In the manufacturing industry, supply chain management is playing an important role in providing profit to the enterprise. Information that is useful in improving existing products and development of new products can be obtained from databases and ontology. The theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ) supports designers of innovative product design by searching a knowledge base. The existing TRIZ ontology supports innovative design of specific products (Flashlight) for a TRIZ ontology. The research reported in this paper aims at developing a metaontology for innovative product design that can be applied to multiple products in different domain areas. The authors applied the semantic TRIZ to a product (Smart Fan) as an interim stage toward a metaontology that can manage general products and other concepts. Modeling real-world (Smart Pen and Smart Machine) ontologies is undertaken as an evaluation of the metaontology. This may open up new possibilities to innovative product designs.

AbstractA design problem with deficient information is generally described as wicked or ill-defined. The information insufficiency leaves designers with loose settings, free environments, and a lack of strict boundaries, which provides them with more opportunities to facilitate innovation. Therefore, to capture the opportunity behind the uncertainty of a design problem, this study models an innovative design as a composite solving process, where the problem is clarified and resolved from fuzziness to satisfying solutions by interplay among design problems, knowledge, and solutions. Additionally, a triple-helix structured model for the innovative product design process is proposed based on the co-evolution of the problem, solution, and knowledge spaces, to provide designers with a distinct design strategy and method for innovative design. The three spaces interact and co-evolve through iterative mappings, including problem structuring, knowledge expansion, and solution generation. The mappings carry the information processing and decision-making activities of the design, and create the path to satisfying solutions. Finally, a case study of a reactor coolant flow distribution device is presented to demonstrate the practicability of this model and the method for innovative product design.

This paper presents an innovative product design system based on Quality Function Development (QFD) and Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ in Russian abbreviation). House of Quality (HOQ) is the core of QFD. To make QFD more practical and operable for small and medium-sized companies, a simplified model of HOQ is proposed. A set of reasoning scheme for inferring requirements relationships is adopted to facilitate constructing the HOQ. The contradiction in the process of mechanical design is defined by TRIZ as physical contradiction and technical contradiction. These two contradictions are solved through contradiction matrix and inventive principles of TRIZ. The innovative design system mainly uses the tool of contradiction matrix to solve the bottle techniques attained from QFD. By taking the HOQ as its interface the integration between QFD and TRIZ is realized. After conducting quality function development, two outputs can be obtained. They are the technical measure needing improvement and the technical measure that is getting worse while improving the former one. These two measures are taken as inputs of TRIZ module to analyze and solve the problem of product design.

This study adopted the team teaching method with a professional design teacher and a designer from the industry, to guide the freshmen of the Department of Commercial Design of a Technology University enrolled in the 2009-2010 academic year to perform innovative product design for drinking cups. The teaching and learning discussions of innovative design in the curriculum could help the students to think beyond traditional designs and come up with innovative design ideas for drinking cups for product development. The students design ideas integrated professional design esthetics and visual aesthetic elements and can be used as references for operators in the industry for future design and manufacturing, in order to change Taiwans traditional image in industrial design, create new esthetics of the design culture, and improve quality of life with new humane and social technology.

Numerical control technology is a core of an advanced manufacturing technology, it is the manufacturing industry that realizes the automation, networking, flexibility, integrated foundation. The integral level of the numerical control equipment marks a national industry’s modernized level and power of the overall nation strength. The core of creative product is product conceptual design, creativity is an important characteristics of product conceptual design. The basic principle of TRIZ theories is the foundation of this research. In order to meeting the demand of product design, this research created some applicable tools for product design. As the final research achievement, these applicable tools can be used in the field of numerical control technology.

Proposing the product design method based on innovative materials technology aim to play better the potential of materials’ application and to grasp the future trends of new products development. Combined with the recent typical innovative product cases to demonstrate four innovation design methods: reference, package and adhesion, superposition and integration, variation. These innovation methods’ applications indicate broader prospects of materials’ use that transformed from the state of “material”, the vision and touch of the “quality”, and it also play a positive role in new product development.

For the purpose of presenting a practical approach that is contributed to breakthrough product design, we investigated certain firms and their novel products. The findings reveal that cross-industry knowledge acquisition has played an essential role in providing innovative design solutions, and the connotation of this phenomenon is the application of analogical transfer. Based on the cognitive psychology theories, we further discussed the procedures for an analogy-based design, which includes goal-setting, representation, retrieval and mapping. Finally, a systematic design method is proposed.

The focus of competition in manufacturing industry has shifted from cost to technology. But competitive advantage based on technology can only be maintained by a policy of continuous renewal and innovation. There are never enough new products and their development is never fast enough. To recoup the heavy investment of resources demanded by the increasing pace and complexity of new product developments they must be exploited in the broadest possible marketplace. The paper discusses the sourcing, selection and development of innovative product ideas from the standpoint of an international automotive component supplier.
