Products of (a) allyl radical interaction with unheated Co3O4, (b) thermally activated 1,5-hexadiene or thermally activated allyl bromide with unheated Co3O4, (c) moderately heated Co3O4 with unheated 1,5-hexadiene or allyl bromide were studied under Knudsen flow conditions. Cobalt suboxide Co3O4, a typical catalyst of deep oxidations yielded acrolein in reaction with allyl radicals as early as at the room temperature of the catalyst. A similar acrolein formation was also observed in the allyl radical interaction with other oxides exhibiting different catalytic properties. It appears that acrolein is in general the primary product of the allyl radical interaction with the oxides. The results are discussed and compared with previous data obtained with MoO3.

Low-temperature post-oxidation annealing (POA) process of high-reliability thermal oxides grown on 4H-SiC using new apparatus that generates atomic hydrogen radicals by high-temperature catalyzer has been investigated. Atomic hydrogen radicals were generated by thermal decomposition of H2 gas at the catalyzer surface heated at high temperature of 1800°C, and then exposed to the sample at 500°C in reactor pressure of 20 Pa. The mode and maximum values of field-to-breakdown are 11.0 and 11.2 MV/cm, respectively, for the atomic hydrogen radical exposed sample. In addition, the charge-to-breakdown at 63% cumulative failure of the thermal oxides for atomic hydrogen radical exposed sample was 0.51 C/cm2, which was higher than that annealed at 800°C in hydrogen atmosphere (0.39 C/cm2). Consequently, the atomic hydrogen radical exposure at 500°C has remarkably improved the reliability of thermal oxides on 4H-SiC wafer, and is the same effect with high-temperature hydrogen POA at 800°C.

AbstractThe $$^2{\mathrm{S}}_{1/2}{-}^2{\mathrm{P}}_{{1}/2}$$ 2 S 1 / 2 - 2 P 1 / 2 and $$^2{\mathrm{S}}_{1/2}{-}^2{\mathrm{P}}_{{3}/2}$$ 2 S 1 / 2 - 2 P 3 / 2 transitions in Li-like carbon ions stored and cooled at a velocity of $$\beta \approx 0.47$$ β ≈ 0.47 in the experimental storage ring (ESR) at the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Darmstadt have been investigated in a laser spectroscopy experiment. Resonance wavelengths were obtained using a new continuous-wave UV laser system and a novel extreme UV (XUV) detection system to detect forward emitted fluorescence photons. The results obtained for the two transitions are compared to existing experimental and theoretical data. A discrepancy found in an earlier laser spectroscopy measurement at the ESR with results from plasma spectroscopy and interferometry has been resolved and agreement between experiment and theory is confirmed.
