Literature Review of Augmented Reality Application in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Industry With Relation to Building Information

The rapid development and adoption of AR applications, creates numerous opportunities for integrating AR with BIM and improving conventional methods used in the fields of architecture, engineering and construction (AEC). In this paper, the current trends in the development of AR applications and the application of AR technologies in the fields of AEC are proposed. Also the relation between AR application and BIM in the AEC industry with the benefits of this integration and possible issues is discussed. The related examples of BIM+AR are described during the literature review. The authors believe the papers presented in this document, cover the latest research trends and developments in the use of AR and its' combination with BIM for AEC applications. In the future, it is expected that AR applications will be further utilized in the AEC field to enhance productivity, safety and efficiency.

Over the years, the construction industry has been evolving to embrace the delicate balance between buildings and a sustainable environment by optimizing resource use to create greener and more energy efficient constructions. Sustainable building design and optimization is a highly iterative and complicated process. This is mainly attributed to the complex interaction between the different heterogenous but heuristic construction processes, building systems and workflows involved in achieving this goal. Augmented Reality (AR) has rapidly emerged as a revolutionary technology that could play a key role towards improving coordination of sustainable design processes. AR makes possible the real-time visualization of a threedimensional (3D) building prototype with linked design information in a real-world environment based on a twodimensional drawing. From past research, it is evident that this technology relies heavily on a common data environment (CDE) that syncs all construction processes with their related building information in one central model. However, due to the fragmented nature of the construction industry, different domain experts generate and exchange vast amounts of heterogenous information using different software tools outside a CDE. This paper therefore investigates the performance gap that exists within Malaysia’s construction industry towards using linked building data (LBD) with AR to improve the lifecycle sustainability of buildings. The results of this study clearly delineate how current construction practices in Malaysia do not favor the use of AR however, stakeholder perception is positive towards adoption of workflows that link heterogenous building data to streamline AR with sustainable building design and construction.

The use of building information modeling (BIM) for building sustainability assessment (BSA) is a thriving topic within the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. Despite the various research approaches to employing BSA with BIM support, the research is limited to the BIM implications of BSA methods in developing countries. This paper presents how BIM can assist the BSA processes in Kazakhstan, using a previously developed building sustainability assessment framework for Kazakhstan (KBSAF). This framework has 46 assessment indicators grouped into nine assessment categories. The categories and assessment indicators of KBSAF were derived considering the regional variations and country-specific differences in the assessment factors. In this paper, BIM functions for BSA were identified through literature review; their applicability for KBSAF was evaluated by mapping the functions with the assessment indicators of KBSAF and a BIM-based BSA framework (BIM-KBSAF) was proposed. The proposed framework was validated through a three-round Delphi survey. One of the results demonstrates that for KBSAF, BIM can assess 24 out of 46 assessment indicators. The proposed framework could serve as a systematic guide to the application of BIM for BSA. Furthermore, it can facilitate the BSA process and save considerable time and effort.

This study begins with a broad literature review to understand the Building Information Modelling (BIM) concept. Quantity Surveyors star as an influential role as qualified, trained, and proficient in dealing with glitches relating to construction expenditure, supervision, and consultation in the construction industry. When the task is getting crucial, an assistant from technology may help faster and smoother the process and task. This study aims to investigate an understanding of the application of BIM among Quantity Surveyor in Malaysia. According to the Board of Quantity Surveyors, Malaysia's official website, 101 registered Quantity Surveying Consultant firms were in 2018. This study targeted 1000 persons from different firms and expected to respond from at least 278 persons due to time constraints. The other criteria of the respondents include years of experience in the industry. Quantity Surveying Consultant firms would be the most suitable people to answer a questionnaire survey for this study. The registered Quantity Surveying Consultant firms are very well proficient in the quantity surveying practice and services. Therefore, by choosing Quantity Surveying Consultant firms to be the respondent may help in getting the most consistent answer and higher accuracy of the exploration of Quantity Surveyors productivity by adopting the Building Information Modelling (BIM) concept in Quantity Surveyor, which will further enhance the awareness of benefits of BIM to the Quantity Surveyor profession itself.

