Two new oversize troglobitic species of diplurans campodeids, Pacificampadaidarabotchi Sendra, sp. n. and Pacificampanipponica Sendra, sp. n., found in three caves in two southern Japanese islands are described. It is the first record of cave-dwelling Diplurans from Japan and more specifically these are two Campodeinae of Pacificampa Chevrizov, 1978 formally known in continental Asia with three cave-dwelling species described in Russia and China near the north of the Korean peninsula. In P.daidarabotchisp. n., in addition to its oversized body, the longest ever known in campodeids family, it shows as its main differential taxonomical feature the absence of lp metanotal macrosetae. P.nipponicasp. n. is much closer to continental Pacificampa species but it shows differences in the urotergal macrosetae formula. Both Japanese species have clear troglomorphic features related with their elongated body and appendages and an increase in number and complexity of the sensorial antennal equipment with unique olfactory chemoreceptors. Two biogeographical remarks are inferred: P.nipponicasp. n., has been found in two islands that were connected during the glacial age and P.daidarabotchisp. n. lives in a single cave near another where P.nipponicasp. n. dwells which allowing to suggest a sympatric distribution; Pacificampa seems to be related with Eumesocampa, a genus from North-America, as a consequence of the Holarctic connection between Asia and America. The interests of P.daidarabotchisp. n. and P.nipponicasp. n. as endemic species in addition to their biogeographical importance should be taken into consideration to ensure better management of the three touristic caves where they dwell and especially the protection of Mejido-do cave, the only location of the large P.daidarabotchisp. n. near to an active quarry.

The genus Oaphantes is known from the West Coast of North America. Here we revise the genus which now includes three species, two of which are new: O. cryophilus n. sp. and O. prometheus n. sp. All Members of the genus Oaphantes show affinities for cave habitats. Oaphantes pallidulus is known from caves of the Coast Ranges of California and also from epigean records. Oaphantes cryophilus n. sp. is restricted to caves in the southern limit of its distribution in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, but in the north it is known from epigean records in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Oaphantes prometheus n. sp. is an eyeless troglobite endemic to a single cave in the Sierra Nevada of California. The distribution and relationships of the three species suggest an evolutive scenario likely due to climatic variations and affinities for colder conditions.

The woodwasp, Xiphydria canadensis Provancher, is a rare insect restricted to northeastern North America. Provancher (1875) based his original description on a single female collected at St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. In his recent revision, Smith (1976) saw only five females. On 7 August 1977, I collected a specimen of this large and distinctive species on the north side of Hwy. 60, at Mile 12.7, just west of the Park Museum in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. This collection constitutes the first record for this species in Ontario.

AbstractA fossil specimen of Longistigma caryae (Harris) has been found in tuff from Iceland, locality: Hrútagíl i Mókollsdal in northwestern Iceland, age: Upper Miocene or Lower Pliocene. In the present time the species lives exclusively in the region of the Eastern Deciduous Forests of North America on several genera of deciduous trees, a.o. Carya and Fagus. The find certifies paleobotanical evidence indicating that Iceland once belonged in the region of deciduous forests with a flora more like the modern eastern North American flora than any other modern flora region. The recent aphid fauna of Iceland contains only palaearctic, holarctic, cosmopolitic, and endemic species and species common with Greenland and arctic Canada.

