Automatic Signature Verification on Handheld Devices

Automatic signature verification on handheld devices can be seen as a means to improve usability in consumer applications and a way to reduce costs in corporate environments. It can be easily integrated in touchscreen devices, for example, as a part of combined handwriting and keypad-based multimodal interfaces. In the last few decades, several approaches to the problem of signature verification have been proposed. However, most research has been carried out considering signatures captured with digitizing tables, in which the quality of the captured data is much higher than in handheld devices. Signature verification on handheld devices represents a new scenario both for researchers and vendors. In this chapter, we introduce automatic signature verification as a component of multimodal interfaces; we analyze the applications and challenges of signature verification and overview available resources and research directions. A case study is also given, in which a state-of-the-art signature verification system adapted to handheld devices is presented.

Automatic signature verification is a biometric method that can be applied in all situations where handwritten signatures are used, such as cashing a check, signing a credit card, authenticating a document, and others. Over the last two decades, several innovative approaches for off-line signature verification have been introduced in literature. Therefore, this chapter presents a survey of the most important techniques used for feature extraction and verification in this field. The chapter also presents strategies used to face the problem of a limited amount of data, as well as important challenges and research directions.

Abstract Pre-trained Transformer-based models have achieved state-of-the-art performance for various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. However, these models often have billions of parameters, and thus are too resource- hungry and computation-intensive to suit low- capability devices or applications with strict latency requirements. One potential remedy for this is model compression, which has attracted considerable research attention. Here, we summarize the research in compressing Transformers, focusing on the especially popular BERT model. In particular, we survey the state of the art in compression for BERT, we clarify the current best practices for compressing large-scale Transformer models, and we provide insights into the workings of various methods. Our categorization and analysis also shed light on promising future research directions for achieving lightweight, accurate, and generic NLP models.

In this paper we report about QBFEVAL'10, the seventh in a series of events established with the aim of assessing the advancements in reasoning about quantified Boolean formulas (QBFs). The paper discusses the results obtained and the evaluation setup, from the criteria used to select QBF instances down to the hardware infrastructure. We also discuss the current state-of-the-art in light of past challenges and we envision future research directions that are motivated by the results of QBFEVAL'10.

The aim of this study is to analyze the convergence of art, design and craftsmanship for the creation of glass objects within the context of the 20th and 21st centuries, in the Portuguese panorama. In the late 1920s and 1950s, Portuguese artists established a growing collaboration with the glass industry situated in the Marinha Grande region and started to produce their work alongside glassblowers. The relationship between artists and craftsmen progressively evolved, influencing the evolution of glass design in Portugal. In the last decades, glass factories have tried to enhance the excellence of their products by appointing designers to develop more elaborate concepts for glass pieces, as well as to improve the quality of the material. This essay will answer questions regarding the relationship and boundaries between design and craft in the creation of glass objects in the context of the state of the art of Portuguese glass design, related to the production of glassblowing glass and the region of Marinha Grande due to its historical importance. A case study will be presented regarding the brand MGlass and the new glass designers in the region.

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study that evaluates six state-of-the-art sentiment analysis tools on five public datasets, based on the quality of predictive results in the presence of semantically equivalent documents, i.e., how consistent existing tools are in predicting the polarity of documents based on paraphrased text. We observe that sentiment analysis tools exhibit intra-tool inconsistency , which is the prediction of different polarity for semantically equivalent documents by the same tool, and inter-tool inconsistency , which is the prediction of different polarity for semantically equivalent documents across different tools. We introduce a heuristic to assess the data quality of an augmented dataset and a new set of metrics to evaluate tool inconsistencies. Our results indicate that tool inconsistencies is still an open problem, and they point towards promising research directions and accuracy improvements that can be obtained if such inconsistencies are resolved.

Technology is starting to play a key role in cities’ urban sustainability plans. This is because new technologies can provide them with robust solutions that are of benefit to citizens. Cities aim to incorporate smart systems in their industrial, infrastructural, educational, and social activities. A Smart City is managed with intelligent technologies which allow improving the quality of the services offered to citizens and make all processes more efficient. However, the Smart City concept is fairly recent. The ideas that it encompasses have not yet been consolidated due to the large number of fields and technologies that fit under this concept. All of this led to confusion about the definition of a Smart City and this is evident in the literature. This article explores the literature that addresses the topic of Smart Cities; a comprehensive analysis of the concept and existing platforms is performed. We gain a clear understanding of the services that a Smart City must provide, the technology it should employ for the development of these services, and the scope that this concept covers. Moreover, the shortcomings and needs of Smart Cities are identified and a model for designing a Smart City architecture is proposed. In addition, three case studies have been proposed: the first is a simulator to study the implementation of various services and technologies, the second case study to manage incidents that occur in a Smart City, and the third case study to monitor the deployment of large-scale sensors in a Smart City.
