Implementing a Pervasive Real-Time Intelligent System for Tracking Critical Events with Intensive Care Patients

Nowadays, it is increasingly important to utilize intelligent systems to support the decision making process (DMP) in challenging areas such as Intensive Medicine. In Intensive Care Units (ICU), some of the biggest challenges relate both to the number and the different types of available data sources. Even though in such a setting the values for some variables are easy to collect, data collection is still performed manually in particular instances. In order to improve the DMP in ICU, a Pervasive Intelligent Decision Support System, called INTCare was deployed in the ICU of Centro Hospitalar do Porto in Portugal. This system altered the way information is collected and presented. Moreover, the tracking system deployed as a specific module of INTCare – Electronic Nursing Record (ENR) is made accessible anywhere and anytime. The system allows for the calculation of the critical events regarding five variables that are typically monitored in an ICU. Specifically, the INTCare tracking system characterizes a grid that shows the events by type and duration, empowers a warning system to alert the doctors and promotes intuitive graphics that allow care providers to follow the patient care journey. User acceptance was measured through a questionnaire designed in accordance with the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and results of implementing the INTCare tracking system, and its interface are reported.

The process of deploy a technology in critical services need to be very careful planned and processed. As an example it is the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In the ICU the patients are in critically ill conditions and there are not available time to make experiences or to develop incomplete systems. With the objective to improve the implementation process, the same should be accompanied in order to understand the environment and user behaviour. In this case and with the goal to evaluate the implementation process, an assessment model was applied to a real system called INTCare. INTCare is a Pervasive Intelligent Decision Support System (PIDSS). It was deployed in the ICU of Centro Hospitalar do Porto and was evaluated using the Technology Acceptance Model 3 (TAM). This assessment was made using the four constructs proposed by the TAM and a questionnaire-based approach guided by the Delphi Methodology. The results obtained so far show that although the users are satisfied with the offered information recognizing this importance, they demand for a faster system. This work present the main results achieved and suggest one way to follow when some technology is deployed in an environment like is ICU.

Usability of software applications is a key to success of any system and the technology is best care because it is not susceptible to forget or to damage. The main aim of the proposed system application is to help two important categories of the society they are elderly and Alzheimer’s patients, these two categories shared in one recipe which is a forgetful. Proposed application gives elderly and Alzheimer’s patients an opportunity to have small memory which can help them to remember tasks, events, medications and people. It is a great opportunity to learn what makes a proposed application good. Which may contribute to the prevention of progression of the disease rapidly. In this study Technology Acceptance Model has been designed to investigate the end-user acceptance of designing Proposed Mobile Reminder System. The purpose of this study is to design a quantitative approach based on the technology acceptance model questionnaire as its primary research methodology. It utilized a quantitative approach based a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to evaluate the designing Proposed Mobile Reminder System. The related constructs for evaluation are: Perceived of Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, User Satisfaction and Attribute of Usability. All these constructs are modified to suit the context of the study. Moreover, this study outlines the details of each construct and its relevance toward the research issue. The outcome of the study represents series of approaches that will apply for checking the advantages of proposed system by helping the target groups to remember what they may forget, and helping care providers to save time and effort.

Information communication technologies bring the revolution into all business sectors, and transportation sector is not an exception. Ticketing system has changed from traditional to intelligent, which provides information and service to the consumer. In developed countries such systems are implemented and operate successfully, while in the developing countries electronic ticketing and other similar innovative solutions face specific challenges. These challenges are related to information era and changes in consumer behaviour, caused by the development of information and communication technologies. In these new conditions the motives of consumers to choose electronic ticketing has become an extremely important factor of success. Lack of integrity of consumer behaviour and technology acceptance (electronic ticketing in particular) was identified in previous scientific research, especially taking into consideration recent conditions of developing countries. The aim of this article is to evaluate the consumers’ behaviour and acceptance of intelligent systems, such as electronic ticketing, in order to identify factors, influencing and encouraging the customers to use electronic ticketing systems. In this study extended technology acceptance model with trust element was used to measure the consumer behaviour. The sample for this research has been taken from China and Pakistan populations and consists of 432 participants from both countries.


Flight deck displays that automatically adapt themselves to changing operational conditions are referred to as mission adaptive displays, or smart cockpits. A smart cockpit is an intelligent system possessing advanced reasoning capabilities. Mission Performance Aids are a particular manifestation of Mission Adaptive Displays. Mission Performance Aids fall into three categories: Precision Maneuver Guidance (PMG), Mission Performance Evaluator (MPE), and Operational Decision Making (ODM). The MPE alerts the crew to parameter exceedance. The ODM can calculate a cumulative effect with respect to two or more risk factors being encountered simultaneously. They discern all mission critical events, including escape maneuvers. Currently, this type of performance aid is not available. So this section should prove especially useful for designers of advanced intelligent systems.

Two rounds of questionnaires were distributed and compared. The work is based on a discursive evaluation of a method employed to assess a new and innovative technology (INTCare) using the four constructs of TAM3 and statistical metrics. The paper crosses the TAM3 constructs with INTCare features to produce a questionnaire to provide a better comprehension of the users' intentions. The final results are essential to validate the system and understand the user sensitivity. The paper validates a method to access technologies in critical environments and shows an example of how a questionnaire can be developed based on TAM3. It also proves the viability of using this method and advises that two rounds of questionnaires should be performed if we want to have better evidence on user satisfaction.

The article discusses the history of the development of the problem of using artificial intelligence systems in education and pedagogic. Two directions of its development are shown: “Computational Pedagogic” and “Educational Data Mining”, in which poorly studied aspects of the internal mechanisms of functioning of artificial intelligence systems in this field of activity are revealed. The main task is a problem of interface of a kernel of the system with blocks of pedagogical and thematic databases, as well as with the blocks of pedagogical diagnostics of a student and a teacher. The role of the pedagogical diagnosis as evident reflection of the complex influence of factors and reasons is shown. It provides the intelligent system with operative and reliable information on how various reasons intertwine in the interaction, which of them are dangerous at present, where recession of characteristics of efficiency is planned. All components of the teaching and educational system are subject to diagnosis; without it, it is impossible to own any pedagogical situation optimum. The means in obtaining information about students, as well as the “mechanisms” of work of intelligent systems based on innovative ideas of advanced pedagogical experience in diagnostics of the professionalism of a teacher, are considered. Ways of realization of skill of the teacher on the basis of the ideas developed by the American scientists are shown. Among them, the approaches of researchers D. Rajonz and U. Bronfenbrenner who put at the forefront the teacher’s attitude towards students, their views, intellectual and emotional characteristics are allocated. An assessment of the teacher’s work according to N. Flanders’s system, in the form of the so-called “The Interaction Analysis”, through the mechanism of fixing such elements as: the verbal behavior of the teacher, events at the lesson and their sequence is also proposed. A system for assessing the professionalism of a teacher according to B. O. Smith and M. O. Meux is examined — through the study of the logic of teaching, using logical operations at the lesson. Samples of forms of external communication of the intellectual system with the learning environment are given. It is indicated that the conclusion of the found productive solutions can have the most acceptable and comfortable form both for students and for the teacher in the form of three approaches. The first shows that artificial intelligence in this area can be represented in the form of robotized being in the shape of a person; the second indicates that it is enough to confine oneself only to specially organized input-output systems for targeted transmission of effective methodological recommendations and instructions to both students and teachers; the third demonstrates that life will force one to come up with completely new hybrid forms of interaction between both sides in the form of interactive educational environments, to some extent resembling the educational spaces of virtual reality.
