The Basic Oxygen Furnace comprises a tiltable vessel supported by two trunnions in large roller bearings. To accommodate thermal expansion, the floating bearing is mounted on a deep curved beam which moves axially on two linear bearings. Under loads of 1 to 2 million pounds, the elastic deflection of this beam alters the static load capacity of the roller bearing. This paper describes a computer assisted analysis based on Castigliano’s First Theorem for determining the effective bearing capacity, and secondly for optimizing the beam design.

Most of the shipped products are sensitive against shock and vibration events during the distribution. Various cushioning materials are usually used to prevent the product damages. During the design process the protective packaging system is developed by the engineers based on the cushion and vibration transmissibility features (ie. cushion curve) of the material used. However, after the assembly of the packaged-product, these are stored for various long periods in warehouse. During this time the products pre-load the cushioning material and its parameters can be changed. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the vibration transmissibility of PE and XPE cushioning material at varied storage (pre-loaded) time and static load conditions. Four different kinds of duration (1 hour, 10 hours, 100 hours and 1000 hours) were used for the pre-loading period at three different static loads (3.488 kPa, 4.651 kPa, and 6.976 kPa), and then at 0.5 oct/min sine sweep vibration the peak frequencies of response and vibration transmissibility, and damping ratio were determined. The results show that the effect of pre-loading is minimal by PE material, but can influence the resonance frequencies by XPE cushioning material. The findings of this study help the packaging engineers to understand better the mechanism of these cushioning materials and to design suitable protective packaging systems.

This paper presents the results of both analytical and experimental study on the repair effectiveness of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets for RC beams with different levels of pre-repair damage severity. It highlights the effect of fixing CFRP sheets to damaged beams on the load capacity, mid-span deflection, the steel strain and the CFRP strain and failure modes. The analytical study was based on a Finite Element (FE) model of the beam using brick and embedded bar elements for the concrete and steel reinforcement, respectively. The CFRP sheets and adhesive interface were modelled using shell elements with orthotropic material properties and incorporating the ultimate adhesive strain obtained experimentally to define the limit for debonding. In order to validate the analytical model, the FE results were compared with the results obtained from laboratory tests conducted on a control beam and three other beams subjected to different damage loads prior to repair with CFRP sheets. The results obtained showed good agreement, and this study verified the adopted approach of modelling the adhesive interface between the RC beam and the CFRP sheets using the ultimate adhesive strains obtained experimentally.

CARB bearing is a kind of compact aligning roller bearing with internal contact and slightly curved surface, which is the most important breakthrough of bearing technology in rencent 50 years. CARB bearing’s special structural design make it has unique advantages, for example, reducing the mechanical structure size, reducing cost, extending bearing life, reducing noise, improving radial load capacity and high temperature stability, etc, so it is widely used in the manufacturing industry. CARB bearing’s roller is cylinder with arc, this unique structure is suitable for adopting cold rolling technology

As for the study on the strain performance of tensile reinforcement under the fatigue loads with amplitude of certain values, two groups of reinforced concrete slab bridge specimen were made. The fatigue test was carried out on one group of specimen, and the corresponding static load test was carried out on another group of specimen, the experimental study on the strain performance of tensile reinforcement was carried on bottom of the mid span of slabs. The results of the study shown that, under the fatigue loads at a certain amplitude, the strain performance of the tensile reinforcement tend to be stable with the increase of number of fatigue cycle, the strain value showed certain linear relationship with static load applied. When the fatigue amplitude increased, the change rule of strain with static load value applied was approximately linear, but the strain value increased more than the fatigue amplitude less under the same static load. It could be seen through the comparison of load - strain curve of the static load specimen, after effect of compressive fatigue with certain amplitude, the strain change with load applied was close to linear change, which has great relationship with the effect on concrete and reinforcement plastic deformation by fatigue load. The test results had the vital significance of further research on reinforcement performance under the action of fatigue loads.
