The Information Technology Audit

As a critical component in almost every organization, Information Technology may provide services that allow the organization to function and in many cases allow the organization to achieve a competitive advantage. As technology costs and functionality rise, many organizations risk losing the perspective needed to ensure that their investment in technology is appropriate and well spent. This chapter discusses some auditing techniques that may help any organization to test their IT functions to make sure that the outcomes are appropriate given the costs of technology. After discussing the background of IT audits, several functional areas are discussed with example goals and suggestions for evaluating IT functions.

Fourth wave of industrial revolution is marked by the use of information technology, artificial inteligence (A.I), and automatic engines. Competitive advantage has become a necessity for every business actor when they wants to competing in the global market. The current condition definitely encouraging the occurence of massive transformation at all business levels and units this condition happens because every business actor can enter from and any other countries markets easily. this condition making professionalism of every business actor is highly prioritized like many case in the business decision making and continous innovation.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to establish the need of creating sustainable competitive advantage in banking through technology, customer relationship management and internal marketing.Methodology: The research was carried out through an explanatory research. The target population of the study was 3,193 employees of the Co-op Bank. A sample of 68 employees spread across the bank was selected. The researcher used descriptive and inferential statistics in this study.  The study used primary data. The study used a questionnaire as the preferred data collection tool. This study used the quantitative method of data analysis which included inferential and descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics included frequencies and measures of tendency mainly means and frequencies. Inferential statistics included correlation analysis. The tool for data analysis was Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17 program. The results were presented using tables and pie charts to give a clear picture of the research findings.Results: The findings indicated that information technology has significant positive effect on competitive advantage. The findings also showed that customer relationship management (CRM) has a significant positive effect on competitive advantage of banks. The findings further implied that internal marketing has a significant effect on competitive advantage. Further the findings implied that information technology has significant positive effect on competitive advantage.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: Following study results, it was recommended that investment in Information technology be emphasized in the banks as it has an effect on the overall achievement of competitive advantage. The study also recommended that banks should emphasize customer relationship by investing in a customer relationship management system. It was further recommended that employees are central to an effective CRM and as such firms must manage its relationships with their employees if they have any hope of fully serving customer needs and that this is especially important in firms where employees are the eyes of customers.

Abstrak Teknologi informasi (TI) menjadi bagian penting dalam menentukan keberhasilan perusahaan. TI memberikan kesempatan untuk mendapatkan keunggulan kompetitif dan menawarkan perlengkapan untuk meningkatkan produktifitas. PT Triexpi Properti Advisindo merupakan Perusahaan Konsultan dibidang properti, yang sudah menerapkan penggunaan teknologi informasi untuk pengelolaan data sistem informasi penyewaan properti yang berbasis web. Untuk memaksimal penggunaan teknologi informasi di perusahaan ini, maka akan dibutuhkan kegiatan audit IT. Audit TI yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini akan difokuskan untuk melakukan evaluasi terhadap rancangan database pada sistem informasi penyewaan properti pada PT Triexpi Properti Advisindo. Kegiatan audit TI ini bertujuan untuk evaluasi pengelolaan data pada sistem informasi penyewaan dengan menggunakan Domain Delivery & Support (DS)-DS11, yang membahas tentang bagaimana mengelola data secara efektif, yaitu dengan melakukan identifikasi kebutuhan data menggunakan kerangka kerja Cobit 4.1. Kemudian akan digunakan model maturity untuk mengontrol proses-proses TI, dengan menggunakan metode penilaian/scoring. Dengan adanya audit pada sistem informasi ini, diharapkan dapat menunjang semua kegiatan perusahaan dan memberikan informasi yang dibutuhkan baik oleh karyawan maupun Direktur dalam menentukan pengambilan keputusan. IT provides an opportunity to gain competitive advantage and offer equipment to increase productivity. PT Triexpi Properti Advisindo is a property consultant company, which has applied the use of information technology for data management of web based property rental information system. To maximize the use of information technology in this company, it will require IT audit activities. IT audit conducted in this research will be focused to evaluate the database design on property information rental system at PT Triexpi Properti Advisindo. This IT audit activity aims to evaluate the management of data on rental information systems using Domain Delivery & Support (DS) - DS11, which discusses how to effectively manage data by identifying data needs using Cobit 4.1. Then the maturity model will be used to control the IT processes, using the scoring method. With the audit on this information system, is expected to support all the activities of the company and provide information needed both by employees and Directors in determining decision making. This paper explores Information Technology (IT) adoption behavior in firms as fashion first and a means of leveraging competitive advantage second. In this paper, IT is treated as a product and compared to fashion apparel through a distinct set of characteristics that define the behavior and nature of the apparel market. The underlying questions that are posed by this paper is twofold: (1) Is IT in fashion? (2) If it is, then how does it affect the adoption of IT from a behavioral perspective and what are the results? Through an exploratory study of the topic, this paper seeks to provide further insight to firms on how to go about adopting new innovative technologies. Moreover, by enticing firms to pay special attention to detecting and predicting such fashions and the value they add, this paper sets the ground for future research in the field of emerging technologies and IT adoption.

