In this article the author attempts to trace the evolution of the terminology of oral history and its sources in national historiography, also to determine the most accurate definitions, reflecting features of the oral information transmission and features of oral historians’ activity in the process of establishing, documentation and storage of historical sources. On the basis of the views of domestic archivists, historians and sociologists of the Soviet and of the post-Soviet periods, the author comes to the conclusion that the unified terminology of oral history and its sources has not yet been established.

This essay describes an oral history project that accompanied the establishment of an archive on the history of recent feminism in the region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The archive, which contains both written and oral historical sources, is now in existence at the library of the Bologna’s Women’s Center, the Centro di Documentazione delle Donne. Raffaella Lamberti (1989) has explained why it was politically important for the Women’s Center to establish such an archive. It should be noted that the Centro di Documentazione, since it was officially proposed in March 1982, has been a totally independent institution, although it draws financial and administrative support from the Regional Administration of Emilia-Romagna.

The article analyzes the memoirs of veterans of Cheboksary electric actuators plant. These memoirs contain a description of the activities of the enterprise’s team from the moment of its foundation to the end of the 80’s of the 20th century. The research methodology is based on the methods of «oral history», which involve the analysis of materials obtained by conversations and interviews with participants and witnesses of historical events. This gives the authors the opportunity to draw unconventional conclusions about already known historical facts and to identify previously unknown social phenomena. The novelty of the research is based on the analysis of memoirs that were not previously used as oral historical sources. In addition, the authors’ research approach is new, since the method of «oral history» has become widespread in the historical science of Russia only recently. The results of the study show that the data obtained by the above-mentioned method is an important addition to another group of sources – official documents, statistical reviews, and regulations. Memoirs of the enterprise employees contain estimates of historical events, reflecting the attitude of participants and witnesses to them. The analysis of such value judgments enables to update our knowledge and bring it closer to modern understanding. At the same time, the assessments present in the memoirs do not idealize the historical past. They go beyond official documents and are independent judgments, contributing to a more objective understanding of the historical processes that took place in the USSR in the second half of the twentieth century. Memoirs make it possible to recreate the first years of the plant’s existence, the process of forming its team, and see the assessments of the most important events in the plant’s history through the eyes of insiders. It is since that time that an electrical engineering cluster has been created in Chuvashia, which includes training of highly qualified specialists. This circumstance allows us to draw another conclusion – about the broad prospects of the chosen research direction. Memoirs contain a large array of materials that require repeated processing and continued research. This type of source should continue to be collected in the form of oral conversations and interviews. Such work should eventually result in the formation of a database with the prospect of their storing in various areas for subsequent use by other researchers in accordance with their field of scientific interests. This is also related to the practical significance of the research topic. Its results can be applied in the development of other problems in modern history, and become an example for the further development of modern methodology of historical science.

This article sets out presenting the methodological toolbox created for the study of very specific reality: the gathering of oral information in the study of armed conflicts. Taking as a valid reference the oral history technique, we explored new methodological processes that allowed us to reach the lives and stories of the people interviewed more deeply, with a closer approach to their lives, but at the same time respecting and ensuring maximum access and confidentiality. To do this, the oral history methodology was reviewed with the main contributions of feminist epistemology. Thereby, we created ex profeso new methodological processes adapted to study the role of women as violence perpetrators in armed conflicts. Our proposal expands up to 5 different phases with either technical or emotional functions. The validity of this new methodological toolbox has been tested through an extensive research in the armed conflict of the Basque Country (Spain) performing oral histories to 25 women and 10 men.

From Mościska to Jugów. Testimonies of Józefa Wójcik and Maria Kocur, repatriates from the Eastern Polish BorderlandsThe history of the inhabitants of the former Polish Eastern Borderlands is an interesting research topic, especially when connected to everyday life issues. Oral testimonies are important historical sources which help explore the subject better. This paper presents transcriptions of two conversations with sisters Józefa Wójcik (born in 1930) and Maria Kocór  (born in 1928). Both of them were born and spent their prime years around Mościska near Lviv, and after World War II were re-settled to Jugów in Lower Silesia. The interviews were conducted in 2014 as part of a research project in the field of oral history entitled “Everyday life of inhabitants of the Owl Mountains in 1945-1970”.

The question of historicism, historical authenticity of folklore works has long been of interest to researchers, since oral history not only complements historical sources, but often presents a mixed interpretation of events and characters. In their own way, the people also interpreted the events of the Hungarian liberation revolution of 1848-1849 under the leadership of Layosh Koshut against the Hapsburg dynasty, combined with such a pressing issue for peasants as the abolition of the serfdom. The slavic folklore about Layosh Koshut is represented by folk songs and legends, and reproduces the main points of the liberation war: the mobilization of the local population, its struggle for freedom, the arrival of the Russian army and defeat, the capitulation and escape of Koshut, etc., as well as such a pressing issue for peasants as the elimination of the serfdom, which peasants associate with Koshut or with the Cossier. People’s views on Koshut in songs are controversial. They partially contain anti-Hungarian motives, Koshut’s condemnation, in others his defeat is sympathy. The peasants are struggling for national and social freedom, as opposed to the serfdom, which is devoted to many places in the folk narratives of the region. Over time, in folk works, there is a permutation of time and space, some historical characters and places are replaced by others, changing and actualizing. The article addresses the problem of historical authenticity of folklore works, peculiarities of reproduction of events by artistic and poetic means, their parallels with Hungarian sources, transformation and actualization over time.

AbstractThis article is built upon both an observation and a paradox. The observation is that the dream is nowhere to be found – at least at first glance – as a theme in Tuareg oral sources and ancient poetic tradition. The paradox expresses itself in the visceral relationship poets maintain with the dream, because oneiric inspiration – from the creative and visionary dreams of poets of the past – is pervasive in their work. Using an interdisciplinary approach at the crossroads of psychological anthropology, oral history and the ‘archival turn’, the article explores the theme of the dream in Tuareg historical sources and in relation to contemporary practices.
