In this chapter, the authors provide an overview of state-of-the-art image enhancement and restoration techniques for underwater images. Underwater imaging is one of the challenging tasks in the field of image processing and computer vision. Usually, underwater images suffer from non-uniform lighting, low contrast, diminished color, and blurring due to attenuation and scattering of light in the underwater environment. It is necessary to preprocess these images before applying computer vision techniques. Over the last few decades, many researchers have developed various image enhancement and restoration algorithms for enhancing the quality of images captured in underwater environments. The authors introduce a brief survey on image enhancement and restoration algorithms for underwater images. At the end of the chapter, we present an overview of our approach, which is well accepted by the image processing community to enhance the quality of underwater images. Our technique consists of filtering techniques such as homomorphic filtering, wavelet-based image denoising, bilateral filtering, and contrast equalization, which are applied sequentially. The proposed method increases better image visualization of objects which are captured in underwater environment compared to other existing methods.

The main reason for the degradation of the underwater image is the light absorption and scattering. The images are captured in the underwater environment often have some problems such as loss of image information, low contrast, and color distortion. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes an image enhancement method for the underwater environment. With the help of the underwater imaging model and dark channel prior theory, a new idea of adding transmission correction and color compensation to G and B color channels is proposed. Experimental results show that, compared with the traditional methods, this method has a better effect on the underwater image with less color deviation.

Abstract This work intends to apprehend and emphasize the contribution of image-processing techniques and computer vision in the treatment of clay-based material known in Meknes region. One of the various characteristics used to describe clay in a qualitative manner is porosity, as it is considered one of the properties that with “kill or cure” effectiveness. For this purpose, we use scanning electron microscopy images, as they are considered the most powerful tool for characterising the quality of the microscopic pore structure of porous materials. We present various existing methods of segmentation, as we are interested only in pore regions. The results show good matching between physical estimation and Voronoi diagram-based porosity estimation.

In image processing applications, one of the main preprocessing phases is image enhancement that is used to produce high quality image or enhanced image than the original input image. These enhanced images can be used in many applications such as remote sensing applications, geo-satellite images, etc. The quality of an image is affected due to several conditions such as by poor illumination, atmospheric condition, wrong lens aperture setting of the camera, noise, etc [2]. So, such degraded/low exposure images are needed to be enhanced by increasing the brightness as well as its contrast and this can be possible by the method of image enhancement. In this research work different image enhancement techniques are discussed and reviewed with their results. The aim of this study is to determine the application of deep learning approaches that have been used for image enhancement. Deep learning is a machine learning approach which is currently revolutionizing a number of disciplines including image processing and computer vision. This paper will attempt to apply deep learning to image filtering, specifically low-light image enhancement. The review given in this paper is quite efficient for future researchers to overcome problems that helps in designing efficient algorithm which enhances quality of the image.

For the low illumination and low contrast in the coal mine, images captured from the video monitor system sometimes are not so clear to help the related personal monitoring the production and safety of the mine. According to the special environment of coal mine, an image enhancement method was presented. In this method the impulse noise which is the mainly noise in the coal mine was first reduced with median filtering, then the low contrast and illumination was greatly improved with the improved adaptive histogram equalization. Experiments show that this method can improve the quality of images underground effectively.

The main purpose of image enhancement is to bring out detail that is hidden in an image or to increase contrast in a low contrast image. Image enhancement techniques provide a multitude of choices for improving the visual quality of images. Appropriate choice of such techniques is greatly influenced by the imaging modality, task at hand and viewing conditions. This paper analyses the performance of some of existing image enhancement algorithms. The performance of algorithms are evaluated  both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Image processing is the use of algorithms to perform various operations on digital images. The techniques that are explained further are image segmentation and image enhancement. Image Segmentation is a method to partition an image into multiple segments, to change the presentation of an image into something more meaningful and easier to analyze. The current image segmentation techniques include region-based segmentation and edge detection segmentation. Image Enhancement is the process of improving the quality of image. Under this section there are two broad divisions- Spatial Domain Technique and Frequency Domain Technique.

Under-water sensing and image processing play major roles in oceanic scientific studies. One of the related challenges is that the absorption and scattering of light in underwater settings degrades the quality of the imaging. The major drawbacks of underwater imaging are color distortion, low contrast, and loss of detail (especially edge information). The paper proposes a method to address these issues by de-noising and increasing the resolution of the image using a model network trained on similar data. The network extracts frames from a video and filters them with a trigonometric–Gaussian filter to eliminate the noise in the image. It then applies contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) to improvise the image contrast, and finally enhances the image resolution. Experimental results show that the proposed method could effectively produce enhanced images from degraded underwater images.

The main purpose of image enhancement technology is to improve the quality of the image to better assist those activities of daily life that are widely dependent on it like healthcare, industries, education, and surveillance. Due to the influence of complex environments, there are risks of insufficient detail and low contrast in some images. Existing enhancement algorithms are prone to overexposure and improper detail processing. This paper attempts to improve the treatment effect of Phase Stretch Transform (PST) on the information of low and medium frequencies. For this purpose, an image enhancement algorithm on the basis of fractional-order PST and relative total variation (FOPSTRTV) is developed to address the task. In this algorithm, the noise in the original image is removed by low-pass filtering, the edges of images are extracted by fractional-order PST, and then the images are fused with extracted edges through RTV. Finally, extensive experiments were used to verify the effect of the proposed algorithm with different datasets.
