Immigration from one location to another in search for a better life has been an ongoing human process. The process, as a matter of fact, began before the WWI and it continues till now. It was dramatically increased during the era of the wars. Early immigrations involved unskilled and illiterate people whose common labor was peddling. Peddling vastly enabled immigrants assimilate into American multi-cultures. It is the base on which the history of Arab American is documented. The paper is aimed to discuss the concept of immigration first, investigating the three distinctive waves of Arab immigrants to the United States, focusing on early migrations and early American cultures, the act of peddling, and how Arab immigrants assimilated to the American society. The study will answer the questions: How did Alixa Naff become American? What experience did she lead? And how did she affect the society of Arab Americans? The study originally depended on Naff's Collections which is a key insight of experiences of the first wave Arab Immigrants based on oral real history interviewed by immigrants in the new country.

AbstractUnited States has been well known as the country of immigrants since 1492. Over the years, people used to migrate to the United States from all over the world in order to share the vantages of the ‘American Dream’. Arabs started their systematic migration to the United States in the 1870s. Initially they perceive themselves as immigrants whose aim is to earn economic amelioration. This article traces the history of Arab migration to the United States and exposes the multifarious push and pull-factors behind the migration of each wave. Constantly, the United States used to impose deliberate migration laws that aim to either to restrict or recruit immigrants from particular races and nationalities. Thereby, this paper reviews different legislations and policies that have been executed by American authorities in order to restrict or ban the Arab immigrants from migrating to the United States. Consequentially, such legislations contributed in the isolation of the Arab immigrants from the other worlds.AbstrakAmerika adalah dikenal sebagai negara imigran sejak tahun 1492. Bertahun-tahun orang-orang bermigrasi ke Amerika dari seluruh dunia untuk menikmati sebuah ‘Mimpi Amerika’. Orang Arab memulai migrasi yang sistematis ke Amerika tahun 1870-an. Awalnya mereka memandang diri sebagai pendatang yang bertujuan untuk mencapai perbaikan ekonomi. Makalah ini menelusuri sejarah migrasi orang Arab ke Amerika dan menjelaskan faktor tarik-menarik di balik gelombang migrasi. Seringkali Amerika memaksakan undang-undang migrasi yang bertujuan untuk membatasi atau merekrut imigran dari ras dan kebangsaan tertentu. Oleh karena itu, makalah ini mengulas peraturan perundang-undangan dan kebijakan yang berbeda yang dijalankan oleh pemerintah Amerika untuk membatasi imigran Arab agar tidak bermigrasi ke Amerika. The first completely researched history of U.S. Spanish-language television traces the rise of two foremost, if widely unrecognized, modern American enterprises—the Spanish-language networks Univision and Telemundo. It is a standard scholarly history constructed from archives, original interviews, reportage, and other public materials. Occasioned by the public’s wakening to a “Latinization” of the U.S., the book demonstrates that the emergence of Spanish-language television as a force in mass communication is essential to understanding the increasing role of Latinos and Latino affairs in modern American society. It argues that a combination of foreign and domestic entrepreneurs and innovators who overcame large odds resolves a significant and timely question: In an English-speaking country, how could a Spanish-speaking institution have emerged? Through exploration of significant and colorful pioneers, continuing conflicts and setbacks, landmark strides, and ongoing controversies—and with revelations that include regulatory indecision, behind-the-scenes tug-of-war, and the internationalization of U.S. mass media—the rise of a Spanish-language institution in the English-speaking U.S. is explained. Nine chapters that begin with Spanish-language television’s inception in 1961 and end 2012 chronologically narrate the endeavor’s first 50 years. Events, passages, and themes are thoroughly referenced.

Historian John Higham once referred to anti-Catholicism as “by far the oldest, and the most powerful of anti-foreign traditions” in North American intellectual and cultural history. But Higham’s famous observation actually elided three different types of anti-Catholic nativism that have enjoyed a long and quite vibrant life in North America: a cultural distrust of Catholics, based on an understanding of North American public culture rooted in a profoundly British and Protestant ordering of human society; an intellectual distrust of Catholics, based on a set of epistemological and philosophical ideas first elucidated in the English (Lockean) and Scottish (“Common Sense Realist”) Enlightenments and the British Whig tradition of political thought; and a nativist distrust of Catholics as deviant members of American society, a perception central to the Protestant mainstream’s duty of “boundary maintenance” (to utilize Emile Durkheim’s reading of how “outsiders” help “insiders” maintain social control). An examination of the long history of anti-Catholicism in the United States can be divided into three parts: first, an overview of the types of anti-Catholic animus utilizing the typology adumbrated above; second, a narrative history of the most important anti-Catholic events in U.S. culture (e.g., Harvard’s Dudleian Lectures, the Suffolk Resolves, the burning of the Charlestown convent, Maria Monk’s Awful Disclosures); and finally, a discussion of American Catholic efforts to address the animus.

The End is near! This phrase, so well known in the contemporary United States, invokes images of manic self-proclaimed prophets of doom standing on street corners shouting their warnings and predictions to amused or indifferent passersby. However, such proclamations have long been a feature of the American cultural landscape, and were never exclusively the domain of wild-eyed fanatics. A Dream of the Judgment Day describes the origins and development of American apocalypticism and millennialism from the beginnings of English colonization of North America in the early 1600s through the formation of the United States and its travails in the nineteenth century. It explores the reasons why varieties of millennialism are an essential component of American exceptionalism, and focuses upon the nation’s early history to better establish how millennialism and apocalypticism are the keys to understanding early American history and religious identity. This sweeping history of eschatological thought in early America encompasses not just traditional and non-traditional Christian beliefs in the end of the world, but also how American Indians and African Americans have likewise been influenced by, and have expressed, those beliefs in unique ways.

The long history of Islam in the United States is not well understood. The first Muslims to come to this country were African slaves followed by Muslims from the Ottoman Empire. As time went by, other Muslims from different parts of the world followed suit. Today, Muslims form part of the sociocultural and religious diversity of US society. A unique feature of this community is its diversity, a function of different schools of thought as well as different migration trajectories in terms of ethnicity, gender, age, class, and countries of origin. Its diversity has generated a rich body of knowledge on health care that can enrich the American biomedical model. Yet, this knowledge has been subjugated and remains unrecognized owing to structural exclusion of Muslims exacerbated by 9/11. The aim of this article is to highlight health beliefs and practices of American Muslims with the view to recognizing their contribution to American society, leading to greater acceptance of this community. In sum, beyond addressing systemic exclusion, it is important to recognize that American Muslims have a long history and richness in understanding health in diverse sociocultural milieus in Islam that can and should be recognized in clinical care.

There is perhaps no topic that has generated more sustained interest and controversy in the United States during the past three decades than the public policies called “entitlements.” From the Great Society innovations of the 1960s to the guaranteed income plan of the 1970s to the “health security” proposal of the early 1990s, debate over the issue of which U.S. citizens should be entitled to what kind of national-level benefits has been a constant in American political life. Though consensus has occasionally been reached, moments of accord have been fragile and fleeting. Late 1995 and early 1996 found both President William Clinton and a large, bipartisan majority of Congress targeting poor Americans and their benefits, advocating an “end to welfare as we know it.” Yet interbranch disagreement over the way that “welfare” reform should be implemented reached such heights that the annual U.S. budget development process broke down, resulting in repeated shutdowns of government agencies and the threat that, for the first time in the history of the American nation, the United States would default on its obligations to its creditors.
