Family engagement in the education of young children with disabilities is complex and can be overwhelming, especially for those from marginalized backgrounds. Subsequently, voices of families of color from low socioeconomic status are frequently silenced. Two issues that often affect this silencing are cultural differences and conflicting educational views. While we know the importance of establishing multi-disciplinary teams that support and encourage engagement of families from marginalized backgrounds, this seldom occurs. The present case study demonstrates how utilizing a partnership development process supported successful engagement in the multi-disciplinary team approach for the Blakemores, a family of color from a low socioeconomic background.

This chapter examines how residents in Beyoğlu — the most diverse district in the Turkish city of Istanbul — designate others, and the effects of this designated ‘otherness’ on social cohesion in this area. It shows how residents in Beyoğlu use a variety of attributes to define others, most notably socioeconomic and occupational attributes, or whether they are established or new residents or come from the same hometown. Ethnic and cultural differences are not so important, although the aforementioned attributes are strongly linked to certain ethnic and cultural categories since most new residents are migrants with a low socioeconomic status and usually of Kurdish ethnicity. A majority of the respondents regard living with others as something positive because of the possibility of getting to know different people and learning about their cultures. Still, the rapidly changing demographic composition and character of the district is seen as a threat to local social cohesion.

AbstractObjective:To identify the key features of a nutrition resource that are important to adolescents of a low socioeconomic status (SES).Design:Structured interviews were conducted to explore participants’ preferences relating to the features of a nutrition resource. Thematic framework analysis was used to determine key themes, subthemes and concepts from the data.Setting:Streetsport activity sessions, north-east of Scotland.Participants:Eighteen adolescents aged 12–17 years from a low socioeconomic background.Results:The overarching themes identified were barriers and facilitators to engagement with a nutrition resource. Adolescents expressed a preference for an app, and this was mainly attributed to convenience and low cost. There was also an emphasis on the integral role social media has in their lives. Aesthetics was a facilitator for both male and female participants, with a particular focus on weight loss. Behaviour change support, including reminders, access to simple recipes and adopting a ‘small change approach’, were identified as possible facilitators, whereas cost, environmental influences, and existing eating habits were identified as possible barriers to engaging with a nutrition resource.Conclusions:A number of subthemes, including aesthetics, cost and convenience, which have previously been reported in adolescents with a higher SES, were prominent in our research. The present study contributes to insights relating to behaviour change tools that should be considered when developing a nutrition resource targeting disadvantaged adolescents. Further research focusing on how mobile phone technology and social media can be utilised to support dietary behaviour change in low SES adolescents is recommended.

In health-promoting interventions, a main difficulty is that low socioeconomic status (SES) groups especially seem to experience barriers to participation. To overcome this barrier, the current study focused on the success factors and obstacles in the process of supporting low-SES families in becoming partners, while carrying out small-scale activities based on their needs. A retrospective case study design was used to construct a timeline of activities organized by and together with low-SES families based on mainly qualitative data. Next, key events were grouped into the four attributes of the resilience activation framework: human, social, political, and economic capital. The following key lessons were defined: professionals should let go of work routines and accommodate the talents of the families, start doing, strive for small successes; create a functional social network surrounding the families, maintaining professional support over time as back-up; and create collaborative governance to build upon accessibility, transparency and trust among the low-SES families. Continuous and flexible ‘navigating the middle’ between bottom-up and top-down approaches was seen as vital in the partnership process between low-SES families and local professional partners. Constant feedback loops made the evaluation points clear, which supported both families and professionals to enhance their partnership.

Sure Start is a UK government initiative addressing social exclusion in local communities through a multi-disciplinary team approach. The Early Years Librarian can be a significant team member in responding to child development and early years literacy. A case study of the Wakefield district investigates the role of the Early Years Librarians in responding to the government agenda. Partnership work and focusing of provision based on parental consultation are key issues.Le projet « Sure Start » est une initiative du gouvernement du Royaume-Uni abordant le problème de l’exclusion sociale dans les communautés locales, à travers l’approche d’une équipe multidisciplinaire. Les bibliothécaires « Early Years » peuvent jouer un rôle important dans le développement de l’enfant et dans la première phase de culture informationnelle. Une étude de cas dans la circonscription de Wakefield explore le rôle des bibliothécaires « Early Years » œuvrant pour le plan d’action du gouvernement. Le travail de partenariat et l’utilisation de dispositions basées sur la consultation parentale sont des questions-clés.

