The output performance of Automobile Exhaust Thermoelectric Generator (AETEG) is related to the temperature difference and electric connection topology of thermoelectric modules, in order to decrease the ring current among the thermoelectric modules in parallel with different temperature difference and enhance the output performance, a novel heat exchanger using in AETEG is designed in this paper. The interior structure of heat exchanger with fishbone is analysed, then its surface temperature distribution is simulated with ANSYS software and experimented with thermal imaging instrument. Both of the results show that the surface temperature distribution of the fishbone heat exchanger designed in this paper is more uniform in lateral direction and dispalys an obvious gradient in fore-and-aft surface, compared with the one of cavity designed before, the novel heat exchanger has overwhelming advantage in the output performance of AETEG, and the method adopted in this paper is feasible and practical.

In order to utilize the exhaust heat of internal combustion engine effectively and enhance its fuel economy, a test bench used in Automobile Exhaust Thermoelectric Generator (AETEG) is designed in this paper, the main controller, temperature monitoring unit and single voltage monitoring unit of the control system are elaborated. Finally, several initial experiment results are provided, it reveals that prolonging the exhaust’s transmission time and path appropriately can help raise the temperature of heat exchanger’s surface and enhance the output performance of AETEG, the method adopted in this paper is feasible and the AETEG test bench designed is practical.

Abstract The maximum generated power of automobile exhaust thermoelectric generator (AETEG) can be enhanced by applying inserted fins to its heat exchanger, for the temperature difference of thermoelectric modules (TEMs) is increased. However, the heat exchanger will result in undesired backpressure, which may deteriorate the performance of the internal combustion engine (ICE). To evaluate the backpressure on the performance of both the ICE and the AETEG, the model of ICE integrated with AETEG was established with the GT-power software and validated with the AETEG test bench. The heat exchangers with chaos shape and fishbone shape were proposed, their pressure drop with different engine speeds was studied, and their effects on the performance of both the AETEG and the ICE were analyzed. The results showed that compared with the fishbone-shaped structure, the pressure drop of chaos-shaped heat exchanger is larger at the same engine speed, which contributes to the increased maximum power and hot side temperature of the AETEG. Moreover, compared with the ICE without heat exchanger, the brake torque, brake power, volumetric efficiency and pumping mean effective pressure of the ICE assembled with chaos-shape and fishbone-shape heat exchanger reduce, and the corresponding brake specific fuel consumption, CO emission and CO2 emission increase because of the raised backpressure caused by the heat exchanger.

According to the requirement of independent voltage monitoring of thermoelectric modules used in Automobile Exhaust Thermoelectric Generator(AETEG) designed by our group, a kind of voltage monitoring system based on master-slave architecture that includes several slave detecting boards and a master detecting board was designed in this paper, the hardware schematic and software flow diagram were provided, the amplifier circuit that could detect negative voltage of thermoelectric modules was designed, and the PC based monitoring interface using VC++ language was developed as well. The practical application results validate that the system designed is sophisticated and steady, it meets the real time voltage monitoring demand of thermoelectric modules and provides convenience for their optimization of electric topology structure in future.
