Challenges in Building a Green Supply Chain

Consumers today are focusing on products that are manufactured using sustainable, environmentally friendly methods. Profitability or even existence of an industry can be impacted by public opinion. Governments all over the world are also coming up with stricter regulations for industries to comply with on items like pollution, hazardous content, conflict minerals, child labor, exploitation, etc. A number of requirements have been set up by the semiconductor industry, and Intel worldwide is working on some of the current issues: (1) conflict-free minerals sourcing; (2) using green/sustainable energy; (3) reduction of water consumption/recycling of water; and (4) migrating to unleaded parts and halogen free parts. This chapter presents the Intel experiences and challenges in building a green supply chain at both the corporate and regional levels.

Abstract Our current existence on the Earth raises a number of contradictions such as our relation to food. According to the FAO, a third of the food produced does not reach consumers; according to calculations by the World Resources Institute, even if we reduced losses by a quarter, 795 million people would have enough food to feed. This controversial situation gives topicality to the topic, which will only grow as the Earth’s population grows by about 80 million people a year and our resources for nourishment are finite. In our research we focused on households within the topic area of food waste generated in the supply chain. This focus of research is considered a difficult one because results could be found only with data logging and this method has several limitations which could distort the results. In our research, 20 households in Kaposvár were asked to log the amount of their food waste for 14 days. We set up five hypotheses before our research.

Almost every market in the world aims to go globally as wide as possible. It is important to understand the need for information and internet merged together in order to achieve such goal. Cloud systems are the new way of delivering and managing information to different parts in the world in a secure manner. However, not many organizations have moved to cloud. The rely of green supply chain management systems on cloud is not as popular as expected and not increasing fast enough. There is a trust issue raised against cloud and the adoption to it. Cloud can bring different benefits to green supply chain management systems such as the low cost of running, speed of dealing with information, and information availability which can have significant impact on energy savings. Organization contribution in the process of moving to cloud is important to attach any knowledge database to take competitive advantage.

The world economy operates on a capitalist market system where more and more natural resources are strained to produce maximum profits on the basis of achieving the efficiency of the economies of scale. As corporations' awareness increases on the jeopardizing impact they have caused to the deteriorating environment, more corporations have established a more eco-friendly operation. Greening the supply chain is one significant example of such moves. Realizing the green supply chain tendency in the industry, this proposed chapter focuses on highlighting the supply chain integration with business partners (suppliers, shippers, distributors, and customers) on Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices. The chapter shows the literature supporting the important integration of GSCM as it enables corporations to gather collective strength, skills, and capabilities in achieving its ecological as well as business objectives. Both practitioners in companies and corporations might find this review useful, as it outlines major lines of research in the field.

The forward green supply chain consisting of the manufacturer and retailer is as the background. The Game Theory is used,and two kinds of green supply chain game models are set up: the Centralized decision-making model, and the Manufacturer-leading Stackelberg game model.Then we carry out numerical simulation.We find that (1)With the increase of green level of green products, the market price of green product is increasing, the profit the manufacturer and the retailer are also increasing;(2)The manufacturer and the retailer will benefit from that consumers have strong environment consciousness.So we suggest the manufacturer and the retailer should cooperate to produce higher green level of products.
