Investigating Faculty Members' Beliefs About Distance Education

This research paper aims to investigate the beliefs (perceptions) about distance education(DE) held by the faculty members of Sultan Qaboos Uuniversity (SQU) at the Sultanate of Oman as well as the differences between their beliefs (perceptions) with regards to gender, teaching experience, college academic rank, nationality, etc. This study used a questionnaire as a method of data collection. Findings of the study indicated statistically significant difference in terms of gender. Results show that female faculty members hold positive beliefs (perceptions) about the use of DE in learning and teaching whereas compared to their male colleagues. With regards to nationality, the study found statistically slight differences, wherein the Omani faculty members yielded higher scores on the positive statements and lower at the negative statements.

Aim/Purpose: This study investigates the issue of knowledge acquisition among faculty members. Background: The paper reports the use of knowledge acquisition tools and reading knowledge sources by faculty members. It also identifies demographic differ-ences among participants in using knowledge acquisition tools and reading knowledge sources. Methodology: The study used an online survey-based questionnaire tool for data collection. The participants consisted of 300 faculty members from 26 academic institu-tions in UAE. Statistical tests are used to verify and validate the hypotheses. Contribution: The paper represents one of the few empirical studies conducted on knowledge acquisition among faculty members in the GCC countries. Find-ings of the study may contribute to the theoretical and practical understanding of knowledge acquisition among faculty members. Findings: Findings of the study revealed that medical faculty members read knowledge acquisition sources more than other faculty members. Likewise, IT faculty members use knowledge acquisition tools more than other faculty members. Results of the study supported stage three of knowledge acquisition proposed in the “Stage Theory of Knowledge Consumption Growth” (Mathew, 1985). The study found that journals are the most sources read by the participants while web-based training (WBT) tools are the most used knowledge acquisition tools among faculty members. Results of the study indicated significant differ-ences among faculty members of different age groups, academic ranks, aca-demic specializations, and institutional affiliation in reading knowledge sources. Likewise, findings of the study revealed significant difference among partici-pants of different academic specializations in using knowledge acquisition tools. Recommendations for Practitioners: Results of the study could be extrapolated to other faculty members in the GCC countries. Recommendation for Researchers: More researches could be done to address different issues of knowledge acquisition among faculty members. Impact on Society: Faculty reading of knowledge sources and use of knowledge acquisition tools may have direct or indirect positive impacts on innovation, creativity, and re-search productivity in any society. Future Research: It will be interesting to apply more than one data collection method in the future research.

Background: The development of critical thinking skills and disposition in universities is an important goal of education. Evaluation of critical thinking disposition and its influential factors as a competency of faculty members has attracted the attention of educational experts. Objectives: The present study aimed to assess the critical thinking disposition of the pharmacy faculty members of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Iran in 2018. Methods: In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of two sections. The first section included demographic variables, and the second section was Ricketts critical thinking disposition inventory. The questionnaire was provided to 41 faculty members, and 36 questionnaires were completed and returned. Data analysis was performed in SPSS version 18 using t-test and Pearson's correlation-coefficient. Results: The mean score of the critical thinking disposition of the participants was 134.41 out of 165. No significant difference was observed in the mean score of critical thinking disposition in terms of gender and academic rank. Moreover, no significant correlations were denoted between the critical thinking disposition, age, and work experience of the faculty members. Conclusion: Due to the educational role of faculty members and the necessity of developing critical thinking skills in universities, continuous training must be implemented for faculty members for familiarization with various aspects of critical thinking and the required teaching strategies, followed by the promotion of these skills in students.

The right attitudes, belief and spirit of acceptance are the basic essentials to achievement of growth, innovation and sustainability in a constantly changing scenario. One aspect that leads to significant difference in attitudes, belief’s and perception are the demographic attributes of employees. Review of literature have shown that there is a negligence of the use of demographics in OB and HRM research leading to a state called black box filled with unreliable, vague and untested theories. Considering the importance and contribution of the Indian educational sector towards the emerging knowledge based and technology driven economy, the core stakeholders which are the faculty need to be in an environment that enables them cater to the development of minds. This paper investigates the influence of demographics which are tenure based and age on the perception held by faculty members towards the dimensions of their psychological work environment. Survey data was collected from a sample of 182 faculty members working in AICTE recognized and state university affiliated business schools in Kerala by administering standardized, valid and reliable tools. One-way ANOVA was used to analyse data. Results show that there was mixed response toperception towards work environment dimensions across the different tenure based demographics considered such as tenure with current organisation, tenure of teaching experience, tenure of industrial experience, tenure of total work experience and age. The implications, findings and suggestions for future research are detailed