The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) by Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) have the potential to enable these businesses to grow through access to new markets and administrative efficiencies. However, the growth of the smallest of these SMEs which are micro-enterprises is hindered by their inability to adopt ICTs effectively to achieve competitive advantage. This chapter investigates how micro-enterprises can adopt ICTs to grow and achieve competitiveness. This investigation of a set of seven micro-enterprises took place through an interpretive field study in which action research was used to diagnose and treat the micro-enterprises with interventions through a process of “Information Technology (IT) Therapy”. This process involved providing individualized IT solutions to pressing problems and opportunities and the development of a longer-term IT project plan, customized for each of the businesses. The increase in competitiveness of these micro-enterprises was assessed using the Focus Dominance Model and their growth through a modified model of micro-enterprise growth based on the resource based view of the firm. This research also contributes with a unique set of skills and experiences that ITD innovators can bring in helping micro-enterprises achieve sustained growth and competitive advantage.

An increasing number of organizations are struggling to overcome “information paralysis” — there is so much data available that it is difficult to understand what is and is not relevant. In addition, managerial intuition and instinct are more prevalent than hard facts in driving organizational decisions. Organizational Data Mining (ODM) is defined as leveraging data mining tools and technologies to enhance the decision-making process by transforming data into valuable and actionable knowledge to gain a competitive advantage (Nemati & Barko, 2001). The fundamentals of ODM can be categorized into three fields: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Information Technology (IT), and Organizational Theory (OT), with OT being the core differentiator between ODM and data mining. We take a brief look at the current status of ODM research and how a sample of organizations is benefiting. Next we examine the evolution of ODM and conclude our chapter by contemplating its challenging yet opportunistic future.

Continuity could be and should be strategic for the business competitive advantage. Besides natural disaster, from blackout to tsunami, businesses face in daily activities critical challenges in IT management for assuring business continuity; for example, business continuity management results must be strategic, because of the infrastructural, organizational, and information systems changes that are required to assure compliance with regulatory norms (see, e.g., the impact of Basel II norms in financial sector), or must have and maintain a time-to-market advantage (disasters can facilitate competitors in a first mover perspective). Nevertheless, business continuity is at present often synonymous with risk management at the IT level, disaster recovery at the hardware level, or in the best case?at the data management level?with data quality management. These perspectives fail to unveil the strategic value of IT business continuity as a framework assuring alignment of strategy, organization, and systems, allowing a competitive advantage in a dynamic competitive environment. Moreover, even when business continuity, under these perspectives, has become one of the most important issues in IT management, there still appears to be some discrepancy as to the formal definitions of what precisely constitutes a disaster, and there are difficulties in assessing the size of claims in the crises and disaster areas. Taking these issues into account, we propose: (a) an analysis of the different facets of the concept of business continuity, and (b) an integrated framework for strategic management of IT business continuity. To these ends, we move from the finance sector?a sector in which the development of information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) have had a key impact upon competitiveness. Indeed, banking industry IT and IS are considered “production,” not “support” technologies. The evolution of IT and IS has challenged the traditional ways of conducting business within the finance sector. These changes have largely represented improvements to business processes and efficiency but are not without their flaws, in as much as business disruption can occur due to IT and IS sources. The greater complexity of new IT and IS operating environments requires that organizations continually reassess how best they may face changes and exploit these later for organizational advantage. As such, IT and IS have supported massive changes in the ways in which business is conducted with consumers at the retail level. Innovations in direct banking would have been unthinkable without appropriate IS, and merger and acquisition (M&A) initiatives represent the ideal domain to show what value can lead strategic management of IT business continuity. Taking these issues into account, we point out the relevance of continuity for maintaining customers, and time-to-market in complex and evolutionary competitive environments. Due the relevance of IT to maintain a valueadded continuity, our contribution aims to clarify the concept of IT business continuity, providing a framework, exploiting the different facets that it encompasses, and showing the strategic implications to the field of IS&T.

Contemporary organizations face the challenge of growing and advancing in a complex and changing environment (Johannessen, Olaisen, & Olsen, 2001; Malhotra, 2000). In order to accomplish this objective, private organizations continuously innovate to attract customers (Johannessen et al.). Competition has been accelerated by information technology, which allows the appearance of new business models, introducing new competitors in the business arena (Rayport, 2001). Under these circumstances, it appears that innovation is one of the most valuable activities for any organization (Nonaka, 1996). Furthermore, the management of intangible assets such as knowledge is one of the critical factors to promote innovation and sustainable competitive advantage (Davenport, 2001; De Long & Fahey, 2000; Malhotra; Nonaka).
