ABSTRACTThe aim of this paper is to propose tentatively a normative logical criterion for assessing the acceptability of headlines in the press defined in terms of the informativeness or semantic strength of propositions they express. Additionally, we show that proposed criterion fits well with van Dijk's application of Discourse Analysis Theory to the structures of news in the press.

This paper provides a comprehensive explanation of the theoretical foundations of multimodal discourse analysis theory as applied to speaking instructional design. The specific application of multimodal theory in the teaching of elementary English speaking classrooms is explored through the teaching design of elementary English speaking classrooms, the teaching implementation of multimodal teaching design is carried out, and the effect of the teaching practice of elementary English speaking guided by multimodal discourse analysis theory is comprehensively evaluated through classroom observation method, questionnaire survey method, and interview method, combined with the teaching evaluation and teaching implementation effect, which is the multimodal teaching design. The paper also summarizes the findings and shortcomings of the study. Through the teaching design and implementation, the advantages of multimodal teaching are obvious; it can combine with modern advanced teaching techniques to create more realistic communicative situations in the classroom, gather and present various modal resources and information, and ensure rich and diverse language input; students can receive various sensory stimuli in the classroom, deepen their memory and experience of language, increase the interest of classroom teaching, and improve students’ participation. It also increases the interest of the classroom and enhances students’ participation and motivation. Based on multimodal theory, the author designed a multimodal teaching framework for a semester-long speaking course in the speaking classroom for reference. The fuzzy measures were constructed based on subsets of language segments containing 10 phonemes belonging to the same HDP set. Finally, linguistic scores are given by the Surgeon integral model based on the plausibility of the system and the fuzzy measures. The experimental results based on Sphinx-4 show that the evaluation model yields plausible and stable evaluation results for the 3 test sets at an average correct recognition rate of 84.7% of phonemes.

Kata kunci: ideologi, bahasa politik, analisis wacana kritis AbstractThe current study aims at: (1) to explore the ideology conceived in Soekarno’s political language as one of the nation founding fathers and the proclaimer of Indonesia independence, (2) to explore the motivations behind the birth of ideology in the language, and (3) to see the socio-cultural changes as the result of Soekarno’s political ideology. To achieve the research objectives, researcher used Critical Discourse Analysis Theory (CDA) of Fairclough (1989, 1995, 2005, 2006) as the main theory, and the theory of Ideology as a supporting theory. The method applied in data collection was documentation method, while the method applied in data analysis was descriptive qualitative method that applied based on three analysis levels of Fairclough CDA theory. The results show that the ideology contained in Soekarno’s political language is the ideology of ‘unity as an important thing’, the ideology of ‘revolution as an integral part of the Indonesian nation soul’, and the ideology of ‘imperialism as the main enemy of the Indonesia’. The ideology needs to be lived for the sake of Indonesia’s endurance, security and peace. Furthermore, the ideology is based on a plural nation state and the realization that static nature is a barrier to the progress of a nation. The ideology contents have brought changes in the way of communication and the way of Indonesian nation life. Keywords: ideology, political language, critical discourse analysis

Abstract The representation of sex work in the media has received little to no attention in the field of linguistics and discourse analysis. Given that news discourse can have a huge impact on public opinions, ideologies and norms, and the setting of political agendas and policies (van Dijk 1989), the study adopts a Corpus-Assisted Critical Discourse Analysis (CACDA) approach (Baker, Gabrielatos, KhosraviNik, Krzyżanowski, McEnery & Wodak 2008), seeking to explore whether journalists reproduce or challenge negative stereotypes vis-à-vis sex work. Examining 82 articles published in three Greek newspapers (Kathimerini, TA NEA, Efimerida ton Syntakton) in 2017, this paper considers the lexico-grammatical choices that are typically involved in the representation of sex work and sex workers in the Press. Drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics, the Discourse Historical Approach and corpus linguistics, the analysis links the textual findings (micro-level context) with the discourse practice context (meso-context) as well as the social context in which sex work occurs (macro-context). Findings illustrate that although sex work in Greece has been legalised for about two decades, traces of abolitionist discourses can be found in the Press, building barriers in the emancipatory efforts of sex workers who stand up for having equal civil and labour rights as their fellow citizens.

This article provides a critical discourse analysis of Scottish newspaper reports relating to football and ‘sectarianism’ in Scotland. It claims that there is a powerful and longstanding ideological ‘framing’ of sectarianism in sections of the Scottish press that is latently power-laden. This discourse attempts to construct and reaffirm a unified non-sectarian core identity that ‘real’ and ‘authentic’ Scots (should) share in opposition to a set of sectarian ‘others’. The various connotations attached to sectarian and sectarianism, together with their use in particular ways that reflect an ideological hegemony, are illustrated. Much of the press treatment of sectarianism is shown to lack sensitivity to the historical, hierarchical and relational aspects of religious, political and ethnic identities in Scotland.

In one of the 13 October 2016 news, this Detiknews media online shows certain ideology to the 2017 Jakarta Governor Election. To find out the ideology or the perspective of the media to the election, the writer analyzes the news text using critical discourse analysis theory of Norman Fairclough. Yet, the writer limits the analysis only on the description of the vocabulary, grammatical, and textual structure. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method, while the data is analyzed by using the equivalent method. The equivalent method is used to analyze the meaning of vocabulary, phrase, or sentences in the article. The data is collected by using deep-listening and note-taking techniques. The analysis result shows that Detiknews media online in “Panasnya Pilgub DKI: Ada Upaya Serius Ganjal Agus-Sylvi, Ada yang panik?” of 13 October 2016 uses vocabulary of expression to attract readers. It also uses many active sentences. As in textual structure, the text has been affected situationally, socially, and institutionally.
