Zapadnyy Bulganak, Alma, Kacha, Belbek, Chernaya rivers belong to the rivers of the north-western slope of the Crimean Mountains. The sources of the rivers are located on the north-western slopes of the Main Ridge of the Crimean Mountains, then the rivers flow from east to west almost parallel to each other. Up to about the middle of their course, they have a character typical of mountain streams (except for the Zapadnyy Bulganak River). The river valleys in the upper reaches are V-shaped, narrow, their slopes are dissected by numerous gullies and tributaries. There are almost no tributaries in the middle and lower reaches. In the low-water period (low-water period), drying is observed in the estuaries of rivers. The catchment basins have an elongated shape along the river, expanded in the upper part, which is the main feeding area.The considered river basins, although they have, in comparison with the rest, the river basins of the Crimean Peninsula, are better studied in general, but they are not sufficiently studied. In the article author deals with the main morphometric characteristics of river basins of the North-Western slope of the Crimean Mountains. Using Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and ArcGIS software for river basins Zapadnyy Bulganak, Alma, Kacha, Belbek, Chernaya are analyzed the following morphometric parameters – area of the basin, the symmetry of the basin, length of the basin, width of the basin, configuration and irregularity of the outline of river basin, the highest and lowest elevation within the basin, the average altitude of the river basin, the average slope of the river basin. Some of the morphometric indicators are calculated for the first time. For morphometric indicators that were partially previously calculated using topographic maps and published in literature, a comparison and analysis with the calculated data is provided. It is established that the using of SRTM and the ArcGIS software allows for fairly accurate measurements of morphometric indicators of the river basin.

The study of the form diversity of Siberian poplar species P. nigra , P. laurifolia and P. × jrtyschensis serves as the initial basis for identifying the adaptive capacity of populations, their economically valuable forms and breeding potential. The carried out analysis of the polymorphism of the species in nature and their cultivated forms showed their considerable diversity in terms of their habitual characteristics. It was revealed that the species of P. nigra , P. laurifolia and P. × jrtyschensis have been studied rather irregularly. The paper features an assessment of the form diversity in the North-Western part of the Altai-Sayan mountainous area. The analysis was performed on the basis of qualitative features of the crown, bark, leaves and shoots. Within the studied territory, P. nigra is characterized by the presence of two morphotypes, according to the nature of the pubescence and two distinct forms of bark color. It has been established that the populations of P. laurifolia of the Tom’ river basin are characterized by a greater polymorphism, both according to the diversity of morphotypes of shoots and pubescence, and by the color and structure of the cortex. The white and green bark forms of the laurel poplar are valuable for sustainable construction and selection work. In P. × jrtyschensis , gray bark forms predominate in populations, and its diversity requires a further systematic study.

February 18, 2021, a flank eruption started on the north-western slope of the Klyuchevskoy Volcano (Kamchatka, Russia). Cinder cone was formed at the altitude of 2 850 m above sea level, from which a lava flow was spreading north-west. Having moved 1.2 km downslope, the lava flow entered the Ehrmann Glacier, which resulted in the formation of huge mud-stone flows. The latter made their way further north-east along the Kruten’kaya River bed and reached the length of about 30 km. The eruption brought onto the surface high-aluminous basaltic andesites typical of the Klyuchevskoy Volcano. By March 21, the flank eruption ended. It has been named after G.S. Gorshkov, associate member of USSR Academy of Science, famous Russian volcanologist.

The hydrographic basin of the Sasar River is located in the North-Western part of Romania, and it totalizes 311 km2. A large part of the catchment basin is within the mining perimeter of Baia Mare; the Sasar River is its main drainage axis. Subsequent to the systematic studies of 2003-2006, 74 taxons were identified.

The Arctic freshwater budget is critical for understanding the climate in the northern regions. However, the hydrology of the Arctic circumpolar tundra region (ACTR) and the largest pan-Arctic rivers are still not well understood. In the present paper, we analyze the spatiotemporal variations in terrestrial water storage (TWS) of the ACTR, including three of its largest pan-Arctic river basins (Lena, Mackenzie, Yukon), using monthly Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data from 2002 to 2016. Together with global land reanalysis, river runoff, and inundation extent area (IEA) data, we identify declining TWS trends throughout the ACTR that we attribute largely to increasing evapotranspiration driven by increasing summer air temperatures. In terms of regional changes, large and significant negative trends in TWS are observed mainly over the North American continent. At basin scale, we show that, in the Lena River basin, the autumnal TWS signal persists until the winter of the following year, while in the Mackenzie River basin, the TWS levels in the autumn and winter has no significant impact on the following year. As global warming is expected to be particularly significant in the northern regions, our results are important for understanding future TWS trends, with possible further decline.