Background: Pakistan is a proud country with its rich cultural values. A perfect woman is considered the one who is a good subordinate and most skillful in the kitchen, making round chapatis is the highlight of those skills. Although as a nation, stereotypical norms have shifted and females are encouraged to get medical education and become doctors, their academic contribution and representation in higher academic rank seems scarce. Methodology: In this study, we investigate gender differences in academic ranks and research in renowned Medical Institutions of Pakistan. Websites of three institutions were used to identify male and female faculty members, their respective publications were counted using “Pakmedinet.com” and “Scholar.google.com”. Results: A one-way ANOVA showed significant difference in the male female ratio at higher academic ranks. This ratio drastically increases at Full Professor level where males are three times more than female Professors. ANOVA results also show that publications by male faculty members is significantly higher than females. Even on the same rank, women have not published their work in the same capacity as men. Conclusion: The results are in alignment with several previous studies that indicate gender disparities between males and females especially as they climb up the academic ladder. Publications are a measure of academic productivity. This study suggests that although female representation as faculty members have increased over the years, their lack of frequent publications might be a factor that hinders women in advancing in academic ranks. Continued studies are required to explore more reasons for this gender inequality and highlight methods to address the imbalance.

PurposeThis study explores faculty members' outputs and citations by gender and academic rank in Israeli academia. The study focuses on the connection between research productivity and underrepresentation of women in academia. To this end, four fields were chosen, each representing a different discipline: Psychology (social sciences), Public Health (health sciences), Linguistics (humanities), and Chemistry (Exact sciences).Design/methodology/approachThe name, the rank and the gender of the researchers were collected from the researchers' websites and those of their departments. The number of publications and citations were retrieved from Scopus.FindingsFindings revealed that there is a significant difference between the median number of men and women in Chemistry concerning publications and citations and in Psychology concerning citations. Moreover, in all four disciplines, females' average number of publications was lower than that of males', and that in three out of the four disciplines (Psychology, Public Health and Chemistry), men published more in top journals (the top 5%) than females, while the reverse was true of Linguistics. Furthermore, in three disciplines (Public Health, Linguistics and Chemistry), there is an increase in the average citations per female researchers between 2015 and 2019. Further, in all disciplines, women collaborated more than men.Originality/valueAs only a few studies in Israel have explored faculty members' outputs and citations, this study contributes and enlarges the Israeli research concerning this topic.

A promotion refers to the progress of an employee’s position or ranks in a hierarchical constitution with an increase in status, responsibilities, and salary. Academic rank Promotional criteria considered by the Medical Council of India (MCI) include educational qualifications, seniority according to years of teaching experience and numbers of Publications. There is gap between faculty role in medical college and expectation for promotion in India. Impractical expectation beyond the self-competency has promoted unethical practices. The various scientific misconduct problems had faded the quality of research in India. So the expected criteria for the evaluation of faculty members are needed to be re-adjusted by policymakers, according to the facilities of the scientific centers and human, social and economic resources at the institute. This study aims at exploring Qur’anic recitation and tajweed improvement strategies within school students in Tafilah governorate, Jordan, in the viewpoint of Islamic Education teachers. To achieve this aim a data collection instrument was established: that is a questionnaire distributed to the Islamic Education teachers after validating psychometric characteristics of it. Data analysis results revealed existence of a number of strategies within the sample students, subject of the study. The study also revealed that there was no statistically significant difference in the Qur’anic recitation and tajweed improvement strategies that can be attributed to variables of: the gender or teaching experience.

<p>The purpose of this study is to determine research assistants’ perception of mistreatment from other faculty members and the strategies they prefer to overcome this mistreatment. The sample of this study includes 255 research assistants who work at seven faculties at Kocaeli University, Turkey. This study is in the descriptive survey model. In order to measure research assistants’ perception of mistreatment, “Mistreatment Scale” developed by Harlos and Axelrod (2005) and adapted to Turkish by Günçavdı and Polat (2015); and in order to measure strategies which research assistants prefer to overcome this mistreatment, “Secondary Appraisal Scale” developed by Rogers (1998) were used as data collection tools. It has been found out that research assistants’ perception of mistreatment from faculty showed significant difference depending on personal and organizational variables.  Also it has been found out that research assistants used “barriers” strategies mostly to overcome mistreatment. This research has given an idea about research assistants’ experiences about being exposed to mistreatment, but this study is limited to students at Kocaeli University. In the future researches, the samples can be extended by taking research assistants who work at other universities as the sample.  </p>

This study aimed at identifying the degree at which administrative leaderships in Tafila Technical University practicethe requirements of organizational excellence from the perspective of the faculty members. The researcher used thedescriptive approach as well as the questionnaire for data collection, after verifying its validity and reliability. Thestudy sample consisted of (107) faculty members. The results showed that the degree at which administrativeleaderships in the University practice the requirements of organizational excellence was medium, with a mean of(2.71). the results also revealed that there are statistically significant differences at (α≤0.05) due to the variable offaculty in favor of the humanitarian faculties, while there are no statistically significant differences at (α≤0.05) due tothe variables of academic rank and years of experience. In the light of the results, the study recommended a numberof recommendations.
