The objective of this chapter is to evaluate the scenario in which mobile payments are currently inserted to offer those interested in developing research in this area a broader understanding of the mobile payment ecosystem and its evolution. A study by Dahlberg, Guo, and Ondrus revealed that researchers are focusing on the same topics (especially consumer adoption and technological aspects) with a limited accumulation of foreground. Therefore, it is believed that the limited scientific literature regarding the history of mobile payment and its development in recent years surely makes it difficult to generate research on other perspectives. In this way, this chapter presents the general scenario of financial technologies, explaining how these changes completely changed the global economic scenario and gave rise to innovations in financial solutions for companies and consumers. The authors conclude the article by giving some recommendations for the diffusion of this payment system and for future investigations of mobile payment systems.

Trust plays a key role in the acceptance of a new payment system and is at the heart of any method of payment. Companies have been using mobile payments for over a decade. Because of the high uncertainty and security issues accompanying mobile payment, developing trust of users is critical to enable their adoption and use. Customers will use mobile payments as long as they have trust in this relatively new mode of payment together with dependence on its services and applications. In this context, recent studies indicate that trust in mobile payment systems (MPS) is not uniform among users despite the fast development of mobile technology and the new modes of payment. The aim of this paper is to provide a number of suggestions to assist developing greater trust in the mobile networks and provide customers with a secure and befitting experience that will influence mobile payment adoption in turn

The aim of this chapter is to explore the determinants of mobile payment from the merchants' perspective through a bibliographical review and a qualitative and quantitative study to determine the factors that encourage or obstruct the use of mobile payment tools by merchants. This chapter presents a qualitative and quantitative study on the adoption of mobile payment from the merchants' perspective based on a previous literature review. The results reveal the main barriers in the adoption of the new mobile payment systems (users' lack of knowledge, trust in the payment system, cost of the payment system adoption, and lack of security) as well as the main advantages perceived by merchants (convenience and speed, security, and higher turnover). According to these results, several proposals are put forward for each participant in the adoption process to promote the use of mobile payments as well as some future lines of research.

Payments are an inherent element of economic activity (León and Ortega 2018). However, the evolution of payment instruments and the way individuals and businesses make daily payments has undergone enormous change in human history, particularly due to main innovations in payment systems in last decades (Gandhi 2016). The last innovation in payment system concerns mobile payment. The development of mobile payments market can have a positive impact on economic growth (Leon and Rodriguez 2012). Although the Polish market of mobile payments is in the initial phase of development, it is one of the pioneering and leading in Europe and globally. The main purpose of this article is to analyze, which feature (convenience, speed, availability, ease of use, safety) of mobile payments could be the most important for users from Poland.

Current developments in information technology and communications, as well as the significant transformations the business world is being forced to make, are generating an opportunity for widespread acceptance of mobile payments. The present research analyzes the intention to use the Apple Pay mobile payment system, as well as contextualizing and evaluating the different antecedents of its use. To carry out the research, 539 users were invited to respond to an online questionnaire, and an analysis of structural equation modeling was used. The results indicate that perceived value is the variable that most influences the intention to use the proposed payment system, followed by perception of utility and risk. This work has important implications for companies in the sector.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the factors which influence consumer adoption of mobile payments. It also proposes strategic initiatives including integrated marketing communications to enhance and promote consumer adoption of such a mode of payments. Design/methodology/approach This paper focuses on the case of an emerging economy, Vietnam. Findings The key motivators of using mobile payment services include perceived usefulness, convenience, promotional offers, and social approval. In contrast, major barriers to consumer adoption of this mode of payment are lack of trust, limited opportunities for usage, complexity, and habits associated with cash payment. Practical implications Mobile payment service providers and their partners should make every effort to improve their consumers’ experience. Their marketing communication strategies should incorporate various consumer contact points such as the internet, social media, point-of-purchase communications, TV commercials, and product placement and endorsement. Originality/value This paper is among the first of its kind which provides insights on consumer adoption of mobile payments in Vietnam. Hence, it would be of interest to consumers and also to key stakeholders such as mobile payment providers, financial institutions, retailers, telecommunication companies, and policymakers.

To be effectively deployed, a mobile payment (m-payment) system must be provided by e-merchants and accepted by e-consumers. Although the problem of acceptance of m-payment systems by e-consumers has been widely researched, there are few studies about what actually motivates e-merchants to adopt and deploy these systems in their businesses in the first place. The goal of this research was to discover the behavioral intentions of e-merchants to adopt and deploy an m-payment system. The interviews approach was applied to 347 e-merchants randomly selected from among the whole population of 47,457 independent business units selling goods on-line in Poland. The PLS-SEM method was applied to determine the relationship between variables. Unexpectedly, perceived risk was not a significant factor influencing e-merchants' intention to adopt an m-payment system. The e-merchants’ behavioral intention was significantly impacted by the expected usefulness, perceived ease of deployment and use, perceived cost and price, and hedonic motivation.
