Most of the elderly citizens are either living by themselves or locked up at home when the rest of the family members go to work. Health of the elderly deteriorates gradually with age, but people fail to notice these changes in everyday life. The elderly are at risk of not receiving attention immediately in the case of emergencies. Internet of things can be used to alert family members and health personnel immediately when an abnormality in the elderly person's health is sensed to prevent discovery of illness at an irrecoverable stage. Internet of things can monitor parameters like heart pulse rate, body temperature, body movement, position, and location, and raise an alert to take immediate preventive actions. Making this system portable is one of the most necessary requirements because it will be worn by the user. That introduces various conditions in itself. For instance, the system should not disturb the patient or be heavy.

Health of the elderly deteriorate gradually with age, but we fail to notice these changes in everyday life. The elderly are at a risk of not being attended immediately in case of emergencies. Internet of Things can be used to alert the family members and health personnel immediately when an abnormality in their health is sensed to prevent such emergencies. It can be used to detect abnormalities in the health condition by monitoring the parameters like heart pulse rate, body temperature, body movement and position, location and raise an alert to take immediate preventive actions. This approach has led to an evolution in the world of medicine. It allows for prognosis of diseases at a much earlier stage using this proactive paradigm compared to the existing retroactive diagnose-and-treat reactive paradigm. It also helps to personalize the treatment options available to meet the specific needs of the person. The early detection of abnormalities in the health condition can help in slowing down the progression of the condition and have everything under control. This article highlights the opportunities and challenges in utilizing the power of Internet of Things for remote healthcare of elderly and chronic patients.

We have developed a health monitoring system for elderly people living alone. We monitored the in-house movements of eight subjects (average age 81 years) by placing infrared sensors in each room of their homes. Because their movements were unrestricted, monitoring could last longer than other forms of monitoring. Continuous monitoring was performed for 80 months in total. We found that each subject had a specific pattern of movements. We estimated their health condition by comparing the duration of stays in specific rooms, such as the lavatory, with previously recorded data. If after analysis an unusual state was detected, we informed the family of the incident. Final decisions should be made by the family members, not automatically by computer software. For example, after contacting the subject or a neighbour by telephone, family members could call for an ambulance or arrange a visit by a doctor or home help. Thus, this system reduced anxiety for both the elderly subjects living alone and their family members.

Prevalence of chronic diseases and disability will increase at the advancing age. In the future, the need for the caregiver will increase. Only few studies about the expectations of the elderly towards the sociodemographics status of the caregiver found. Unfulfilled expectations of the elderly towards their caregivers may cause both health and non-health issues. The purpose of this study was to explore the elderly expectations of the caregiver’s sociodemographic preferences. A qualitative study was carried out to 7 elderly aged 64–77 years old from July to August 2018 in Bandung city. These elderly selected from 7 integrated care posts (pos pembinaan terpadu/posbindu) that met the inclusion criteria: aged 60 years old and above; male or female; capable of communicating adeptly, and no dementia by undergoing the mini-mental state examination (MMSE). A one-on-one interview was conducted at the residence of the elderly using an interview guide consisted of several opened questions related to the caregiver’s sociodemographic preferences. A content analysis was carried out. This study discovered that the elderly preferred their family members or relatives whom they can trust to become their caregivers (their children and grandchildren). Most of these elderly also preferred daughters who live with them and has a decent income. If the family members could not become their caregiver then their neighbor or a community volunteer/cadre, they knew well, and trust to be their caregiver. It concluded that the elderly prefer their daughters who live with them and has a decent income to be their caregivers.

Malaysia is expected to become the elder country by the year 2035 and elderly caregiving is the main issue in the old population. Although the elderly are expected to live for a longer period, half of them are in an unhealthy condition, sick and suffering from the disease. Thus, they need to be taken care of for a longer period formally or informally. However, most of the family members have chosen to take care of the elderly informally. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to identify the problems that are faced by the caregivers on long-term caregiving of the elderly. Informal caregivers need to encounter a financial problem, affected health, difficulty in determining the caregiving rotation and lack of knowledge or information pertaining to elderly caregiving. Hence, the roles of caregiving in the long-term period could burden and affect the informal caregivers’ well-being.

