The aim of this paper was to examine university students’ propensity for entrepreneurship in the context of the evaluation of the quality of macro-environment and business environment. A part of this aim was a comparison of defined factors in the Czech and the Slovak Republic. In relation with the research aim, a survey-based research was conducted with university students in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. 409 students in the Czech Republic and 568 students in Slovakia were approached during this research. To verify the defined scientific hypotheses, the regression analysis was used. The research results brought interesting findings, namely that the present macroeconomic environment does not prevent students from starting their own business, and that the present level of basic macroeconomic factors (GDP, employment, inflation) determine the students’ propensity for entrepreneurship in both countries. In Slovak Republic, the administrative workload is seen by the students as a factor discouraging them from entrepreneurship after graduating from college. The students feel that the conditions for doing business have improved in the last five years. Students in the Czech Republic think that the conditions for doing business have improved over the past five years, and consider the business environment to be reasonably risky and of good quality.

This paper contains views of managers on the quality of business environment and also reflects the results of the World Bank, which annually assesses the conditions for doing business in different countries, including the Czech Republic. The business environment of the Czech Republic was evaluated based upon the results of the World Bank, which assesses conditions for doing business in various parts of the world. Secondly, views of SME managers on the quality of the business environment were presented. The World Bank’s „Doing Business 2011“ report puts the Czech Republic in the 63rd place (out of 183 examined countries) when it comes to the quality of the business environment. The Czech Republic improved its score in two categories (Property Registration and Ending a Business) compared to the same evaluation conducted in 2010. SME managers evaluated the business environment with SWOT Analysis. „Technical and technological development along with increase in demand for innovated products made by new technologies“ was perceived as the most significant opportunity (82%) while „Competition and rivalry in the industry“ was identified as the most significant threat by almost all respondents (92%) in their 2010 evaluation.

Abstract The paper’s aim is to examine the dependence of the quality of the business environment on defined technological factors (availability of human capital and research and development infrastructure) and to define and quantify significant technological factors that create the quality of the business environment in the SMEs segment. Part of its goal was the comparison of the defined factors between the Czech Republic (CR) and the Slovak Republic (SR). In connection with the stated research goal, a questionnaire survey was conducted among businesses operating in the SME segment. Through this research, 312 companies were surveyed in the Czech Republic and 329 companies in the Slovak Republic. To achieve the primary goal of the article, methods such as correlation analysis and multiple linear regression modelling (t-tests, F-ratio, adjusted coefficient of determination, and so on) were applied. The results of the research have brought interesting findings. Research and development infrastructure, as well as the availability of human capital are important factors that have a positive impact on the business environment in both countries.

Nowadays, sustainable construction (SC) is considered as a measure to support a healthy economy. The SC concept ensures quality of life and helps minimize the negative impact on the environment, human health, and biodiversity. SC fits into the modern sustainable development (SD) concept due to the ability to improve the environment, energy efficiency, and care for future generations. Despite numerous studies dedicated to the SC concept and implementation, practical matters related to SC including the importance of macroeconomic environmental sustainability are still insufficiently explored. The objective of this research is to study the practical issues of SC in the example of developing countries. Moreover, this work is aimed at determining the importance of the sustainable macroeconomic environment in ensuring SC. With the help of correlation and regression analysis effected for the purposes of the study, the direct connection and strong correlation between the GDP growth in the country and the number of large sustainable infrastructure facilities constructed and put into operation in the Russian Federation and China (correlation coefficient comprised 0.9987) were revealed. Within the current study, the experience of developing countries in SC is also discussed. It has been outlined that for emerging countries, the development of the construction industry environment within the framework of SC is possible in a sustainable business environment. The competitive advantages for SC are considered in social, economic, and environmental systems. Moreover, the models of formation and ensuring competitive advantages of the SC enterprise are presented. This paper reveals that the stability of the macroeconomic environment is a key factor in construction industry growth within the SC for developing countries.

The business sector represents one of the most important parts of the modern economy. It creates and secures most products and services, contributing to most of the sales tax revenues. Business development is not possible without creating a favorable business environment and suitable conditions for creating and entering new business into the market. This paper focuses on the evaluation of some business environment factors in starting a business. Attention is attended to the business environment and funding activities management, including the managerial assessment of proactive, innovative, and business-supporting activities. Besides, this study encompasses the issues of obstacles and barriers to starting a business. The interest of the article is to point out the state and problems in the field of start-up entrepreneurs and the importance of supporting motivational factors and removing barriers by improving the business environment. Methodological tools of the research are classical methods of science analytics, synthesis, and data selection. The basic heuristic approach consists of professional literature on the subject matter, and secondary sources obtained from European Commission, Eurostat – Flash Barometer, and the World Bank to monitor selected indicators of the business environment and SMEs in Slovakia, EU-27 countries, and the world. The primary information was represented with the questionnaire-based survey conducted throughout the Slovak Republic, in which a total count of 426 respondents participated. For hypothesis testing, the Friedman Test, Kolmogorov – Smirnov test, and Kruskal – Wallis test was used. The empiric results confirmed the significant differences between motivational factors for starting doing business. At the same time, there are still significant barriers to enter the business in Slovakia, which considerably limit the further development of doing business in Slovakia. The article provides recommendations for improving the business environment’s current status and entering into business in the Slovak Republic. Keywords: small and medium entrepreneurship, innovations, business barriers and opportunities, business management.

After 1989, the countries of Eastern and Central Europe began to undergo significant social and economic changes associated with the process of transformation of the economy into a market economy. Transformation is not only associated with the creation of a business environment, with the formation of new legal and institutional mechanisms, but also with a change in the thinking and behavior of people including employees, managers and owners. The paper aims to identify important processes and trends in developing human resource management in companies in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. We conducted the questionnaire survey in 2018 and 2019 in various areas of business. We obtained the opinions of respondents from 1542 companies. In the research, we assume that in the conditions of a market economy compared to a centrally managed economy, employees are the most important source of development and performance of companies. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the sampling unit. The other methods used to evaluate data in the paper were the Mann-Whitney test and Spearman Correlation coefficient. The research revealed that despite a long common history, differences in the field of personnel work have arisen in the last 20 years of the independent existence of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. The only exception is employee care. It was also found that in the Czech Republic the strategic orientation predominates, on the contrary, companies in the Slovak Republic focused on operational processes. Differences were also found in the way of adaptation and further training of employees. The results of the findings can be used to design processes with the highest positive impact on business performance.

Research background: Various sources of information are available to assess possible and future financial results for stakeholders. The annual reports of companies should also include information on the risks of the environment in which the company operates and doing business. Textual analysis of annual reports can assess behavioral aspects of accounting as a source of information for decision-making. Purpose of the article: With the growing range of annual reports being observed, or the growing interest of investors or analysts in the non-financial information from annual reports stakeholders find annual reports in support of their decisions. Methods: For the purposes of comparison, we selected companies from the growing economy of the Slovak Republic, Turkey and country at war, Ukraine. In our paper we examined whether the tone and structure of language applied in annual reports changed over time alongside the changing economic growth in the country and whether there are any differences in narrative disclosure between Slovak, Turkish and Ukrainian companies. Then we compared the results obtained in order to propose reliable recommendations and tested whether it is possible to detect uncertainty of business environment in annual reports or companies by textual analysis. Findings & Value added: Based on our results we conclude that non-financial “narrative” data could also correlate with changing GDP growth of the country. The annual reports are to point out the reality without distortion, which was confirmed to us in the analysis.
