected more than others. The connectedness of tourism companies has severely increased after March 2020. Restaurants are the most heavily influenced subsectors of tourism, while airline companies come the next. Besides, our quantile regression suggests that higher quantile COVID-19 uncertainty index has more effect on the connectedness of tourism companies. Our results guide the policymakers and investors to detect the stress accumulated in each subsectors of tourism and to take more informed and timely decisions.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the world's most serious human calamity in 2020, and it has wreaked havoc on India's economy. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on India's economy in a variety of ways. The impact of COVID-19 on one of the most vital sectors, tourism, has been exceedingly distressing and has resulted in significant losses. As a developing economy, India was already in a precarious position before COVID-19. India's sudden nationwide lockdown was the world's largest. The four stages of continuous countrywide lockdown, which lasted more than two months, had a tremendous impact on India's tourism economy. The Indian travel and tourism sector contributed 6.8% of India's GDP in 2019 and generated 39,821 million jobs, or about 8.0 percent of total employment. The Indian tourism and hospitality industry is now forecasting a job loss of 38 million people. The Indian government has taken significant steps to resurrect the tourism industry. The Indian travel and tourist industry has begun to set general safety and hygienic standards for hosting and serving clients, as well as attempting to restore people's faith in travelling again following the corona outbreak.

Abstract In the current pandemic context, tourists increasingly need to receive assurances from the tourism and hospitality industry that their safety and health will not be endangered during their trip or their stay. Tourists increasingly prefer to plan their own trips and information technology is playing a very important role in the hotel and tourism industry. This study uses strategic management methods and comparative analysis to formulate strategies, measures, and solutions to maintain the safety and the health of tourists at the level of the tourism and hospitality industry. The aim of the paper is to provide solutions for the tourism industry in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, through a strategic managerial approach and by involving information technology and global distribution systems (GDSs) as a decision supporting tool. The results of the study are useful for small and medium enterprises to act efficiently in this pandemic context, but are also useful for GDS providers to reflect on possible improvements in system functionality to implement solutions and to support the decisions of tourists.

The contagious virus (COVID-19) has severely affected the tourism and hospitality industry all over the world, including Bangladesh. It has affected both inbound and outbound tourism of the country. All kinds of tourism firms like hotels, motels, resorts, and transportations have been closed down. Many people have become jobless. The objective of the study includes the challenges that the tourism and hospitality industry will face after the COVID pandemic. Two-phased data collection methods are utilized to achieve their search aim. Primarily, ten variables are identified to measure post-COVID challenges to tourism based on available literature and informal qualitative interviews. Later, a questionnaire is developed for conducting a formal survey to identify post-COVID challenges. Based on empirical findings, this study has identified some post-COVID tourism challenges such as managing health security, dealing with congestions, charging higher prices for securing health safety, managing skilled employees, and arranging developed tourism management technologies. The study further finds that challenges may remain for the industry even after the pandemic. In order to mitigate the post-COVID challenges, it offers a few suggestions such as understanding the new needs of tourists after the pandemic, developing an information system for satisfying the requirements of new-normal situations, and building awareness to tourism stakeholders.

The purpose of this study was to explore students’ perceptions of tourism and hospitality career education in three universities that run undergraduate programmes in Ghana, namely: the University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and the University for Development Studies (UDS). Final year students totaling 128 students were contacted through questionnaire and results analyzed employing SPSS. The study revealed that 45% respondents from the UCC did not want to work in the industry after graduation. A greater number of respondents, 85% in UCC, 90% in UENR and 92% in UDS believed a decision to invest in tourism and hospitality education career was worthwhile. Contrary to the above 50% of all respondents surveyed in the three institutions did not believe one could make good income whilst working in the industry. It is suggested that career counselling sessions be organized by tourism and hospitality industry players in the universities to woo students’ interest in the sector.

Articles in this thematic issue also explore the opportunities that stakeholders, support measures, education, advanced technology and rural thematic tourism activities can provide.Originality/valueThe articles in this issue address sustainability challenges and opportunities for a small island state Cyprus that heavily depends on sun and sea tourism activity. The articles in this theme issue provide academic and practical insight through thematic literature reviews, field visits, case studies, interactions and interviews with practitioners, residents and policymakers.
