Dynamic Information Systems in Higher Education

The management of creative knowledge work presents great challenges in higher education, where individuals and information systems play a significant role in attaining the strategic objectives of a higher education institution (HEI). It is argued in this article that an analysis of the information systems (IS) of an organization using the concept of information environments (IE) activates the organization’s awareness of the development needs of intellectual capital and ISs. A classification of information environments is introduced, developed, and successfully applied to the core processes of an HEI. The purpose of this article is to show that the ISs can be classified according to the IEs and the core processes of an organization. An analysis of information environments helps the educational management to develop the institution’s information systems in an innovative way. In particular, dynamic ISs are analyzed for the purpose of managing the intellectual capital in HEIs. A case study on the E-Learning Unit at the Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS) is presented. The findings of the study are useful for educational administrators, project managers, software developers, and usability specialists. The article is organized as follows: First, the IE approach, useful for analyzing an organization’s ISs, is introduced. Next, the concept of IEs is used to analyze the ISs used in the core internal processes of a HEI, which is the main focus of the article. Thereafter, a short case study of a dynamic IS is presented, including future trends. Finally, the results of the study are summarized and discussed in the concluding section.

The impact of ministerial grants and EU fundson the library of a non-public higher education institution as seen in the Library of the WSB University of ToruńThe article presents an outline of the legal basis of the operation of non-public higher education institutions and their place in the Polish education system. This is the background for the author’s analysis of the library and information systems of business schools that are part of the TEB SA group. The author focuses on extrabudgetary forms of expanding the library of anon-public univer­sity through the use of ministerial and EU grants. The case study presented in the article is that of the Library of the WSB University of Toruń. The author examines, on the basis of books inventoried in 2011–2016, the volume and percentage share of books acquired thanks to EU funds and ministerial grants. She demonstrates how the Library — which, owing to the business nature of the University, has specialist collections at its disposal — acquires new forms of books e-books in mobi and pdf files, e-book readers, audiobooks etc. as well as educational aids. She presents examples of how extrabudgetary funds can support and complement the main budget of the library of anon-public university in its initiatives aimed at creating amodern facility.

The role of higher education is very crucial in developing human resource because it is a future investment which has great effect on the improvement of real sector. Higher education is proven to be an effective agent of social change. In human resource management, the role of higher education is embodied in community service program which is more known as “Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi” including acquisition, transmission and application. Human Resource management is basic administrative description or educational management based on a series of interrelated processes in guiding the behavior of individuals as the member of an organization in order to achieve its goals. The process can be identified as follows: planning, compensation, recruitment, selection, induction, appraisal, development, maintenance, performance, security, integration, and information.

STIDKI Ar Rahmah was established in 2015 focusing on creating mosque managers having comprehensive skills: mosque management, fully Quran memorizing, and deep religion understanding. In its educational system, it provides full scholarship to the students funded by a number of institutional donors and individual ones. As a newly operating organization, STIDKI Ar Rahmah has not had clear plan of development and strategic iniciatives in reaching the established vision. Therefore, this study was aimed to perform strategic planning process of STIDKI Ar Rahmah development based on Balanced Scorecard model as a strategic planning model for other newly established private higher education institutions with full scholarship program. Qualitative research approach and case study method were used in this study. It started from examining the mission and vision statement of STIDKI Ar Rahmah. The step continued with identifying stakeholders’ values proposition, SWOT analysis, identifying strategic issues, and finally developing strategies through formulating strategic objectives clustered in strategic themes, measures, next five years targets, and strategic initiatives for reaching the targets. This study resulted the recommended statement of mission and vision, three strategic issues to overcome, 16 strategic objectives with their measures clustred in 4 strategic themes, targets, and initiatives.

Brazilian public universities are undergoing an intense process of change in search of solutions to transform themselves into institutions that are more attuned to 21st century social needs. In this regard, the aim of this study was to analyze a new higher education curriculum offered at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA): the Interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree in Healthcare. This was a preliminary qualitative investigation, accomplished as a case study. The methodological tools used include document analysis, open interviews and participant observation. It was seen that the teachers were engaged in the process of putting together a course that promotes training of professionals qualified to undertake social development. It was also noted that the students were themselves proving to be capable of deep critical reflection on social issues. It was therefore concluded that the case studied has provided the results expected by the higher education institution hosting the course.
