Although laser drilling of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites offers the advantages of zero tool-wear and avoidance of fibre delamination compared with mechanical drilling, it consumes considerably more energy during the drilling process. This research shows that by using a new, stepped parameter parallel ring laser hole drilling method, an energy saving of 78.10% and an 18.37 gCO2 reduction for each hole, while improving productivity by more than 300%, can be achieved in laser drilling of 6 mm diameter holes in CFRP sheets of 2 mm in thickness, compared with previous laser drilling methods under the same drilling quality. The key reason for this is an increase in energy input to the inner rings enabling more rapid removal of the material, while the lower energy input for the outer ring provides a shielding trench to reduce the heat loss into the parent material. The results are compared with single-ring laser drilling and multiple-ring laser drilling with constant processing parameters, and a discussion is given on comparing with mechanical drilling and future prospects, including a combined mechanical drilling and laser pre-scribing process.

Abstract The recent ground motion results indicated that the RC buildings are required to be retrofitted by different strengthening techniques. Nowadays, the external strengthening gain interest since its easy, cost effective and not required redesign of buildings. The CFRP sheets are suitable solution and utilized by a number of researchers. However, the numerical cyclic performance of connection strengthened with different thicknesses of CFRP need to be well investigated. This study assessed the performance of RC exterior beam column connection strengthened with CFRP sheets First, two grades of concrete are utilized to be control specimens, normal concrete compressive strength (C20) and high concrete compressive strength (C50) then, the specimens are retrofitted with different thicknesses (1.2, 2.4, 3.6mm) of CFRP sheets. The stresses and damage states showed the importance of connection retrofitting. The CFRP shift the plastic hinge zone away from the panel zone. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that by increase of CFRP thickness the connection resistance will be improved. The comparison between the hysteresis curves demonstrated that the yield and ultimate loading were enhanced for strengthened connection for both concrete grades and the incremental in thicknesses also increase them. The outputs also exhibited that the stiffness and ductility has increased for retrofitted specimens indicating that the CFRP comprehensively overcome the applied cyclic loading and the beam column connection is able to resist such type of loading.

In this research, the finite element method is used to develop a numerical model to analyse the effect of the external strengthening of reinforced concrete beams by using carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets. A finite element model has been developed to investigate the behavior of RC beams strengthened with CFRP sheets by testing nineteen externally simple R.C. beams, tested under a four-point load setup until failure. Various CFRP systems were used to strengthen the specimens.  The numerical results using the (ANSYS workbench v.19.1) were calibrated and validated with the experimental results.  The research results indicate a significant improvement in the structural behavior of the specimens strengthened using CFRP sheet systems. Then the validated model investigated the effect of the width of CFRP sheets, no of layers, and CFRP size on the behavior of strengthened R.C. beams. Results of this numerical investigation show the effectiveness of increase CFRP width to improve the flexural capacity of R.C. beams. An increase in the flexural capacity up to 100 % compared to the control beam.

The present experimental study includes testing thirteen reinforced concrete beams with openings at different locations to investigate the efficiency of strengthening such openings. Different strengthening techniques around the opening after and before casting include diagonal bars, upper and lower steel, and carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP), were examined. All beams were made from 30 MPa compressive strength and tested under four-point loading.  The cross section of the beams is 400 mm depth x 160 mm width and beam length 2400 mm. The dimensions of the opening are 200 mm x 200 mm. The stiffness, deflection, failure load, and failure mode of the strengthened beams were discussed. Experimental results showed that the beams strengthened with upper and lower steel around opening at mid-span increase the load-carrying capacity by 16.59%. However, beams strengthened by CFRP sheets around the opening in the shear zone increase the load carrying capacity by 47.7% compared to opened beam.
