New Media Research in Business and Management Fields

Recently, research on new media has grown rapidly. However, business and management research categories that focus on new media have not received much scholarly attention. To improve our understanding of the structure of this research area within other disciplines, this chapter focuses on revealing the bibliometric structure of the documents. An overview is provided in terms of the documents that are located under the business and management categories of Web of Science. This chapter reviews 62 documents with a focus of revealing descriptive outputs. Accordingly, the authors and the most relevant approaches are mapped within the field. The analysis identifies top contributors and their field of studies. Also, conceptual and intellectual structures are revealed. Findings uncover research topics and theoretical foundations of the field and how certain conversations pursue them through different conceptualizations. Building on the results, future research opportunities are also identified.

This paper aims at examining how overtourism and tourismphobia are being approached as emergent research topics in current tourism literature. It conducts an analysis of 154 documents, indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection and Scopus databases. The study follows a quantitative and qualitative approach, with the support of VOSviewer and HistCite softwares for a descriptive content analysis. The analysis focuses on highlighting important aspects in terms of the most frequent publication sources (authors and journals); co-citation, as well as dimensions and research streams; methodologies used; results obtained; and implications for future research. The literature review unveiled that the concepts of overtourism and tourismphobia are usually related to destinations’ development, negative impacts, and tourism policies and regulation. Results show that, although tourism excesses and conflicts have been studied for long, ‘overtourism’ and ‘tourismphobia’ have become usual terms, mainly within the past three years. Even though the adoption of the terms can be considered by some as a ‘trend’, the in-depth analysis of the topics shed light on how ‘old’ concepts can evolve to adapt to contemporary tourism issues. Further studies are needed in tracking the evolution of these topics and their implications on the future of tourism.

The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is increasingly becoming digital and more prone to cyber-attacks. Although there are several studies and standards in the cybersecurity domain, experts suggest that domain-specific studies need to be conducted to address the unique challenges faced within each of the different industries. Therefore, several cybersecurity studies have been undertaken for various industries, such as healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunication, and energy. However, this type of study is largely missing in the AEC industry due to different reasons, including lack of awareness. To address that, this study aims to (a) compare and analyze the number of cybersecurity-related documents in the AEC industry with several other industries, and (b) extract and analyze the cybersecurity-related documents data to identify potential future research trends and topics for the AEC community. The Web of Science (WOS) database, consisting of significant and influential journal publications, was used for document retrieval. VOSviewer was used to identify key research topics and trends in the cybersecurity domain and define future cybersecurity research in the AEC industry. WOS document retrieval results that compared the total number of publications corroborated the little to no attention received to cybersecurity investigation in the AEC industry. In addition, the VOSviewer analysis revealed three significant areas of research in the cybersecurity community that provide a reasonably justified roadmap for conducting cybersecurity research in the AEC industry. This study could greatly benefit the AEC research community and potential reaping benefits to the industry by creating more awareness among different stakeholders.

AbstractThe need for a better understanding of radical uncertainty might have never been greater. Ill-preparedness for natural hazards, a resurgence of serious public health concerns or illusions of control over unruly technology question the extent to which we can ‘really’ shape the world around us. Human-made crises, too, test how we routinely do things. We ask how organisations and actors within them prepare for a collapse of meaning and practise radical uncertainty. Given the breadth and depth of the region’s energy (and, as some would argue, turbulences), Asia provides a fitting context for exploring accommodation to and learning from low-probability, high-impact incidents. By reviewing the business and management research on shocks in Asia, we find that there is a strong human side to dealing with the unknown. We argue that what organisations and actors within them do prior, during and after a shock event is substantially contingent upon cultural environments. To elaborate, we discuss the role of the uncertainty avoidance dimension of national culture in dealing with shock events. We further combine this dimension with the universalism-particularism dimension to discuss future research directions. Our exploration of resultant differences in preparedness, resourcefulness and learning offers a more rounded inquiry into how Asian business actors deal with shocks.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine what are both the main theoretical basis and the recent perspectives within the organizational innovation literature. Design/methodology/approach The authors have conducted a bibliometric analysis reviewing the research on organizational innovation from 460 articles published in the period from 2007 to 2016 and indexed in the Web of Science through co-citation and bibliographical coupling analyses. Findings The clusters analysis results show that the main theoretical foundations are learning and evolution; implementation of innovation; and leadership, creativity and learning. Regarding recent perspectives, the clusters indicate studies on core concepts, knowledge and capability, learning for resource development and human resources for innovation. Originality/value This study organizes the knowledge basis for future research on organizational innovation, and, unlike most literature reviews, this study provides the current trends on the topic and presents a comprehensive research agenda.