Inland terminals are becoming an increasingly important factor for disburdening port storage capacities and the expansion of the port gravitational areas. The above defines inland terminals as facilities with prolonged activities of seaports, or an integral part of the port. Due to increased interest in the development of inland terminals, the literature in the field of inland terminals since the beginning of its research (1980) to the latest research in 2015 has been analysedand revised. The review will summarize the literature related to development, classification, technological processes and location of inland terminals. In the end, the paper identifies a new proposition for further research based on the current trends and developments in inland terminals as an important factor of intermodal transport.

The construction industry of Malaysia is very dynamic in nature and the adoption of new technological advancements and construction methods has been a prime concerns for its key players and stakeholders. However, the adoption of BIM in such a dynamic industry is observed to be limited and its implementation has not been as successful as it should have been. The study focuses on the identification and prioritization the factors challenging the implementation of BIM in Malaysian construction industry. The data has been administrated through designed questionnaire by identifying the factors / barriers, by literature review, for implementation of BIM in construction industry. The prioritization of such factors is expected to help the major stake holders to address the issues according to their priority which will save lot of previous time and financial with smooth implementation of BIM in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry in future project.

In recent years, the industrial revolution 4.0 has been strongly happening and affecting many industries and fields thanks to the rapid development of science and technology. Many new technologies have been developed and applied in the construction industry, increasing labor productivity and work efficiency, and reducing construction waste. One of these new technologies is Building Information Modeling (BIM), which is being strongly developed and evaluated as a key technology for the construction industry. BIM defines all property information related to a full lifecycle of a target structure, from planning and design to construction, operation, and maintenance. In Vietnam, BIM has been effective for certified projects using state budget, private capital, or foreign investment, and gradually there is a positive change. The goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive, up to date literature review, analysis of research areas regarding BIM for bridge, highway, infrastructure, and some applications in this domain in Vietnam

Construction industry is one of the largest economic sector in the world in 2017. And Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the powerful set of technology to design, construction and management has been strengthen the construction industry. BIM has significant benefits for the project lifecycle even after it’s lifecycle but this benefits can’t gain by the project because of failure to successful implementation of BIM technology to the construction industry. The main objectives of this study is to identify the most crucial barrier to implementation of BIM and develop a relative rank with their relative impact on this issue. The study was conducted by a comprehensive literature review and necessary data was collected by literature review also. A set of barrier was developed by the literature review containing 37 barrier which curb the implementation of BIM technology to the construction sector. Relative rank based on their frequency and relative impact was calculate for each barrier identified in the literature review. The five most crucial barrier to the implementation of BIM are B17 (Social and habitual resistance to change), B19 (Traditional methods of contracting), B3 (Training expenses and the learning curve are too expensive), B20 (High cost of software purchasing) and B33 (Lack of awareness about BIM). And the five most impactful barrier are B19 (Traditional methods of contracting), B17 (Social and habitual resistance to change), B33 (Lack of awareness about BIM), B2 (Unavailability of proper training on BIM) and B28 (Lack of BIM experts). To gain the tremendous benefits of BIM technology, it is necessary to overcome the barrier based on priority with the help of government and all the stakeholder of project.

This chapter aims at providing an overview of the entire field of instructional design, starting with a brief historical account of the field but focusing on current and promising trends for the future of instructional design based on advances in instructional technology and human-computer interaction capabilities. The discussion encompasses several parallel trending areas, such as adaptive learning, digital storytelling, gamification, simulation technologies, augmented reality, cybernetics, the xAPI standard, mobile and ubiquitous learning, as well as implications of these trends for the field from both the theoretical and practical point of view. Even though this discussion is by no means an exhaustive account of these trends, it is the aim of this monogram to provide a centralized literature review of multiple paths currently being carved in the field and a glimpse to a multiplicity of potential futures for all those involved in designing and delivering learning or effecting human behavior and performance change.
