In this paper, a variable-coefficient time fractional heat-like and wave-like equation with initial and boundary conditions is solved by the use of variable separation method and the properties of Mittag-Leffler function. As a result, exact solutions are obtained, from which some known special solutions are recovered. It is shown that the variable separation method can also be used to solve some others time fractional heat-like and wave-like equation in science and engineering.

In this study, experimental and numerical investigations on the vibration characteristics of a drill pipe during the lowering of a subsea Xmas tree were presented. A fourth-order partial differential equation with variable coefficients was established based on Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained by using the differential transformation method. Four drill pipe models of different sizes were used in the experiments which were measured using piezoelectric acceleration sensors and fiber Bragg grating sensors, respectively. The factors that affect the natural frequencies and mode shapes, such as length, diameter, lumped mass, and boundary conditions, were analyzed. The results show that all factors have remarkable effects on the natural frequency, but changes in the length and diameter of the pipe have little effect on the mode shapes; the main factors affecting the mode shape are the boundary conditions and lumped mass. The results of the numerical calculation were validated by a comparison with the experimental results and showed good agreement.

In this work, we discuss an operational matrix approach for introducing an approximate solution of the fractional subdiffusion equation (FSDE) with both Dirichlet boundary conditions (DBCs) and Neumann boundary conditions (NBCs). We propose a spectral method in both temporal and spatial discretizations for this equation. Our approach is based on the space-time shifted Legendre tau-spectral method combined with the operational matrix of fractional integrals, described in the Riemann–Liouville sense. The main characteristic behind this approach is to reduce such problems to those of solving systems of algebraic equations in the unknown expansion coefficients of the sought-for spectral approximations. In addition, this approach is also investigated for solving the FSDE with the variable coefficients and the fractional reaction subdiffusion equation (FRSDE). For conforming the validity and accuracy of the numerical scheme proposed, four numerical examples with their approximate solutions are presented. Also, comparisons between our numerical results and those obtained by compact finite difference method (CFDM), Box-type scheme (B-TS), and FDM with Fourier analysis (FA) are introduced.
