Incivility and Counterproductive Work Behavior

This research aims to extend the literature on stress by exploring the relationship between incivility and employees' counterproductive work behavior (CWB). We investigate the mediating role of psychological distress (PD) to understand the relationship of family and workplace incivility with CWB. The study also evaluates the moderation effect of emotional regulation between incivility and PD. Analysis of three-wave lagged data (N=328), collected from bank employees in Pakistan, indicates that PD mediates the effect of family and workplace incivility on CWB and emotional regulation moderates the effect of family and workplace incivility on PD. Our findings highlight the fact that emotional regulation and PD are important mechanisms in the incivility–CWB relationship. The inclusion of these two constructs is a key to understanding the relationships among family incivility, workplace incivility, and work-related outcomes. The paper concludes with a discussion of theoretical and practical implications.

The services sector is an emerging sector that needs extensive research that can be helpful in managing employees’ emotions. This study aims to examine the effect of perceived organizational support on emotional labor with the mediating role of emotional intelligence. Questionnaire survey method was adapted and data were collected from 370 employees of telecommunication sector through Simple Random Sampling Technique. Hypotheses were tested and analyzed by AMOS. Results showed that POS positively affects deep Acting but has a negative impact on surface acting. Results enlightened that emotional intelligence significantly mediates the relationship between perceived organizational support and emotional labor. The study also revealed the significant relationship of emotional labor and counterproductive work behavior. Surface acting positively and significantly effect on counterproductive work behavior whereas deep acting influence negatively on counterproductive work behavior. Findings also divulged that the relationship of emotional labor and counterproductive work behavior is significantly moderated by emotional intelligence.

This study examines the mediating role of job satisfaction on the effect of distributive, procedural and interactional justice on counterproductive work behavior. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 110 service company employees in Indonesia as respondents. This study uses primary data collected through a questionnaire. Respondents are given the answer choice using the Likert Scale which consists of 5 scores namely scores 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Data analysis using Partial Least Squares (PLS). Several respondents and management were purposely selected as key informants for in-depth interviews to explore the relationship mechanism between distributive, procedural and interactional justice, job satisfaction and counterproductive work behavior. The results of the study found that distributive, procedural and interactional justice had a positive and significant effect on job satisfaction, distributive justice had a positive and not significant effect on counterproductive work behavior, procedural justice had a negative and significant effect on counterproductive work behavior, interactional justice had a negative and not significant effect on counterproductive work behavior, job satisfaction has a negative and insignificant effect on counterproductive work behavior and job satisfaction does not significantly mediate the effect of distributive, procedural and interactional justice on counterproductive work behavior. This study provides empirical support for the influence of distributive, procedural, interactional justice on job satisfaction and counterproductive work behavior. This study also provides evidence of the effect of justice directly and through job satisfaction on counterproductive work behavior. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation in the relationship of early maladaptive schemas with spouse abuse. Methods: In this descriptive-correlational study, 324 married adults (226 females, 98 males) living in Tehran, Iran in 2017 were selected using a convenience sampling technique. They completed the revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS-2), the Young Scale Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF), and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). Collected data were analyzed using Pearson correlation test and Structural Equations Modeling (SEM) in AMOS software. Results: The results of SEM showed a direct significant path from early maladaptive schemas to cognitive emotional regulation, and from cognitive emotional regulation to spouse abuse. There were also significant indirect paths from the first, second, and third domains of early maladaptive schemas to spouse abuse mediated by negative cognitive emotion regulation strategies with a path coefficients of 0.13, 0.16, and 0.13, respectively. The final structural model was a good-fitting model (X2/dF=1.595, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.045, Comparative Fit Index =0.953). Conclusion: The relationship between early maladaptive schemas and spouse abuse is not linear; it is mediated by cognitive emotion regulation.

PurposeOrganizations are facing several challenges in the current challenging business environment. The current study explores how counterproductive work behavior (CWB) affects bio-medical companies' firm performance in Pakistan. The study considers the mediating role of organizational culture and its impact on CWB and a firm's performance.Design/methodology/approachData were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. For data collection, 300 questionnaires were distributed among employees working in biomedical companies. Statistical analysis such as descriptive statistics, Pearson moment correlation and structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques was used to analyze the study variable's relationship and its effect on the firm's performance.FindingsThe study results revealed that CWB and organizational culture significantly influence firm performance directly and indirectly. Moreover, organizational culture partially mediates the relationship between CWB and companies' performance.Originality/valueThe current study plays a significant role in the firm's policy directions. There are limited research and information accessible to biomedical firms in Pakistan. Counterproductive job habits wind up becoming something that significantly affects the firm performance. This research adds to human resource management, corporate management and the business strategy literature.

PurposeInnovations are imperative for organizational growth and sustainability. This study focuses on the employees' innovative behavior, a source of organizational innovations, which has received substantial attention from the researchers. Based on the psychological empowerment theory, the study exposes the effect of the various dimensions of public service motivation (PSM) on employees' innovative behavior (IB) in public sector institutions especially in the context of developing countries such as Pakistan. Moreover, the study also investigates the mediating role of psychological empowerment (PSE) between the dimensions of PSM and IB.Design/methodology/approachThis study used the cross-sectional research design. By using random sampling, the adapted survey questionnaires were used to collect data from 346 faculty members of public sector universities located in provincial capitals of Pakistan. A partial least square–structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) tool was used to assess the proposed hypotheses through SMART-PLS software.FindingsResults revealed that attraction to policymaking (APM), compassion (COM), self-sacrifice (SS) have a significant impact on employees' PSE and their innovative behavior, while the relationship of commitment to the public interest (CPI) with PSE and IB was found insignificant. Moreover, PSE partially mediated the relationship between PSM dimensions and employees' IB.Originality/valueThere was a scarcity of research on IB especially in public sector institutions such as academia. This study theoretically contributed to the literature by providing a refined picture in assessing the proposed relationship of the constructs. This is also one of the original studies that examine the relationship between the dimensions of PSM and IB.
