The majority of the Spanish society is worried about the crisis of traditional values. They make television responsible of this situation and they claim deep changes to transform it in an active agent of social change. The author considers that television can assume that responsibility if all citizens support television giving his responsible agreement to the modifications that politicians are doing to the audiovisual media law of Spain. The article analyses those changes and the need of a clear conscience of the public-media administrators about their social compromise to develop the cultural and educative role of television. Si bien el autor considera que la televisión realmente puede asumir la responsabilidad de ayudar a la sociedad a enfrentarse con éxito a su crisis de valores, ello sólo será posible si todos sus miembros asumen su condición de ciudadanos y apoyan crítica y responsablemente los cambios en marcha, ya que es ahora cuando se definirán con claridad todas las funciones que constituyen la misión de las radiotelevisiones públicas, se garantizará un marco estable de financiación, y a sus gestores les permitirá la independencia del gobierno. Finalmente, se concluye que los cambios en las radiotelevisiones públicas han de servir para dar satisfacción a los sectores más conscientes de la sociedad hacia un nuevo camino a favor de la educación y la cultura. Para ello serán necesarios responsables que tengan clara conciencia de su compromiso social, ya que sin este compromiso, el auténtico proyecto reformista fracasaría como ha ocurrido en muchas otras ocasiones.

This paper offers a critical analysis of the role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that deal with planning policy in general and in Israel in particular. The inherent dilemmas of the different NGOs' tactics and strategies in reshaping the public sphere are examined, based on a critical reading of Habermas's conceptualization of the public sphere. The main objective of this paper is to investigate to what extent, and under which conditions, the NGOization of space—that is, the growing number of nongovernmental actors that deal with the production of space both politically and tangibly—has been able to achieve strategic goals which may lead towards social change.

What role is there for publicity in the global anti-corruption debate? This chapter introduces the concepts of “transparency” and “publicity” as analytical tools that account for differentiated channels through which the availability of information can induce social change. Two case studies provide insights into the role of traditional media in comparison to new social media. The first case analyzes the role of Western news coverage during the negotiations of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention in the mid-1990s and the threat of publicity as a negotiation strategy. The second case investigates the role of social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube in the success of the anti-corruption strike carried out by Indian social activist Anna Hazare in 2011. By introducing and further applying the conceptual toolkit of “transparency” and “publicity” to both cases, this chapter argues that transparency requires publicity or in the case of the OECD negotiations—the threat of publicity—in order for the anti-corruption campaign to be successful. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the ramifications for transparency and publicity as tools for social change.

The crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most serious issues facing us today. The scale of the problem is illustrated by the recent commitment of Heads of State at the UN to coordinate efforts to curb the spread of AMR infections. In this review, we explore the biochemistry behind the headlines of a few stories that were recently published in the public media. We focus on examples from three different issues related to AMR: (i) hospital-acquired infections, (ii) the spread of resistance through animals and/or the environment and (iii) the role of antimicrobial soaps and other products containing disinfectants in the dissemination of AMR. Although these stories stem from three very different settings, the underlying message in all of them is the same: there is a direct relationship between the use of antimicrobials and the development of resistance. In addition, one type of antimicrobial could select for cross-resistance to another type and/or for multidrug resistance. Therefore, we argue the case for increased stewardship to not only cover clinical use of antibiotics, but also the use of antimicrobials in agriculture and stewardship of our crucially important biocides such as chlorhexidine.

This thesis inquiry investigates how algorithms operate generally to affect the dissemination of news information to audiences. This research aimed to find what the implications of AI used in these ways are for traditional roles played by media news in public life – such as informing the public in the public’s interests and enabling informed public discourse. This research asks also to what extent the use and effect of AI algorithms are transparent to audiences and how this level of understanding by audiences (or lack of understanding) affects the informing role of media.

Despite some sporadic attention since the 1950s, the concept of the public interest has failed to attract the consideration of public relations scholars in the same way it has other disciplines. This article examines this seeming anomaly while also presenting an overview of how scholars from politics, media, law, anthropology and planning have engaged with and often embraced the public interest, including through key public interest theories or intersections with the work of other theorists, such as Habermas. The article also explains why the public interest historically polarised scholars and suggests how this may account for its marginalisation within public relations. It draws on themes developed in a new book – Public Relations and the Public Interest – in challenging public relations to more fully engage in this space. The article concludes that public relations may benefit from a deeper understanding of the complexity of the public interest and the ways in which it is viewed and adopted in other fields in order to more robustly connect with democratic processes and social change agendas.

This paper is aimed at showing that subtitling can be used to foster bilingualism and patriotism in Cameroon. The objectives are to investigate how deeply rooted the practice of audiovisual translation is in local media outlets, focusing on how it can help in promoting bilingualism; promote the use of subtitling in the Cameroonian audiovisual media landscape; and assess the pivotal role of the audiovisual translator in this sector. A sample of 151 persons was used. Questionnaires were administered to respondents and stakeholders were interviewed in two media houses: Hi TV and CRTV. Hi TV is based in an English-speaking region, and CRTV is a State-owned media house and believed to have the widest audience in the country. Findings revealed that subtitling does not only provide TV viewers with information in their second official language, but also enables them to improve on their reading and writing skills, as well as their bilingualism, among others. Subtitling is not advanced in media houses in Cameroon. Recommendations were made to  improve on the practice of subtitling in media houses in Cameroon. These include increasing the level of subtitled programmes  broadcast on TV stations, raising awareness on the importance of media information access by the hearing impaired; creating an  audiovisual translation unit in each TV broadcasting house and recruiting audiovisual translators; voting of laws to make the subtitling of some, if not, all TV programmes broadcast by Cameroonian TV channels mandatory; educating the public on the importance of subtitling by gradually introducing them to viewers through TV programmes, so that their eyes and mind could progressively get used to watching subtitled material and thus avoid total rejection of the subtitles; and training more audiovisual translators in Cameroon. Chapter 7 explains why and how behavioural and social change happened. It investigates how in the HRE classes, participants contextualised the abstract human rights knowledge within their local understandings of the world and traditional values. That contextualisation fostered revisions in participants’ understanding of themselves and others and expanded individual and collective aspirations and capabilities. This chapter also analyses the role of the programme in creating a space where gender segregation could be overcome, where men and women could sit and talk together, sharing decisions, and how that affected the aspirations, perceived freedoms, and capabilities of the entire community. The theory described in chapter two is critically reviewed and expanded.

Knowledge mobilization (KM) or knowledge translation (KT) involves the dissemination of research findings to diverse audiences. This chapter reflects on the challenges of KM when impacts are likely to be diffuse, nonlinear, far-reaching and long-term, such as shifting public discourse and government priorities, rather than small, immediate, easily measured, technical impacts. Drawing on one of the project’s knowledge transfer initiatives known as the bookette (a short, accessible, multiformat book and book launches aimed at the public, media, and policymakers), the chapter argues that this strategy put findings into a range of people’s hands quickly, while leaving room for further KM activities as the project continued. The chapter considers the importance of team-based research and KM as research activities that extend and deepen the capacity of researchers, research partners, and the community to pursue social change. Strengths and challenges of team-based rapid ethnography are discussed in light of these challenges.
