This paper presents the findings of experimental studies of the physical and mechanical properties of wood-filled composites based on polylactide (PLA) and vegetable filler in the form of wood flour (WF) thermally modified at 200-240 °C. It also reveals the dependence of the tensile strength, impact strength, bending elastic modulus, and density of composites on the amount of wood filler and the temperature of its thermal pre-modification. We established that an increase in the concentration of the introduced filler and the degree of its heat treatment results in a decrease of the tensile strength, impact strength and density of composite materials, while with a lower binder content, thermal modification at 200 °C has a positive effect on bending elastic modulus. We also found that 40 % content of a wood filler heated to 200 °C is sufficient to maintain relatively high physical and mechanical properties of composite materials. With a higher content of a wood filler, the cost can be reduced but the quality of products made of this material may significantly deteriorate. However, depending on the application and the life cycle of this product, it is possible to develop a formulation that includes a high concentration of filler.

Green and sustainable material is the utmost prerequisite for the advancement of a healthy society and fulfilling the necessary for the improvement in material science. Naturally obtaining wood flour has the competence to be reinforced as a filler substance in the polymer composite. The present article deals with the usage of wood flour as a filler in the polymer composite. The article comprises properties, characteristics, occurrence, the structure of wood, and the techniques implemented in the manufacturing of wood flour polymer composites. In addition, critical parameters and causes that can bring changes in the properties like tensile, flexural, impact and hardness of polymers are also discussed with the addition of wood flour alone and with nanoparticles. The advantages of using wood flour as a filler in the thermoset and thermoplastic polymers discussed, and its hybridization with various natural fibers was also discussed in the present study.

Abstract Wood plastic composites (WPC) were made from polypropylene (PP), impact copolymer (ICP) and wood flour (WF) by varying the WF content from 10 to 40% with PP grafted maleic anhydride as a coupling agent. The effect of varying WF content was studied on rheological, thermal, mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical properties. Experimental small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) data was compared with the Einstein–Batchelor and empirical Krieger–Dougherty relations. Significant dependence of mechanical and rheological properties on WF content was observed. Young’s modulus, flexural modulus and dynamic shear viscosity increased with WF content. Results of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed increase in storage modulus with WF content. Three millimeter thick compression molded composites sheets were thermoformed using axisymmetric molds with two draw depths. Sag observed visually during thermoforming decreased with increasing WF content. Components made from the composites showed close to uniform thickness distribution as compared to those from ICP.