AbstractLow socioeconomic status (SES) background has been identified as a risk for several mental disorders. However evidence regarding SES and the developmental course of personality disorder (PD) has not been addressed. Nor is it clear whether an SES relationship to PD symptom course may be attributable to known associated risks. Further, specificity of such relationships to a particular PD diagnostic pattern independent of comorbidity with other PD or with depression has not been investigated. Data are from a general population studied longitudinally between ages 10 and 36 in four assessment waves. Effects of SES-associated risks on the level of symptoms of schizotypal and borderline disorders are estimated and compared to effects on depressive symptoms. Low family SES had robust modest independent effects on both PDs over the entire age span despite substantial cumulative effects of trauma history, stressful recent life events, IQ, poor parenting, and comorbid symptoms. SES effects on depressive symptoms were generally absent, but a small “protective” effect of low SES appeared when comorbidity with PD symptoms was taken into account. Cumulatively, these risks account for developmental failures of substantial magnitude and consequence, marking the importance of understanding the remaining mechanisms of SES effects and programmatic implications for minimizing associated risk.

The relationship between dental caries and sense of coherence (SOC) has not been substantiated in children and adolescents, particularly among those with a low socioeconomic status. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between SOC and dental caries in schoolchildren from a low socioeconomic background. A random sample of 356 8- to 14-year-old schoolchildren enrolled in public schools from the poorest region of Santa Maria, a southern city in Brazil, was selected. Dental examinations were performed to assess dental plaque and dental caries (DMF-S and dmf-s indexes). The children’s SOC was assessed using a validated Brazilian version of the SOC-13 scale. Socioeconomic, demographic, and behavioral data were collected from parents using a questionnaire. Multilevel Poisson regression analysis was used following a hierarchical approach to investigate the association between the SOC and DMF-T + dmf-t mean. Children whose mothers had studied for 8 years or less (RR 1.30; 95% CI 1.08–1.57) and children with dental plaque (RR 1.29; 95% CI 1.06–1.58) presented with higher DMF-T scores than their counterparts (p < 0.05). A higher household income (RR 0.66; 95% CI 0.51–0.84) and greater SOC scores (RR 0.71, 95% CI 0.56–0.90) were associated with lower DMF-T in children (p < 0.05). Children’s SOC seems to be a relevant protective psychosocial factor for dental caries experience in socially vulnerable children.

This paper reports an investigation into aspects of syntax in the written compositions of school children. A total of 240 pupils was assigned to cells of equal numbers in a three-way analysis of variance design utilizing grade (4), sex (2), and socioeconomic status (2), with I.Q. as a covariate. Each pupil wrote three compositions, answered a questionnaire about home background, and completed a short Test of Cognitive Development. Contrary to hypotheses, pupils from low socioeconomic status homes showed no marked deficit on variables of complexity, length, and variety in written syntax when compared with pupils from high socioeconomic status homes. Further, stage of cognitive development, operationalized as concrete or formal thinking, did not interact with socioeconomic background in affecting maturity of written syntax. Implications for Bernstein's theories of language codes are discussed.

Whereas the effect of sex and age on dream recall have been studied widely, socioeconomic status has rarely been investigated. However, two studies reported that higher socioeconomic status was related to greater frequency of dream recall. In the present sample of 612 Chinese students from three different schools, one elite (high socioeconomic status), one rural (low socioeconomic status) and one intermediate, analysis of variance indicated no significant association between frequency of dream recall and socioeconomic status. Researchers could investigate whether “dream socialization,” e.g., encouragement of a child to remember his dreams, depends on socioeconomic background, whether these processes are mediated by culture.