An account is given of some Microsporidia found in certain fishes and insects in eastern Canada, among which are new species of Nosema, Perezia and Gurleya.Nosema pimephales n.sp. produces large cysts or tumours in the abdomen of Pimephales promelas, one out of a large number from Lake Guindon, Province of Quebec, being infected.Nosema branchiale Nemeczek has been observed from a cod, Gadus callarias. The organism is shown to be a Nosema, though the incomplete original description has caused doubts as to whether some other genus was involved. Further details are now given.Nosema apis Zander and N. bombi Fantham & Porter have been found in Canada in hive-bees and humble-bees respectively, the latter being recorded from a new host, Bombus vagans.Glugea hertwigi n.var. canadensis is described from Osmerus mordax from Lake Edward.Perezia aeschnae n.sp. has been found in nymphs of the large dragonfly, Aeschna grandis, collected near Montreal and is described and illustrated.Perezia legeri Paillot has been observed in larvae of Pieris brassicae.These appear to be the first records of Perezia from insects in North America, and the zoogeographical distribution of the genus is extended to the Odonata.Gurleya aeschnae n.sp, is described from a nymph of Aeschna grandis. It is the first species of Gurleya to be described from the Odonata and the first record of the genus from the North American continent.Thelohania corethrae Schuberg & Rodriguez is described from the larvae of Chaoborus flavicans. Measurements of the parasite, which were lacking in the original description, are now supplied.Thelohania bracteata from larvae of Simulium bracteatum and larvae and one adult S. venustum and Thelohania fibrata from larvae of Simulium venustum are recorded from places in the Province of Quebec. The need of reinvestigation of the species of Thelohania from various Simulium and the possibility of there being but one species, Thelohania varians Debaisieux, are indicated.Thelohania legeri Hesse is recorded as a parasite of larvae of Anopheles punctipennis in Quebec Province and of A. gambiae in Zululand. It is probably the most widely distributed species of Thelohania, occurring in Anophelines in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America.Some general remarks regarding zoogeographical distribution, habitat, host-specificity and possible origin of species and varieties in connexion with Gurleya, Perezia and Thelohania are presented.

The Macrothrix rosea-triserialis group of species (Cladocera: Macrothricidae) is characterized by (1) a well developed postabdomen heel; (2) rows of strong spines on preanal margin of postabdomen and (3) scraper 5 of limb II with enlarged subapical teeth. Macrothrix agsensis, a member of this group, was recently described from the Mexican Central Plateau based on parthenogenetic females only. It is characterized by five rows of long spines in the female antenna I, and five thick spines on setae 4–5 of endite 2 of limb I. Here we describe its ephippial females and males, as well as development of the latter. The ephippium is strongly chitinized, with a special ornamentation in the form of hexagonal cells. The male is characterized by peculiar groups of long and short spinules in the anterior half of the antenna I, three furrows with spinules on the male copulatory hook on limb I, and a longer seta in the outer distal lobe, armed with bean-like projections. With regard to the known distribution of Macrothrix in Mexico, it is now feasible to consider the existence of four possible endemic species in this region: Macrothrix mexicanus, M. agsensis, M. sierrafriatiensis and M. marthae. All of them, except the last one, are restricted to the Central Plateau. Another species, Macrothrix smirnovi, was described from Mexico and later found in Sacramento (USA). Among the widespread species are Macrothrix elegans and M. spinosa, the former one of the most common macrothricids in the Neotropics. It shows a northern distributional limit at the northwest of Mexico and it is possible to find it from north to south. Macrothrix hirsuticornis, restricted to North America has a southern limit in the north. Macrotrhix spinosa is found from north to south of Mexico, but its distribution range extends to South America. Other old records are doubtful, such as Macrothrix triserialis, M. rosea and M. laticornis, because they seem to be restricted to the old world.

A comparison of endemic Lathyrus species of different continents has been carried out with regard to venation, epidermal cell structure, and number of leaflets to apply the information so obtained to phylogenetic considerations. Morphologically primitive Lathyrus species have several leaflets with pinnate venation, and epidermal cells with undulate walls. This type is represented by all the North American endemic species and by some Eurasian ones. Most Eurasian and North African species, however, have only one pair of leaflets, parallel venation, and epidermal cells with undulate walls. The South American species are the furthest advanced in evolution. They have two leaflets with parallel venation, and epidermal cells with straight lateral walls. The endemic species of South and North America thus differ sharply with regard to the characteristics examined while Eurasian and North African species show relationship to species of both South and North America. The distribution of the leaf characteristics studied and evolution of species within this genius might have its cause in historical geology.

Studies, especially in the North America, have shown a relationship between political orientation and moralfoundation. This study investigated whether moral judgements differ from the political orientation of participantsin South Africa moral judgment and the extent to which moral foundations are influenced by politicalorientation.Further, the study investigated the possibility of similar patterns with the North AmericanConservative-Liberal spectrum and the moral foundation. There were 300participants, 78 males and 222 females,who completed an online questionnaire relating to moral foundation and political orientation. The results partiallysupported the hypothesis relating to Liberal and Conservative orientation in South Africa. Further, this studypartially predicted the Liberal-Conservative orientation with patterns in the moral foundation, whilst showingsimilar findings to the North American studies. A growing rate of a neutral/moderate society is evidenced in SouthAfrica and abroad, thereby showing the emergence of a more open approach to both a political and generalstance.”””
