Abstract The temperature distribution of a 4-row tapered roller bearing in 1700mm cold rolling mill is studied by finite element analysis. A mathematical model of heat transfer and the boundary conditions of the bearing system are given. The results of temperature measurement in the bearing show a satisfactory agreement with the calculated results.

Abstract The analysis and computation on stress and load-distribution state of rolling bearings via finite element method is one of the major studies on rolling bearings. This finite element analysis is much more complicated than that of common structures because of the contact problems existed in it and most of them can not be treated as plane prolems. This paper not only discusses the basic method of 3D contact finite element analysis and its solving technique in terms of the characteristics of four-row taper roller bearings attached to cold-rolling-mill work rolls, but also presents a simplified analytical model and computing results. The load-distribution curve under different working conditions is illustrated too in this paper.

Due to the requirement of magnetic properties of silicon steel sheets, producing high-precision size strips is the main aim of the cold rolling industry. The tapered work roll shifting technique of the six-high cold rolling mill is effective in reducing the difference in transverse thickness of the strip edge, but the effective area is limited, especially for a high crown strip after the hot rolling process. The six-high mill with a small work roll size can produce a strip with higher strength and lower thickness under a smaller rolling load. At the same time, the profile of the strip can be substantially improved. By advancing a well-established analytical method, a series of simulation analyses are conducted to reveal the effectiveness of a small work roll radius for the strip profile in the six-high cold rolling process. Through the analysis of flattening deformation and deflection deformation on the load, the change rule of the strip profile produced by the work roll with a small roll diameter can be obtained. Combined with theoretical analysis and industrial experiments, it can be found that the improvement effect of the small work roll radius on the profile of the silicon strip is as significant.

This article focuses on the launch of Sputnik that transfixed the world by Carpenter Technology Corp. By incorporating advanced processing equipment, including a rolling mill, shape controller, annealing furnaces, wet grinders, and leveler with state-of-the-art automated control systems, Carpenter has improved the productivity and quality of its high value strip at a time when Space Shuttle launchings are taken in stride. The Carpenter specialty strip facility installed a cold rolling mill designed by Joseph Frohling GmbH of Olpe, Germany, in November last year, to increase rolling capacity and guarantee that the steel strip it produces meets the desired shape and thickness. In the Frohling mill, strip passes between two working rolls that reduce its thickness to sizes between 0.150 and 0.008 inch, at speeds up to 1500 feet per minute. Carpenter also installed three Ebner vertical annealing furnaces. Coiled strip on mandrels is unwound through each furnace, annealed, then rewound continuously to promote productivity.

For the problem of balance bearing of universal spindle in rolling mill being prone to damage, the paper established mechanical model and finite element model of universal spindle. The paper has analyzed that the shear and bending moment in the middle of the shaft is the largest. The fillet near shoulder of balance bearing of the spindle is dangerous part. In order to reduce principal stress of universal spindle caused by moment, the paper improved balance mode of the spindle. The equilibrant was applied from in one place of shaft to put in two places. After optimizing, equivalent stress of the spindle is slight smaller than before under the same loading condition, which illustrates that the strength of the spindle is appropriately improved. Although the effect is not obvious, this has played a guiding role for the optimization of balance mode of universal spindle.

In order to improve the cold rolled steel strip flatness, the load distribution of the tandem cold rolling process is subject to investigation and optimization. The strip deformation resistance model is corrected by an artificial neural network that is trained with the actual measured data of 4500 strip coils. Based on the model, a flatness prediction model of strip steel is established in a five-stand tandem cold rolling mill, and the precision of the flatness prediction model is verified by rolling experiment data. To analyze the effect of load distribution on flatness, the flatness of stand 4 is calculated to be 7.4 IU, 10.6 IU, and 16.8 IU under three typical load distribution modes. A genetic algorithm based on the excellent flatness is proposed to optimize the load distribution further. In the genetic algorithm, the classification of flatness of stand 4 calculated by the developed flatness prediction model is taken as the fitness function, with the optimal reduction of 28.6%, 34.6%, 27.3%, and 18.6% proposed for stands 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The optimal solution is applied to a 1740 mm tandem cold rolling mill, which reduce the flatness classification from 10.8 IU to 3.2 IU for a 1-mm thick steel strip.

Y-Type rolling mill with three roller is a new kind of wire mill. The three-dimensional models of rolling are established by Pro/E. Based on the finite element analysis software ANSYS/LS-DYNA, the rolling process of wire by Y-type rollers is simulated. The rolling piece movement is analysed. Stress and strain of Y-type roller are also analysed.
