Energy harvesting from wind in urban areas is an important solution to meet energy needs and environmental care. This study describes the effect of blade angle on the aerodynamic performance of small-scale Archimedes spiral-wind-turbine blades by computational simulation, which is experimentally validated. Archimedes wind turbine is classified as one of the HAWTs. The computational approach was used to predict the aerodynamic performance of the scaled-down rotor blades. Blade angle is defined by the angle between the rotational axis and the tip of the blade, which varied from 50° to 65° with an interval of 5°. The computational study was carried out using the ANSYS CFX 19 software for a steady incompressible flow. The performance parameters of the wind turbine, which are power and torque coefficients were explored for different blade angles. This was carried out for wind speed from 5 to 12 m/s with an interval of 1 m/s. In order to validate the results of the computational simulation, an experimental study was carried out using a scaled-down 3D-printed models. The experimental study concentrated on the effect of blade angle on the rotating speed for the different turbine models. Obviously, the results highlight that the maximum power coefficient has an inverse relation to the blade angle.

Sound emission from an onshore wind turbine is one of the significant hurdles to use wind energy to its full potential. The vibration caused by the generator is transmitted to the blades, which radiates the sound to the surrounding. The purpose of this experimental study is to present a passive vibration reduction concept, which is based on the high damping properties of granular materials. The efficiency of this concept will be investigated using a laser scanning vibrometer device. For the experimental purpose in the laboratory, small-scale replicas inspired by the original configurations are used as reference geometries for the wind turbine generator and the blades. Vibrations of the prototype, with and without granular material filling, will be determined and compared with each other. The influence of the amount of granular material inside the structure is also investigated. Apart from this, different types of granular filling are examined with respect to their efficiency in reducing the amplitude of vibration of the structure while being as light as possible in order to design a lightweight solution, which increases the overall mass of the wind turbine marginally.

This paper focuses on a computational and experimental study of flat-shaped turbine blades for a small scale Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). In the computational analysis, a 2-Dimensional (2D) wind turbine model with three flat blades was designed using Ansys Flu-ent, which is computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The wind speed around the blades was simulated in a range of 3 m/s to 8 m/s. Velocity and pressure distributions of the airflow around the blades were then observed. Pressures acting on the blades surface were then averaged and used to estimate the angular speed of the wind turbine model using the principles of torque and moment of inertia. A small-scale prototype was designed, fabricated and tested to validate the simulation result. Testing results show that the wind turbine prototype can rotate with an average speed of 148.8 rpm when having a 3.27 m/s wind speed. At the similar wind speed, the simulation result has estimated the angular speed to be 119 rpm. The percentage difference of the angular speed is about 20%. .

The Savonius-style wind turbine, a class of vertical axis wind turbines, can be a viable option for small scale off-grid electricity generation in the context of renewable energy applications. A better self-starting capability at low wind speeds is one of the major advantages of this turbine. However, as reported in open literature, the power coefficient of the conventional design is found to be inferior as compared to its counterparts. In this regard, a new blade design has been developed. In the present investigation, the aerodynamic performance of this newly designed turbine is assessed under an oriented jet. This is affected by installing deflectors upstream of the turbine blades. The intention of this study is to maximize the utilization of wind energy at the exhaust systems of several practical applications. Experiments are carried out in a low speed wind tunnel at a wind speed of 6.2 m/s. The gradual loads applied to the turbine, and the corresponding rotational speeds are recorded. Power and torque coefficients are calculated at various mechanical loads. Further, all the estimated data are corrected by a suitable correction factor to account for the wind tunnel blockage effects. The results obtained are compared with the experimental data of modified Bach and conventional designs. The results have shown a significant improvement in the performance of newly designed Savonius-style wind turbine under the concentrated and oriented jet.

Abstract. There is continuous effort to try and improve the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine blades. This experimental study focusses on the addition of a passive slat on a thick airfoil typically used in the inboard part of commercial wind turbine blades. Nine different slat configurations are considered, with both a clean and tripped main airfoil. The results are compared with the performances of the airfoil without slat, as well as the airfoil equipped with vortex generators. It is found that, when the airfoil is clean, the increase in lift-to-drag ratio due to the presence of a slat is larger than when vortex generators are used. This is also true for the tripped airfoil, but only at small angles of attack. As expected, in all configurations, the presence of the slat delays flow separation and stall. Finally, for a clean airfoil and small angles of attack, the slat decreases the lift-to-drag ratio of the main airfoil only. By contrast, as the angle of attack increases, it seems that the slat changes the flow field around the main airfoil in such a way that its lift-to-drag ratio becomes larger than for the airfoil without slat. These effects are less pronounced when the airfoil is tripped. This work helps to better understand the role of slat in improving the aerodynamics of blade sections. It can also be used to validate simulation tools in the field.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the performance of glass fiber (GF)-reinforced polypropylene (PP) for wind turbine blades. Support for theoretical blade movement of horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs), simulation, and analysis were performed with the Ansys computer package to gain insight into the durability of polypropylene-chopped E-glass for application in turbine blades under aerodynamic, gravitational, and centrifugal loads. Typically, polymer nanocomposites are used for small-scale wind turbine systems, such as for residential applications. Mechanical and physical properties of material composites including tensile and melt flow indices were determined. Surface morphology of polypropylene-chopped E-glass fiber and functionalized MWCNTs nanocomposites showed good distribution of dispersed phase. The effect of fiber loading on the mechanical properties of the PP nanocomposites was investigated in order to obtain the optimum composite composition and processing conditions for manufacturing wind turbine blades. The results show that adding MWCNTs to glass fiber-reinforced PP composites has a substantial influence on deflection reduction and adding them to chopped-polypropylene E-glass has a significant effect on reducing the bias estimated by finite element analysis.

Gulf and South African countries have enormous potential for wind energy. However, the emergence of sand storms in this region postulates performance and reliability challenges on wind turbines. This study investigates the effects of debris flow on wind turbine blade performance. In this paper, two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the transition SST turbulence model are used to analyze the aerodynamic performance of NACA 63415 airfoil under clean and sandy conditions. The numerical simulation of the airfoil under clean surface condition is performed at Reynolds number 460×103, and the numerical results have a good consistency with the experimental data. The Discrete Phase Model has been used to investigate the role sand particles play in the aerodynamic performance degradation. The pressure and lift coefficients of the airfoil have been computed under different sand particles flow rates. The performance of the airfoil under different angle of attacks has been studied. Results showed that the blade lift coefficient can deteriorate by 28% in conditions relevant to the Gulf and South African countries sand storms. As a result, the numerical simulation method has been verified to be economically available for accurate estimation of the sand particles effect on the wind turbine blades.
