Teacher Identity (Re)Construction within Professional Learning Communities

The research on teacher professional identity mostly focused on the process of teacher professional identity formation, the characteristics of teacher professional identity according to the teachers themselves as well as the researchers, and the representation of professional identity through teacher narratives in written and spoken discourse (Beijaard et al., 2004). However, there is much to explore in teachers' tensions and emotions regarding the issues between teacher cognition, and personal and professional sides of teacher identity (Day & Leitch, 2001). In this chapter, we have reviewed the literature on teacher professional identity in relation to communities of practice, imagined identity, and imagined communities. Various definitions of emotions and tensions as well as their roles in teacher professional identity construction have been presented and relevant studies on teacher identity construction, emotions and tensions have been discussed.

Teacher professional identity is an important factor in understanding professional lives and career decision making. Teacher professional identity may affect motivation, effectiveness, and most importantly, social and emotional well-being. Teacher identity lacks clarity with regards to a definition. This could contribute to the reason that it has not been studied as a key element for teacher social and emotional wellness during professional identity development. The process of how teachers view themselves as teachers and how their developing professional identity is shaped by their personal identity development and social identity connections has implications on their careers.

This article examines the dramatic implications of the turn towards neo-liberal education policies for teachers’ professional identities. It begins with an analysis of some of the key features of this policy shift including marketization, metricization and managerialism and the accompanying elevation of performativity. This is followed by a discussion of the implications of this turn for teachers in which a new professionalism of increasing regulation and restrictions upon practice in a policy environment dominated by neo-liberalism act to restrict and confine professional identity formation and development. Drawing upon data collected within English schools the article explores how teachers have responded to this new policy environment in ways that are sensitive to how neo-liberal policy has been re-contextualized and re-translated in different educational settings. This reveals both the power of this New Right inspired permanent revolution of educational change in English schools and the complexities of how it has been variously embraced, accommodated and resisted by teachers. The article concludes with a discussion that explores the meaning of resistance in the context of what are identified as restricted teacher professional identities where affordances for professional practices lying outside of neo-liberal subjectivities have been dramatically reduced.

Objectives: Professional identity can be defined as a developmental process. Literature suggests that residents aiming to practice in a teaching institution should receive support for the development of teaching competencies as much as they do for medical competencies, but there is limited data on how to recognize teacher identity development in residents. Our study focused on the manifestations of teacher identity development in a group of senior residents in a four-week optional pedagogy rotation. In particular, we were interested in seeing teacher identity development towards the end of the residency program, at a time when clinician identity begins to consolidate.  Methods: A qualitative and exploratory approach guided our study design. Participants were internal medicine residents, (from Yr4 to Yr6) at University of Montréal, who intended working in a university setting and were interested in developing a teaching project. Focus groups were held at three separate moments: 1) before rotation, 2) after rotation and, 3) six months after rotation. Direct content analysis was chosen to analyze our findings. Results: We observed the emergence and the evolution of teacher identity and furthermore, we identified six development pathways, which underpin the development of teacher professional identity: 1) From awkward and stereotyped usage to mastery of concepts and teaching techniques, 2) From the reproduction of implicit norms of the clinical setting to the establishment of pedagogical norms 3) From the feeling of powerlessness in teaching to a feeling of mastery and taking initiatives 4) From teaching intuitively to reasoning pedagogically 5) From a teacher based paradigm to the discovery of the learner-centered paradigm and 6) From an emerging identity as a clinician to the simultaneous construction of twin identities: clinician and teacher. Six development indicators providing operational cues to help recognize different facets of teacher identity development were then identified. Conclusion: The identity development pathways allowed us to gain deeper insights about how teacher identity develops in internal medicine residents toward the end of a pedagogical rotation. It is our hope that these findings will help educators recognize and support the development of teacher identity in their residents.

Purpose – Health and education are inextricably linked. Health promotion sits somewhat uncomfortably within schools, often remaining a marginal aspect of teachers’ work. The purpose of this paper is to examine the compatibility of an HP-initiative with teacher professional identity. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative research design was adopted consisting of semi-structured interviews. In total, 49 teachers in two school districts in the Auvergne region in central France were interviewed in depth post having completed three years’ involvement in a health promoting schools initiative called “Learning to Live Better Together” (“Apprendre a Mieux Vivre Ensemble”). Findings – Teachers in the study had a broad conceptualisation of their role in health promotion. In keeping with international trends, there was more success at classroom than at whole school level. While generally teachers can be reluctant to engage with health promotion, the teachers in this study identified having little difficulty in understanding their professional identity as health promoters and identified strong compatibility with the HP-initiative. Practical implications – Teachers generally viewed professional development in health promotion in a positive light when its underlying values were commensurate with their own and when the context was seen as compatible with the school mission. The promotion of health in schools needs to be sensitive to professional identity and be tailored specifically to blend more successfully with current teacher identity and practice. Abstract The critical role of teachers suggests that assessing teacher identity construction helps teacher educators understand the changes in teachers and design materials in harmony with their needs in teacher education programs. However, only a few studies have focused on assessing pre-service teachers’ identity in the long term in Iran. To address this gap, the contribution of a pre-service teacher education program consisting of three phases, namely engage, study, and activate to the professional identity construction of eight pre-service teachers in an institute in Tehran was assessed. Pre-course and post-course interviews, two reflective essays, ten observation notes, and two teaching performances were gathered over a year and analyzed as guided by grounded theory and discourse analysis. Findings revealed two significant changes in the participants’ identities when they transitioned from engage to study and from study to activate phases that yielded study phase as the peak of the changes. Overall, three major shifts were identified in the participants’ identities: from a commitment to evaluation towards a commitment to modality, from one-dimensional to multi-dimensional perceptions, and from problem analysis to problem-solving skills. Current findings may facilitate teacher identity construction by designing local programs matching the needs of pre-service teachers. It may also assist teacher educators by assessing the quality of teachers’ performance and developing teacher assessment tools.

The article presents a theoretical and empirical analysis of institutional factors of creation and development of successful teacher professional learning communities. On the basis of the conducted theoretical analysis, institutional factors were systemised and divided into four groups:factors related to organisational culture, to processes, to organisational structure, and factors related to financial and material resources.The empirical research reveals the relevance of theoretically distinguished factors to the practical processes of creation and development of successful teacher professional learning communities. It also singles out new factors that have not been investigated by other scholars and highlights the encountered barriers.

Teacher professional learning is considered crucial for improving the quality of education. Teacher collaboration in professional learning communities can contribute to the effectiveness of professional development efforts. In the past decade, there has been a shift from within-school to between-school professional learning communities. However, results regarding their effectiveness have been inconsistent. In this study, we examine the effects of 23 networked professional learning communities in the Dutch context, using a mixed-methods approach. Results showed moderately positive effects on teachers’ perceived satisfaction; the knowledge, skills, and attitude developed; and their application to practice. Considering the early stage of development of these professional learning communities, teachers’ participation in networked professional learning communities seems promising for enhancing their professional learning.