This chapter reports how interaction between family members and caregivers as perceived by family members could be improved via context-aware, imperceptible internet of things (IoT)-based solutions. The qualitative study focused on investigating experiences of the family members and the communication between caretakers in sheltered accommodation. Interviews including both open and closed questions revealed that there is high need for improving the communication, adding to the sparse earlier knowledge. The study revealed that the family members were willing to adopt an application to improve the communication that currently was experienced as too limited and vague. The results provide a fruitful base for further actions to improve communication between family members and professional caretakers.

In this world with exponentially increasing fitness risks, the authors are proposing an Internet of Things (IoT) based device named Wireless Health Monitoring System (WHMS), to put patients' thinking at ease. We are dwelling in a world which is no longer viable for a doctor to keep a watch over a patient's indispensable parameters all the time. This device is helpful for aged people staying alone at home, people dwelling on hills, pregnant females anywhere, and for busy people who cannot often contact a doctor. A health practitioner, some distance away from the patient, needs to understand his heart rate and body temperature of the physique to begin preliminary treatment. Keeping this as a preluding landmark, the authors are proposing an embedded gadget which can measure the rate of heart beat and body temperature, and keep the statistics on the cloud server for the doctor to determine the next course of action.

Background: Death is one of life’s few certainties and a universal experience for all individuals. When death occurs there is usually an impact on the family and friends of the deceased, the magnitude of which often depends on whether death was expected or unexpected. The grieving experiences of the elderly are rarely discussed. The purpose of this study was to describe experiences of grief and reactions to the death of family members amongst the elderly. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to obtain data from elderly women in Ga-Rankuwa, Gauteng, to gain insight into the experiences of grief in this age group. Purposive sampling was used to conduct in-depth interviews with 10 elderly women whose family members had died. The data were analysed using a thematic approach. Results: The findings show that the elderly were exposed to multiple deaths of family members. The participants helplessly experienced with sorrow the death of family members, had experienced death anxiety, and relinquished control to God in terms of deaths. Conclusions: The response to death of the elderly affirms that it cannot be assumed that multiple death experiences establish their readiness or ability to handle these experiences and to grieve successfully. It can be concluded that the grieving process of the elderly is not different from any other age group and that they will also require the type of support and assistance considered for younger persons in times of grieving.

Since they are isolated in their later years, most people are still forgotten and powerless in medical crises. To deal with this, we've devised a potential Remote Health Monitoring and Warning System (RHMAS). Heart attacks in the elderly are linked with complications such as body temperature changes, elevated blood pressure, profuse sweating, and an abnormal cardiac rhythm, among others. Our approach is to include sophisticated sensors capable of detecting and tracking these signs in order to warn family members, kin, family practitioner, and health care in the event of an emergency. Since most gadgets for this reason are wired, a wireless interface does not obstruct the user's movement. The suggested device includes a Photo-Plethysmography (PPG) dependent pulse sensor to identify arrhythmia, a temperature sensor to continuously track their body temperature, a pressure sensor to sense blood pressure ranges, and a heartbeat sensor. If the controlled data deviates from the nominal body state, an ESP 8266 module can give a message to the next of kin. If the tracked data hits emergency thresholds, health providers can send a message to her kin as well as a buzzer to a consent user.

This study was undertaken with the aim to validate the assumption in JEM’s Theory on Intergenerational Visits to the Elderly, which states that Intergenerational visits promote socialization, that spirals into family solidarity, quality time shared; that affords the elderly parents more meanings, purposes, significance in their lives, the feeling of successfully aging, and make family relationship tighter everytime it happens. It is also to come up with narrative materials from the experiences of the informant-elderly during intergenerational visits, together with children, grandchildren, friends and relatives, before, during, and after the visitation. The method used is narrative inquiry. Interview schedules were used both in Filipino and English. There were recorded interviews and later transcriptions of them, then a story was woven entitled: “The Elderly and Life’s Channels: The Threads of Life”. There were six parents interviewed equal to six families. The characters in the narrations are representatives from these families. Findings proved that, “intergenerational visits to the elderly”, is a key factor to improve the social relationship between children and parents and between and among parents and children. Other findings were on the smooth and rough (conflicts) events in the family, but the latter mended by the faithful observance of intergenerational visits, which serve as the knot that binds family members together, because the former promotes socialization. It is recommended that Intergenerational visits be included in the yearly activities for the elderly people or the senior citizens, by their respective family members, often or even far in-between.