The main purpose of study is to examine the researches published in the field of waste management and recycling in tourism science at the period of 1980–2019 with bibliometric perspective and to determine the waste management research area trends in this discipline in the last 39 years. In this context, the Web of Science database was searched under the title of waste management and recycling within the scope of ‘hospitality, leisure and tourism’. In the research, number of publications, publication languages, types of publications, journal co-citation network, author co-citation network, document co-citation network and co-occurring author keywords were analyzed. Social network analysis was used to test purposes. According to the results, it can be said that interest in the field in the context of waste management in tourism publications has increased significantly since 2018. Studies are mainly articles. According to the results, it can be said that Gosling is a pioneer in both waste management and recycling in tourism science. If found that the most commonly used keywords in waste management are sustainability, tourism and food waste. It is determined that the most used words in the field of recycling are tourism, heritage and green hotel.

Ongoing works by early pioneers in the business and management education online and hybrid learning area, such as Ben J. Arbaugh, have helped draw interest into this research area. This set of articles should further grow that interest.

Ponsel cerdas semakin banyak digunakan untuk menonton subscription video-on-demand. Tingkat adopsi aktivitas ini pun sangat tinggi di kalangan kaum milenial di Indonesia. Ini memunculkan pertanyaan mengapa khalayak semakin terbiasa menonton SVOD di ponsel cerdas meski memiliki keterbatasan audiovisual dibandingkan televisi, laptop atau komputer. Penelitian ini bertujuan melihat apa kebutuhan-kebutuhan spesifik yang terpenuhi ketika khalayak mengonsumsi konten subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) melalui ponsel cerdas. Berlandaskan teori uses and gratifications, penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan strategi grounded theory. Berdasarkan wawancara dengan enam informan, ditemukan bahwa khalayak memiliki tipologi kebutuhan yakni informasi, mengisi waktu, pengalaman terkustomisasi dan media displacement. Muncul tipologi yang mengalami ekspansi yakni hiburan hedonistik/eudaimonik, pindah waktu/tempat, kenyamanan/relaksasi, dan pengalihan/pengalaman imersif. Sementara muncul tipologi yang belum ditemukan dalam penelitian sebelumnya, yaitu menonton maraton. Direkomendasikan untuk mengoperasionaliasikan tipologi-tipologi yang ditemukan secara kuantittif untuk penelitian selanjutnya. Smartphones are increasingly used to access videos, including subscription video-on-demand services. This is especially true among millennials, who are the primary adopters. This raises the question of why millennials watch SVOD through their smartphones when other wide-screened devices offer better audiovisual quality. This research aims to reveal the motivations satisfied by using uses and gratification theory through qualitative approach and grounded theory strategy.  Based on in-depth interviews of six informants, we found classical UG typologies, namely Information and Passing Time, and typologies recurring in new media research, which are customized experienced and media displacement. The study also produced expanded typologies, including hedonistic/eudaimonic entertainment, time/place-shifting, comfort/relaxation, and diversion/immersive experience. Lastly, binge-watching was discovered to be an emergent typology. As this research analyzes data from one informant, the results cannot be generalized. Operationalizing these typologies by using a quantitative approach is recommended for future research.

Purpose This paper offers a “content analysis of metadata, titles, and abstracts” (CAMTA) method underpinned by a newly evolved metadata, title, abstract, introduction, methodology, results, analysis, and discussion (M-TAIMRAD) Framework. Design/methodology/approach Draws on innovations of content analysis from the field of health- care to offer a pragmatic and transparent method for conducting rigorous and valid research within the field of business and management. Findings Replicable and valid guidelines for conducting the CAMTA method are offered, including an illustration. This is followed by a critical examination of the potential applications and benefits of the method to the field of business and management research. Originality/value The CAMTA method enables researchers to assimilate and synthesise metadata, titles and abstracts as a means of identifying grounds for future research and theory development. This will help to advance the field and subsequently benefit the wider readership including fellow academics, practitioners and policymakers. The flexibility of the CAMTA method means that it can be used as a stand-alone method or combined as part of a mixed-methods approach.

This study presents a bibliometric review of creative tourism literature aimed at understanding the main research topics and approaches, theoretical foundations, and the most recent areas of investigation. Sixty-four articles on creative tourism were selected and analyzed using co-citation analysis, content analysis, and bibliographic coupling. Findings reveal that creative tourism is a well-defined field of studies with three main research topics; namely, Tourist Experience and Co-Creation, Creativity in Tourism, and Cultural Tourism and Events. Furthermore, several theoretical approaches can be applied to a different set of empirical contexts, among which co-creation and experience economy play a major role. An analysis of the most recent publications identifies five promising research trends and allows some conclusions about the opportunities for future research to be drawn.