New data on the boundaries of the distribution range of the Lindholm rock lizard (Darevskia lindholmi), an endemic of the Crimean Peninsula, are presented. This petrophilous lizard inhabit a wide range of biotopes in various landscape levels of the Mountainous Crimea. The upper boundary of D. lindholmi distribution in the southwest of the Main Range of the Crimean Mountains reaches an elevation of 1,520 m a.s.l. (Ai-Petrinskaya Yayla, KemalEgerek Mountain), while on the other high uplands with altitudes above 1.5 km and colder climate (Babugan and Chatyrdag), the species was traced only up to 1,250–1,320 m a.s.l. The northern border of D. lindholmi range in the western part of the Crimean Mountains runs along the Outer Foothill Range (the right bank of the Alma River), while in the eastern part it corresponds the northernmost rocky massifs of the Inner Foothill Range to the north of 45º N latitude. Isolated marginal populations found in the forest-steppe or phrygana-steppe landscapes of the Foothills and arid Southeastern Coast differs significantly in their distance from the main habitat of the species, lizards’ abundance and density. A hypothetical history of the formation of the current range of the Lindholm lizard is discussed.

Aim. The aim of the research is to study the potential nesting sites of the Spanish sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis) on the northwest coast of Crimea. Methods. Material was compiled during 2016-2018. The generally accepted methods of road and foot route census study were applied. Nesting stations were explored: nests of storks, birds of prey and corvids, forest belts and reed beds. Results. On the basis of research, the presence of Passer hispaniolensis in the north-western Crimea, in particular, within the borders of the Lebyazhy Islands («Swan Islands») specially protected natural area, has been established. It is revealed that for nesting, this species of sparrow prefers the areas close to fields and is not often found in human settlements. During the nesting period, an increase in the number from 15 to 45 pairs was noted. The greatest number of breeding pairs of spanish sparrow is found in the nests of the white stork. Late arriving birds form colonies on trees in close proximity to stork nests. Conclusion. Nesting of Passer hispaniolensis is most likely due to changes in the hydrological regime and land use structure, since rice crop rotation (until 2014) has been replaced by other grain crops (barley, wheat) and tilled crops (sunflower, maize). Thus, at present, the breeding ornithofauna of the protected area is represented by 92 species of birds.

The Dalton volcanoes include all the volcanic groups which rise up at the north-western end of Taiwan (Formosa). They are old extinct volcanoes underlain by highly disturbed Tertiary sediments. Among them Shichisei-zan is the highest and the most prominent, rising up to 1108.7 metres above sea-level. It is mostly made up of hornb]ende-andesite, hypersthene-hornblende-andesite, and agglomerates. On the western slope of this partly dissected volcano there is a very characteristic cone called Shabō-zan. Its elevation is 643 metres above sea-level, and it is mostly made up of hypersthenehornblende- andesite poured out through the thick accumulation of agglomerates. The andesite here has usually a grey colour, but often passes into a light reddish-brown variety, being sometimes associated with a noritic segregation mass. It is noteworthy that some of the andesites abundantly contain brown hornblende. This mineral also frequently appears, together with brown biotite, in the segregation mass.

Abstract:Terrestrial insectivorous birds in a cloud-forest on the north-western slope of the Peruvian Andes were described in terms of species richness, abundance, density, territory size and biomass. Abundance, density and territory size were also characterized for several understorey insectivores. The three terrestrial insectivore species, all in the genusGrallaria, had 35.25 territories on a 26.2-ha plot, defended territories of (mean ± SD) 1.65 ± 1.34 ha, dwelled at an average density of 4.4 ± 2.7 pairs per 10 ha per species and constituted a biomass of 2470 g per 10 ha. Eight understorey insectivore species had 122.75 territories on the plot, held territories 0.86 ± 0.62 ha in size, and lived at an average density of 5.0 ± 2.7 pairs per 10 ha per species. Six of the 11 species studied each occupied over 50% of the plot. Data on terrestrial insectivores from this study were compared with data from other Neotropical plots to examine how properties of guild structure relate to one another. Increasing densities, smaller territory sizes and higher biomasses appeared to be linked with decreasing species richness and increasing elevation, suggesting consistent patterns of covariance.
